Is it OK to have matching chandelier over kitchen island and table?
We will have a 6ft square island in our L shaped kitchen. We already have recessed lighting in the kitchen and breakfast nook. The electrician recommended hanging one chandelier over island (rather than multiple pendants) and I agree mainly because island is square. Our Kitchen table is also square, but at 5ft. I found a chandelier that I love that measures 25" wide x 21.5" high. I wasn't planning on being matchy matchy but I don't care for the coordinating lights in the collection as much. Wondering if the size is appropriate for both areas? Wondering if it will be OK to have the same chandelier for both areas?

6 years agolast modified: 6 years agoIt is more an issue with me that there are two squares, and island is bigger than the table.
How close are they?
25” is too small for the island. Thinking a square for island and your light over the table.
Keep it the same in color/feel/finish…something like this…more pendant in style than chandelier
There isn’t anything written in stone, either, that you have to have a hanging light over the island. If you could have recessed lights there, instead, have them put on a separate switch with dimmer.

Comments (4)I finally accepted that I can't use the pretty flame bulbs from RH in my kitchen. Worse things could happen. My builder finally got my lights installed, and he supplied the bulbs- the maximum wattage allowed. Holy cow! My island could be used as a helicopter landing pad. I'll be swapping out those bulbs and adding a dimmer switch ASAP. Lol. Maggie- I have Medallion cabinets. So far I'm pleased, but I haven't exactly used them yet. Comments (8)I want to share with you what I did in a Boston condo reno…the island was 58” x 58”, granite and the base was two upper kitchen cabinets, which acted like a pedestal and made the piece counter height. Got away without any other supports and the cabs are working cabinets for those pieces used once or twice a year. Kept the top flat and client was able to seat 8 around very comfortably. This was important to client as she has no room for a dining table. 93” is huge for an island, but I would still use the half measurement for the fixture, but not knowing the heft of the piece, that could change my mind. If the chandelier is tiered and open…I bet it would be fine. This is what I used in the industrial loft…much, much better looking in person and a winner with lights on…and it is LED. 32” just a bit bigger than half. Agree w round, to contrast w angle ceiling and all the rectangles at window. As Lucky said, you might "luck " out and find it gives a lot of light. But I think it has to rest a bit high....See More

6 years agoThe center of the table in the breakfast nook is about 17 ft away from center of island.
They are somewhat diagonal from each other.
Our old kitchen had a small hexagonal island with a cooktop that I hated because it wasn't very functional and looked way too small for our kitchen. So I guess I've swung the other way by adding a large island able to accommodate at least 5 bar stools. Plan to have overhangs on 2 sides furthest from the L.

6 years agoAre there 2 sizes of the chandelier? Some times there is a 3 light and 5 light version where you could do one over the table and 2 on the island.. you can definitely do pendants, just make sure they have some size to them so they are in proportion. You definitely can do the same chandelier if you want to as well....

6 years agolast modified: 6 years agoThanks for the responses! After some careful (read lengthy) browsing through photos on Houzz, I realize I need something lighter and more current over the island. With the 6 foot square island would it be better to have 1 hanging light fixture (possibly a quatrefoil), 2 glass or lantern styles spaced evenly, or I'm also thinking 3 hanging at different heights near the center (most likely glass)?

6 years agoI'm going to go with the 3 Kichler Everly seedy glass pendants over island in 3 different heights. Just realized the shape that comes in seedy glass doesn't come in a mini (for over the sink). Thinking of going with the other shape in mercury glass over the sink. What do you think? Should I look for something else that comes in the seedy glass? or get one of the same island lights for over sink?
