Need help filling a spot in my IKEA kitchen

Hubby and I are in the process of building a house and are currently deeply immersed in the kitchen planning phase. We went to IKEA on Saturday and spent ten (yep, TEN) hours in the store purchasing our cabinets. Since their big 10/20% sale has been on for a few weeks they were out of stock on almost everything we had originally planned to buy so we essentially redesigned the kitchen. It turned out ok but there's a spot to the right of our kitchen window where I need some help. The original plan was to have open shelving on either side of the window but now there's absolutely no room on the left and only a 15" space (maybe less once it's trimmed out) on the right. Any thoughts on what I can put there? Would it look weird to have some small open shelves on that side only? I'll upload the 3-D image we got at IKEA for reference. All ideas are welcome! Thanks!

9 years agolast modified: 9 years agoYou don't have to fill every bit of open space in your design, but symmetry can be important to the final look. I would object to the window being framed by less wall space on the left than on the right, but that's just me. Would you consider using a smaller cabinet to the left of the window, or adding a stack of stack of open cubbies to the right of it? It would look like the wine cubbies below. Note that in this image, the windows are also not symmetrically framed, in fact, nothing is symmetrical! But the space is unified with bs tile and is framed on all sides.
Do you have measurements?

Comments (29)Thank you all. Just to answer a few questions. No I didn't get an email from anyone in Australia. Ask her to send it again if she can. No he won't be up and around in a few days. His brothers pushed a full size mattress over on him and snapped his right femur. He had surgery on Sunday afternoon. They inserted flexible rods. He has a knee imobilizer brace that goes from his ankle to his groin. He will have to wear that for at least 3 weeks. He can't have any pressure of any kind on the foot. He is in a wheel chair to help him move around. He has a walker for when he gets a little more mobile. The doctor said he would have to stay pretty much immobile for about 2 months. She also said it would take at least 2 months to heal where he could walk on it again. He will have to have another surgery in about 6 months to remove the rods if the leg has healed correctly. And he may have to have another surgery in a few years if his leg grows longer than the other. They will have to correct that. He is 4 and at a very difficult age to have this type of injury. To old for a spika cast but barely old enough for the rods. He still has some growth spurts coming and this can cause the broken leg to grow longer because it was set with rods. When they set it and cast it they actually set it shorter to accomidate the growth spurts. But because they didn't cast it they didn't do that. So we will have to wait and see. Comments (6)My guess is that you don't want to move windows, doors, plumbing etc. I would orient the island so that you have a long island facing the sink and the window. That way, the view from the island is through the window, which will be pleasing. Another option is to put a square shaped island, then you can sit on two sides of the island. L shaped island does not look good, (IMHO) and it will not function well because you will be squeezed in the L. I would move the sink to the left of the window as you look at it so the distance from the sink to frig is reduced. Is your window drawn properly? That is a rather low from the ceiling window. Did there used to be soffits that you are taking out? If you are taking out the soffits and not raising/enlarging the windows, I think it will look odd. You may have to spend some money and raise the window appropriately.... I have a similar L with a center island. Frig/range then to sink. It actually works quite well for me. I don't need/want the water source on the island. The skinny uppers next the hood does not cut it. It needs to be balanced with long horizontal shelves perhaps... I have my speed oven mounted under the counter on the island. It works fine for me. This is not so popular here, however. Kitchen design is a balance of esthetics and function. What functions you accept may not suit another user. Pay attention to what functions/esthetics are important to you not what others think are important to you. 10 years ago, the rage was the two level island. I loved my 1 level island then and I would not budge from the position. Now, one level is more popular I also LOVE my island without a sink on it. Again, not a popular choice. But this works better for me..... Another option for your kitchen, since it is so big is to fill the left side wall (where the frig is) with solid wall of cabinets/frig/pantry/wall oven. Then you have the island and 17 ft counter space to work with. This is a popular European plan. Comments (7)Hi Katrina, To your first question regarding moving wall cabs up and down: Select the cabinet to be raised or lowered. Go into 3D view. Get a close up view of the cab. To the right (maybe sometimes to the left, I'm not quite sure) of the cab you'll see an up/down arrow. click up or down to move the cab until it's at the desired height. Planner tips: If your software is lagging, it helps to give it some time after every click before continuing. When you select a cab, wait before continuing until the cursor stops spinning. All that will prevent it from getting overwhelmed. Make sure that all extensions in your browser are disabled. That seems to help. Keep saving often. I mean it: really often. Ikea updated the software about 2 weeks ago. Since then the planner works much better on my Mac Ibook using Firefox. I haven't tried to run the planner with Chrome or Safari since the update. Comments (17)Alrighty, here's design #3. You're not wrong about the budget, Carolina Kitchen ;) The running total is at $4,160 right now, but including a pantry cabinet would push it higher. We're cutting quite a bit of costs by doing a builder grade maple butcher block countertop and cheap $2-3 / sq ft ceramic tile for the walls and floor. It's still tight though. For that reason alone I'll probably have to ditch the pantry. I agree that it looks like valuable storage in your kitchen though, Janie! Wine cabinet is gone, I agree. The trash pull out in that pic is spot on - that's the exact model I was looking at (Rev-a-Shelf, correct?) and I was thinking we could add it later if we don't have the cash now. We compost and recycle most of our waste, and barely fill our trash once a week currently. I do think the drawers would have to just be junk drawers and office supplies. I replaced the two drawers with one large one, maybe that will be more useful? It could hold trash bags, big packs of batteries, etc. That's too funny that the farmhouse sink might be pretentious. I will graciously accept that opinion and probably do it anyway. I just like how they work! I love sinks that are full counter depth and don't leave a strip of counter in the back or front to get soaked with water. It also makes the most sense for us with butcher block countertops to have the sink that is least likely to get the counter wet. In this new design, it's moved 8.25" away from the corner which is as far as we can get with the current plumbing. Not sure what to do with those 8.25" though. The bottom of the range hood is 32" above the cooktop. Is that too high? My husband is 6' 2" and always complains about ours now which is 29" above....See More
