Weeping cherry shrivelled brown leaves

Hi all,

I'm having trouble with my weeping cherry tree. The leaves are brown on the edges, and are shrivelled up. Some of them also have small holes in them. I recently planted them in the garden from the pot in which they were growing in whilst at the store, and I noticed that prior to planting them they had the same symptoms as they do now. I'm a novice gardener so any advice or help would be greatly appreciated.

It's very hard to be sure from photos, but this sort of browning around leaf margins is frequently caused by inconsistent watering - too wet followed by too dry, etc. The holes are likely caused by shot hole disease or a similar fungus. Cherries are very prone to this infection. The good news is that it is not fatal to the plant and can be controlled by a number of different fungicides.

III ... you bought it that way ... i am not sure i would have.. but if i did.. i would presume it has been treated by the wholesaler prior to shipment ... and i would presume there is no disease process to treat.. besides the fact.. that but for proper water.. i do NOT spray any kinda of goo's on an already stressed plant .. and a recent transplant is stressed.. by definition ...

to repeat.. you bought it that way .. why are you now presuming.. you are having trouble ... the ONLY important thing.. is proper planting.. and proper watering ... for the next year .... AND!!! .. keeping an eye on it.. but dont worry ... its not really what the garden is for ..

one way to reduce worry.. is to keep the receipt handy.. in case of failure ...

ps: if you want to discuss how you planted it.. as compared to the link .. that is what we are here for ... but noticing the big purple flower... we need to know how you did it.. and where you are .. and the source of the plant ...

it probably is NOT the time to dig it back up and plant it properly ....

Scott, The problem with leaf area density is that it just measures leaves. The focus of the LAI fruit tree studies is on harvestable light. They ignore tree canopy volume (leaves and wood). I shouldn't have said tall trees produce more leaves/area in my last post. I started out discussing canopy volume and then momentarily equated canopy volume to leaves/area, which was a mistake. They are two different things. Obviously as a tree is larger there are less leaves in the interior, as more structural wood takes it's place. Leaf area density may well decrease, but the canopy volume per area will increase. That's the part that is relevant to spraying, since the whole canopy must be sprayed (leaves and wood). Think of it this way. A given house has a certain footprint. An average new house probably covers something like 1000 sq.ft. of land area (living area inside the house is generally much bigger because of multiple floors.) Assume the house needs a roof. If it was a perfectly flat roof, it would require 1000 sq.ft. of shingles (or 10 square) assuming no eaves. However, if that same house had a gable roof, it would take more than 10 squares to roof it. In fact, as the pitch of the roof increased it would take more and more squares because the area of the roof would increase. With a 12-12 pitch it would take almost 50% more shingles than a flat roof. A roof with the slope of a Christmas tree would have an area more than 50% of a flat roof. Fruit tree canopies don't grow quite like Christmas trees (although large sweet cherries can resemble that shape) but all fruit trees have vertical canopy (Generally speaking taller trees have a steeper pitch.) The larger the vertical canopy, the greater the canopy volume per area and the more spray required per area. Hman, I've also read how Captan redistributes to new foliage well. I've never understood how on the one hand it is known for having both good adhesion and good redistribution at the same time.

Dieback on ornamental cherries in the PNW is very common - one of the many fungal or bacterial problems these trees are prone to here (so many in fact, that WSU published an entire pamphlet on ornamental cherry tree problems). It has nothing to do with fertilizer or lack of it - much more a factor of our weather and the inherent vulnerability of these types of trees. As to fertilizing or not.......never is a very long time and it may very well be that trees and/or shrubs in the landscape will require some sort of nutrient supplementation from time to time. They do pull nutrients from the soil and while they may have a long reach, it is not inconceivable for them to require fertilizer on occasion. But it should not be considered an annual chore but done only as needed. The appearance of the plants and/or a soil test will determine what, if anything is lacking and should be supplemented. And when the time does come to fertilize, throw away the MiracleGro and use a granulated fertilizer (synthetic or organic - your choice) sprinkled around the entire root zone. Foliar fertilizer applications are extremely inefficient and generally a waste of time and fertilizer. Nutrients are absorbed primarily by plant roots and the benefit of foliar applications is minimal. Without photos it's difficult to say exactly what your cherry is suffering from, but brown rot has been very common this season with our cool and wet late spring. FWIW, fertilizing with a high nitrogen fertilizer (like MiracleGro) is not advised as increases the incidence and potency of the fungal problem. "Use only moderate amounts of nitrogen fertilizer such as one application per year of a 5-10-10 or none if the tree is growing normally." (WSU Extension Bulletin)

I live in Eastern Nebraska. I planted a Flowering Cherry tree this spring. It was beautiful & developed many blossoms early on. Prior to planting it we had a drainage problem from our neighborÂs yard (sump pump/ gutter down spout run off & pooling into a large portion of our yard) & have since remedied it with a French Drain. This seems to have worked very well as our new sod has grown in beautifully & the soil underneath has hardened up to what feels more "normal". However, the cherry tree is planted right near this French Drain & the leaves on it have now curled up & turned brown. The branches are still moist, but there has been no new growth on it for at least a week. I think it must be getting enough water as it rains here nearly every day. I water in the morning when the weather will be hot, or grass seems very dry about 2 - 3 times weekly if needed. I really hope this tree is not dead or dying. If it is in the process of dying I am wondering if there is anything I can do to reverse that/ boost itÂs health. Any help would be very much appreciated! Thank you

I'd like to see a little additional gentle movement in the small branch you wired. The reason is, movement usually gets more pronounced toward the tree's apex. Since the first notable movement is only a couple of inches above the soil, you should have movement, even if not pronounced, in the smaller branch within that approximate distance. Lacking movement, that small branch will draw your eye because of its straightness, unless the tree is grown from this point in time forward as a formal upright or a slant style with a straight trunk. Looking ahead, one could envision the entire trunk above that wired branch moving left as sacrificial. The first small branch off the left-moving wired branch could act as the temporary leader and the branch growing opposite of it could be the first branch on your tree. If you decide to do that, you would prune that branch back to 2 leaves. That done, all of the left-moving wired branch beyond that little opposite pair of branches we're discussing as the temporary leader and first branch would also be sacrificial. Green = wire some movement into this branch Yellow = sacrificial Red = your new temporary leader - wire it more upright - it will grow faster Blue = the first branch on your tree. This is the one to cut back to 2 leaves to slow it down - so the new temporary leader (opposite it) becomes dominant. Al

Hi guys,

Thanks so much for everyone's reply. I'm sadly getting a picture that I have incorrectly planted and watered my plant :(.

Here are some additional details that might help Ken Adrian get the full picture of what's happened;

1. The plant was planted three weeks ago, which is the second month of fall/Autumn in Australia.

2. My location is inner Melbourne, Australia.

3. I placed the hole about 30 cm wide and 40 cm deep.

4. I have been watering it lightly on the leaves every 1 to 2 days.

5. There are two follows very close to the plants, one is a bougainvillea (left), and one is Jasmine (behind).

6. I basically dug the hole, and placed the plant in the hole without checking the roots :(

7. The soil is heavy clay

Note: I have also noticed some green buds on the branches right at the base of the leaves. Does anyone know what this is and wether it's normal or something else?

When you plant a tree you need to water the soil around the roots thoroughly, not the leaves. Did you do that?

And it is way too close to the Bouganvillea and the fence.

Since it is now nearly winter for you it would be a good time, after you've done some reading, to move it to a better position and plant it properly. You might be lucky.

and it being fall ..

and presuming its deciduous ...

then i am never really concerned about how the leave look .. this time of year ... they are going to fall off.. and be gone ...

in case anything was going on.. clean them all up.. so they wont be there in spring .. just in case ...

i would have bought a fall plant with those leaves... ESPECIALLY if it was a fall bargain plant ...

if you read that link ... you should know.. fall is one of the prime planting times ... especially on a deciduous tree ... since the various shocks.. will not really hurt leaves that are already primed to fall off ... all the better if they do..

fall is root growing time... and it will have all fall.. winter.. and early spring.. to get those roots settled in.. for the next time the leaves emerge ....

NEVER water the leaves of anything.. that is ONLY ma natures job.. otherwise ... you water the roots ... leaves transpire or sweat .. lose water .. though they may take in some minimal water... its not really their job ...

and if you water in the evening.. and the leaves go into humid darkness damp .. you could get in trouble with various night pathogens.. the most famous of which is powdery mildews ...

since you suspect improper planting... as compared to the link ... and basically just yanked it from the pot ... at a min .. now that it has no leaves.. yank it back out... fluff out at least about half the MEDIA ... cut any severe circling roots ... and replant it in native soil.. per the link ... water it in properly .. and mulch it ... and then.. inserting finger about 2 or 3 inches ... dont water again. until the soil seems to be drying ... which.. in fall. might be weeks or a month from know ... no one can really tell you how it will all work.. in your soil ...

and you are responsible for all water next year ... especially in the high heat of summer.. and any droughts ...

the year after ... it should be rather self sufficient ...

Hi Ken and others,

I really appreciate the time everyone has taken to give me their expert advice.

I've got a fairly good idea about what I need to do (dig up, check roots, find new place to plant, plant the tree, mulch and water properly via the roots).

In regards to the new hole for the plant, I was just wondering should I;

1. Dig down into the clay and place a layer of gypsum.

2. Dig down a bit deeper in the clay and backfill with native soil.

3. Do a combonation of both?

My other question at this point is, does anyone know what the buds at the base of the leaves are? Are they normal or something I should worry about?

When you replant, dig the planting hole at least twice as wide as the root ball and slightly less deep. Rough up the sides of the hole. Site the tree in the hole so that the root flare (where the trunk widens into the root system) is at ground level or slightly higher. Backfill with only the soil your removed from the hole and water in well.

I wouldn't worry about any strange buds or shoots you may have seen now. Wait until the tree leafs out again in spring to assess any unusual issues that might exist. But for now, just get the tree replanted properly.
