How to avoid cross-pollination of squash, melons, etc.?
Comments (6)Mag, Armenian cuke is actually a type of melon (Cucumis melo var flexuosus), not a true cucumber (Cucumis sativus). The current crops' flavors wouldn't be affected by cross pollination. I avoid cross pollination by using tightly fitting floating row covers. For a day or two one variety is exposed to bee activity while nearby relatives are covered with the fabric. After that another variety is exposed and the other potential parents are covered by fabric. In the cool spring around here I do hand pollinate to get some early fruiting: bundle some male stamens together and swish them inside the corollas against the female styles. Watch out for resting bumble bees early in the morning!...See MoreIdentifying monster squash
Comments (18)A definite possibility. Long of Naples is a butternut type ( C. moschata) in the 35 lb class. Not usually considered a monster squash. But it matches the photos better than anything I have seen. If it has hard solid vines as opposed to the hollow vines of C. pepo and C. maxima, that may be it or a cross. Some of the banana types will get big but the coloring is wrong. They are C. maximas so could be crossed with a bigger C. maxima. Another test, Hungarian Mammoth is touted as one of the few naked seed squash. I have no idea whether it is the same squash as Hungarian Giant, but I don't see that claim for Hungarian Giant....See MoreFreakish monster plants
Comments (6)Enjoy your pumpkins newbiehavinfun! Probably most gardeners have a similar story of plants gone wild! Because I love home grown tomatoes so much I don't seem to learn by experience and have repeated my 'too many tomato plants' mistakes several times! When we bought our first house and I had my first 'real' veggie garden I bought 2 flats of a dozen each indeterminate tomato plants never realizing how much space they'd take, that they needed staking, or how much they'd produce. I learned one can freeze tomatoes whole and deal with them later. I did it again in another garden so, once again, had tomatoes to spare. There were so many that some of the cherry tomatoes fell to the ground and seeded. The next year I had seedling tomato plants coming up throughout the garden and a huge crop of Colorado potato beetles that found them. I picked zillions of beetles hoping to save a few of the strongest plants but finally gave up and threw all the plants and beetles in the garbage. Fast forward to this property where we can have frost at any time of the year so I planted a dozen cherry and determinate tomato plants in large pots on the deck. The frost didn't get them but the squirrel did. Just when they were getting ripe he picked every tomato and left the skins and seeds on the deck railing for me to clean up! If I tried to chase him off he chattered angrily at me! I've given up on growing tomatoes, easier to buy them at the farmers' market! I've never bothered growing zucchini as there are always people who want to give it away!...See Moregas range, monster grates
Comments (2)No replies because your statements are all over the place. Do you already have a gas range and are just upgrading or are you converting from electric. If you are converting, you should address your venting to see if it is adequate. IMO, you should then throw out your budget of $1000. IMO, you should throw it out anyways. Your chicken nugget comment shows your looking at items in the Frigidaire price range and this clearly contradicts your "enthusiast" statement. Learn to cook with a wok. There is not enough room to discuss how on this forum. When you do, you will realize you need significantly more BTU's than $1000 will give you. You will also discover that the 5th burner is not as common as big box store shopping implies. Go to an locally owned store instead, toss out all the specs you read on the internet and inquire with a salesman that will help you narrow down what is important to you....See Morefloral_uk z.8/9 SW UK
