I was happy when talking to my neighbor about my Bluebird boxes and she said I could put my extra one up in her yard. I was thrilled three days later when she had a pair of Bluebirds interested in her box. It made me feel really good when they accepted the box and started packing it with nesting material. I was less thrilled and happy when it dawned one that it was MY resident pair that were apparently moving across the street to her yard!

Oh well, I least I can see them from my lanai as they work and they visit my yard for baths each evening. :)

Hi

In all the years have never seen a Bluebird in my area . Many lizards some wasps even a blacksnake but nary a bird lol I do get winter Painted Buntings

which are delight to watch but no nesting

I do have a pair of woodpeckers that are making their own house . The hole is fianally deep enough for them to enter. I'm assuming it;s the male doing all the work he works from S/S everyday for several weeks now The other frequently visits and inspects but no work lol i had left the dead limb on the tree to grow epis. but a far more interesting use for it ?? gary

Michael, that is funny! I have a few type of birds in my yard, some on the oak trees, others on the Queen Wreath and around this time the cardinals are looking for spots, I saw one yesterday. Because I live on the trail with a lot of trees around the house, there are a lot of birds.

Amending of planting hole backfill is not beneficial unless you amend the entire bed so that the entire potential rooting area of the plant is modified - as can easily be done with small plants like perennials. Many kinds of these are also apt to be dug up and divided at some point, at which time the bed can be re-amended. Shrubs, on the other hand, are nearly always going to have to live for decades with the original planting method being the only thing affecting the site conditions - other than maintenance operations including mulching. Organic amendments incorporated at time of planting will decompose and disappear long before the shrub is no longer being grown on the site. In one instance peat dug into a soil in Oklahoma was seen to have vanished after one year. Amending of planting hole backfill has actually been found to be detrimental in many instances, due to how movement of water into and out of the amended planting hole is affected. If a significantly different texture from the soil outside the planting hole is created within the hole by amending - much of the point of amending - then the backfill with have a different attraction for water than the soil around the hole. On heavy soils during wet conditions the amended planting hole make even act as a sump, subjecting the new plant to drowning and rotting of its roots. During dry conditions the less coarse, unamended soil around the hole may have a greater attraction for water, resulting in chronic drought stress to the new plant - unless and until it roots into the unamended soil outside the hole. Undisturbed potting soil rootballs are subject to the same factors, even when planted in unamended backfill. This has resulted in recent recommendations to bare-root at planting time. Exposing the roots also makes inspecting them for deformities possible, kinking, j-rooting and circling are very common among plants produced in containers.

JI's are supposed to bloom here in July. Last year I planted my first Japanese irises, 7 of them. Only one of them bloomed in July, Pinkerton. I sure was surprised when Sing the Blues bloomed on 09/11. Shadow Here is Pinkerton that bloomed in July.

Yuppers, I have to get after it. It may take me all summer to kill it out. I walked it a couple of days ago and that crapp is all over the hill, except one strip near the crest. Man! It bet it will cost a bundle to spray all that! Needs to be done on a nice hot sunny day. Because of the high amount of oils in Heath Aster, it creates a high fire danger, winter or summer, but especially in summer. You can throw a green branch of it on a burn pile and it explodes into flames that shoot up into the air! Right now, Oklahoma is in a serious drought with statewide fire bans. Lakes drying up. Stock ponds completely dry and winter wheat seeds just laying on top on dry, cracked ground. What few areas have gotten a bit of moisture from two small snowstorms, you can see winter wheat growing, but the plants are stunted and sparsely growing up out of the hard dry ground. Farmers are having to haul in water for their livestock. Wheat prices will surely go up and we will seE it in the supermarkets. May no be any prairie hay to mow this year nor wheat straw either, so prices on that will shoot up, too. Many just took their cattle to market and sold them. Conditions are bad right now here in Okie. The wildfires have burned hundreds of thousands of acres since November. There is one burning just southeast of me right now. I have my own water well that is not fed by groundwater. Ihave been able to water and keep my gardens going around the house, but not up on the meadow. Up there, with all the cedars (juniper trees) and heath asters, plus all the tall, dry prairie grasses, it is a tender box. A lot of dead wood from trees dying from the drought. I started mowing up there this fall in early November and my tractor got two flat tires so I couldn't finish it - No mun, no fun. The flats are actually punctures made by the Heath Asters. The H. aster's stem staubs are like sharp, armoured metal spikes, and when I was mowing they punctured the tractor tires! Just imagine what they could do to your feet? (Grrrrr! Eeee-vil plant!!) Great for rent ad!

I didn't know Bluebirds came that far south. The only birds of blue here are Scrub Jays & Blue Jays. Though we haven't seen the Scrub Jays in awhile. There was a family of Scrub Jays across the street that would take peanuts from your hand.

Lots of other birds, even had two Hummingbirds this year.

I get flocks of Bluebirds every winter. They love to use the birdbaths on the ground for... bathing, but will leave the elevated ones alone, even if only elevated a foot. And they take full advantage of the disturbed insects every time I mow. But around March most will head back to their northern stomping grounds. There are some, though, that will stay around here.

'My' resident pair spent the entire winter running off other Bluebirds from their nest box and keeping it safe. They even started working on padding it up with fresh nesting materials. Then I put up the one across the street and they just up and moved. It gets a fair bit more sun than mine and is surrounded by more open area, so that might play into why they moved. I'm just hoping another pair finds the now vacant nest box and the distance between the two, at least 100 yds, is enough that the old pair don't feel a need to defend both boxes.

Michael, I hope you get another pair of bluebirds. I loved mine and they had several broods. Then last year, the female took to defending her territory against her reflection in my bedroom window. The pecking (a loud tapping noise) against the glass would go on for hours and hours... and start at dawn - even on the weekends (no respect at all!). Making scary faces from the inside didn't help. My next door neighbor had the same problem and hung newspaper on the outside of her bedroom window. Didn't help her for long, either. I finally took the bluebird house down. I win.

(Just kidding, of course. I'd love to have them back, sans window tapping!)

EDIT: By the way, a quick search on the internet showed that this is common among bluebirds. They will spend hours attacking their own reflection in a window.. lots of YouTube videos.
