Rio Red Grapefruit tree questions

I have a rio red grapefruit tree about 12ft tall this year. It has 3 trunks in a triangle that come from a single large trunk near the ground maybe 8" high. and this year 2 of the trunks have large lush leaves and for the first time they have blooms. One trunk has big leaves on the branches at the bottom and kind of barren branches with plenty of thorns but small leaves that look to be trying to catch up as they go higher. First, I am in zipcode 77657 which looks to be just over the line into 8b. Should I expect to ever get edible fruit? Sometimes our winters are mild and sometimes they can get cold. Where fruit would be nice, it is near my patio and the tree smells great so I still love it fruit or not. What is going on with my sad trunk? Should I wait to see what happens or cut the trunk down now? The tree would look very lopsided if I do that. Since the problem gets worse as it goes higher, should I trim the whole tree down to the big leaves? Any advice would be great.
