Sacramento Historic Rose Garden, April 18 Open Garden
Comments (4)Hey Anita: Thanks for posting that. I had it marked on my calendar already:) Last year my MIL and husband went down for me and had great fun. That was when I got Lupe's Buttons which was such a find. I'm really excited for this event. Now about that catalog can a person got one in advance? Or just on the 18th? Thanks again for all that is done to make the Open Garden sale happen. Kate...See MoreOld Town Novato at Sacramento Cemetery Open Garden
Comments (10)We had to miss Open Garden last year, so doing the catalog is really making me "itchy" for the day, and the roses, and the rose people. And, if you've not seen it, here is "Old Town Novato," grown here at the Coast. Jeri...See MoreWho's coming to Cambria and Hearst Castle in April?
Comments (14)Hi Jeri, Can you believe I am NOT a member of the SBRS? I have been obsessed with roses for 15 years, have had a rose test garden for about that long, but never joined the fun groups. The last three years have been devoted to our landscape construction project, and I haven't had the time or energy to join any groups. It sounds crazy, taking three+ years on landscaping. We live on a hill and basically cut and filled to make our front and back yard flat. Lots of permiting headaches, cranes, backhoes, bobcats, etc. We are almost finished though. The fun part is coming up. The rose garden gets planted at the end of April. I would love to come down to the Ventura meeting. I hadn't heard of the Gold Coast Heritage Rose Group until today. I never even looked at the OGR's forum. I always check the Rose forum. I really only like old rose shapes (Austins, Romanticas, Generosas, Renaissance) but never thought OGR people would post about them. Until I clicked on the antique forum a couple day ago by mistake. Think of all the years I could have been learning from you all. I have grown Jacques Cartier, and Rose de Resch (SP?) but nothing else "old". I am not even sure those are considered old. Wow, long post. Sorry. Hope to meet you and learn from you. Eileen...See MoreSacramento City Cemetery Sale Catalog
Comments (22)Each Open Garden is different, with a varying mix of friends, weather and blooms. We're moderately early in the bloom this year, so some of the banksiae and most teas should still be blooming, and the later flowers will be starting. Weather forecast is good - mid-seventies, partly cloudy, little chance of rain as of today, with no storms this week to knock things off supports or damage blooms. We've made some changes, probably most are subtle - new supports, new sign, roses planted along the front fence, other roses added or deleted, a lot of progress controlling weeds. We're even fixing some of the tumbled-down brickwork. The roses are in better shape than ever, I think, although some have problems. Last year was the last time Da Kernel was at our garden. We will miss him terribly. This year, other stalwart friends won't make it, but others will be here for the first time. We have some new, enthusiastic volunteers who have infused our garden with fresh energy. Gardeners get to enjoy the cycle of life in the garden, as the roses wake up in spring, grow to maturity or decline, and set hips and sleep in the winter - but we see the same cycle in the people who come to be part of it. We'll treasure everyone who comes, miss those who can't, and look forward to folks like Ann and Jeff and Sue and others coming another year. Anita...See More- 9 years ago
