What plant do you miss growing?

For me, it is veronica. "Lavender Charm" was my favorite. I don't have that much sunny real estate in my beds and it's all pretty much accounted for, no room for a nice stand of veronica. IME these just did not flower well in part sun. I really enjoyed them and if I ever get that acreage I want I'll grow them again (if there's some sun on that acreage, anyway).

Also, daisies. Oh, they do ok in part sun but there is just something about the soil at this house that daisies just do not like - and I've lost count of the times I've tried. I've taken to just buying a pot in bloom at the nursery mid summer and sticking that inside a decorative pot and plopping it out in the garden or on the patio somewhere in full view. Problem solved. :ob

Oh, and vegetables. Like I said, not a lot of sun. I do have a small area for vegetables, but I primarily grow tomatoes (there are not many things as satisfying as standing amidst the plants and eating perfectly ripe tomatoes right off the vine warmed by the summer sun...). A few other veggies, too, but not room for much. The herbs do well though. I had a nice vegetable garden at my other house, and I do miss that.

..I hear you about tomatoes...

..I miss Diascia rigescens... it over wintered in my last garden, and I want to try it again here, but I fear it won't survive so well.... I used to grow it amongst my roses...

..I must look up that Veronica and see what I think of it... not one I know...

I grew up in GA and I'm now in VA. While I always say I wouldn't move back - I do love the "seasons" (though my heat was on for 6 months this year-ugghh) - I do miss the longer growing season and some of the more tropical plants. We had a jasmine vine on a trellis outside our front bedroom windows. OMG it smelled so good!!! I moved away after college and at some time my parents took it down. Very sad.

I miss bachelor buttons and sweet peas - I never get the soil prepared in fall for early peas, and I never seem to have room for bachelor buttons - although I really love them. Also, I ripped out some plume poppy that I'd planted in the wrong spot, and have been unable to find a better, safer location for it. I miss the color of the leaves, and the way raindrops stood on them - but I don't miss the fear of them taking over my yard. The same goes for the mat-forming veronica, the one with the dainty blue flowers. I actually had to move to get rid of that one, and when I drive by my old garden sometimes, when it's in bloom, I'm really tempted... but I resist.

That is a wonderful amaryllis. I have never had one of those. Thought they were always so pretty. any sort of cacti and I do not get along. My mother had a few when we were growing up. I got into a big one out doors on time on was having tiny thorns dug out for weeks. Nope I will just look at those from wayyyyy across the room. lol. I keep year around an dracaena. That my son had given me for mothers day a few years ago. they had three large plants in one gallon tub. This year I took the tops off and started new plants and now have eight plants. I really like they way they look year around. I Have a philo that i take in an out with the seasons. I brought in a geranium an a mandevilla. I also brought in about 8-10 begonia plants. I think I am down to 6-7. I had trouble with them holding too much moisture. I finally changed out the soil and they did fine after that and started blooming. Africian violet used to be a favorite of mine. I have not grown one of those for years. I may need to try tat one again. Would do well in my kitchen window. christie when mine get to looking too bad I move them to a room where no one but me can see them. I get embarrassed if they start looking too bad. Alas, I must confess, I'm a beyond-redemption plantaholic. There's no one group or family of plants I exclusively focus on. What I mostly have are Aroids and Palms, over 60 species of each. Other groups I have are Cycads about 11 species. Dracaena, about 6 species with a number of different varieties of the same species. Orchids, about 15 species, terrestrial and epiphytic. Pandanus, about 5 plus some varieties. Carnivorous plants, about 10. Cyclanthaceae, 3. Frangipani, probably 2 species but a number of different colours. Hibiscus, about 5 although some of those are probably varieties of the same species. Ginger Family, about 10. I have lots of trees, including about 6 species of Ficus and several different fruit species. And plenty of other odds and ends, including Mussaenda, Mandevilla, Bromeliads, Bamboos, Ferns, Crotons, Heliconias, a few Waterlilies (Nymphaea and nymphoides), Lotus (Nelumbo), Hanguana, Thalia, etc., etc. And I'm still always on the look out for more interesting plants. I've long given up on any hope of rehabilitation and just run with my addiction.

Miss the Siberian Iris. They were doing fine, but all are gone. Cannot say why, and will try again. They seem the easiest of plants, and were doing beautifully. They did not seem to just peter away.

Re perennials, there's lots of fish in the sea and it seems to make economic sense to determine which perennials do well in your growing conditions and rely especially on them.

So perhaps if perennials don't do well they shouldn't be missed.

On the other hand, there's also the situation when pests appear and it no longer becomes practical to keep proven winners.

I previously found toadlilies useful perennials, especially because of their fall bloom time. Now they don't seem worth an ongoing fight with lily beetles.

I also do like some purple coneflowers for their colour and their dependability in mixed perennial beds. Still I've very largely stopped using them. This time it doesn't seem worth an ongoing fight with coneflower rosette mites. The 'Hot Papaya' below (July 6, 2012) are beginning to show mite damage. Subsequently they were removed.

You know, we have your same problem/blessing - too much shade (great for the AC bill in the summer) but terrible for planting what I want. I have a small veggie garden and it's not doing so well, even though I use compost soil and water it. It just doesn't get good sun - maybe 4-5 hours instead of the good 6-8 hours. Even cutting down a big pine right next to it didn't help as much as I thought it would last year.

Ironically, my best sun is right in the front, near the road. I have this big square crazy patch of flowers that live where a huge evergreen was taken out. But even there it is mostly 3 things people have given me that have taken over the $100"s of dollars worth of plants I've bought over the years. So it's just a wild mess mostly.

I don't really have a nice lawn, though I do put my bunnies/guinea pigs out in cages to eat on nice days so I kind of want to keep whatever grass pops up. Otherwise, I've thought of turning my whole front yard into a big cottage garden with flowers and vegetables and paths. No problems with our HOA so maybe one day....... (famous last words, right?)

alliums - specifically bulbing onions and garlic. White rot is now endemic on the allotment (sigh) so it is impossible to grow a fat stand of onions. I miss them, not only for the pleasure of eating them but because of the little rituals involved. I always sowed my onions on boxing day (I love these little garden traditions) as a counter-move against the annual Xmas orgy of shopping. It was almost a life-line -that quiet hour sorting through the seed packets (the garlic would have been planted on my birthday in October), riffling the potting mix to a nice friable fluff, then placing those shiny black seeds in rows in 4inch pots. True, leeks and scallions will still grow but they are not the same as fat golden globes (every meal seems to start with an onion).

Monarda: so prone to getting mildew here that they are just not worth the effort.
Phlox: had it some years ago but became disfigured by phlox eel worm and also a victim of mildew.
