First Rhubarb of the Season

My rhubarb is weeks ahead. It usually isn't ready to pick until towards the end of April or first week of May.

I see a pie in the near future but we settled for Rhubarb Crisp last night.

Morz, I love rhubarb just stewed. So, while it has a bit of sugar, you don't eat that much and nothing else to add calories. Although you could serve it warm with some milk or a few tbs. of half and half or even some unsweetened whipped cream wouldn't make it crazy high calorie.

I was at Elery's all weekend, so Cooper had a burger from McDonald's on Friday night after the three hour drive, I had some hummus and raw veggies. Saturday we got up and had fresh eggs (I took a dozen with me, I'm NOT eating those store bought things!) on toasted English Muffins, then went into Ann Arbor. I bought another mini-muffin tin at Homegoods to make the quiches go a little faster and a set of wooden "salad hands", hand painted in the Philipines, just because they were different than anything I'd ever seen. We went to Whole Foods and bought some artichoke/fennel/edamame salad and a couple of sweet potato latkes from the deli and a "made in Michigan" granola bar, then went to Trader Joe's, where we stocked up on Dubliner cheese, some peanut butter filled pretzels for the kids, the flax seed chips that I like. Supper was with his son and DIL and sometime in there we had pinto beans and cornbread. Sunday morning we had a late brunch, salmon patties, some of the salad from Whole Foods and the rest of the hummus. I started home and stopped at Horrocks where I bought two cases of cheap wine for Amanda's wedding reception in October, where I'll store it I don't know. Also avocados at 32 cents each, some fresh beets, mangoes at 2 for $1, celery, carrots, sweet potatoes, a head of romaine, a daikon radish, cauliflower and broccoli. Two hours later I stopped at McDonald's in Newaygo and got Cooper an ice cream cone and myself a Diet Coke, and when I got home I made a big salad. (Sigh) Very healthy, I wish I liked salad a little better. Cooper ate the last of the chicken in the fridge. Last night I left work and went home and made some chicken livers with bacon, steamed some broccoli and ate the rest of the salad. And now I'm caught up, but no pictures of anything... Annie

Thanks Mom. I gave half it away to our neighbour so Moe and I wouldn't be tempted to eat it all. Jasdip, I just did an update on WFD. Didn't realize it had been that long since I posted. Yup the leaves are toxic. I have read, that you would have to consume about 5 lbs to be deadly toxic, a few bits cooked or raw would give massive stomach discomfort. Someone recently on the garden forum needed a plant id, being in a new home, and thought the rhubarb coming up in the yard was swiss chard, yikes. Like Annie, i slice or snap off the leaves right by the plant and tuck them under and around for a mulch. (not that anything really grows near or under it), but rather not put them in my compost. Just stumbled across a recipe for rhubarb bread. It softens and cooks down quickly and loses all shape if sliced. Not at all like celery, zucchini, etc that hold their shape. Also seeing recipes pairing it with ginger.

Just transplanted Rhubarb , will it grow this season ?

I transplanted it only last week, I wasn't aware of the timing thing ! Anyhow, I deluged it with water when I did it, about 3 gallons. It's been raining here in Western MAss for quite a while now, including today. The plant seems to have perked right up ! FYI....looks like your from the UK ? Well ....I got the transplanted rhubarb from a transplanted Brit ! Small World ain't it !

yum...Mine isn't even showing yet. I guess I shouldn't complain. Some years there's still a pile of snow on it in early April.

A friend of mine just dropped some off this evening, said first cutting of the season. I'm not sure what I'll do with it yet, whether use it fresh or put it in my freezer for later. DH has been cutting back and trying to lose a few pounds, I hate to tempt him with a dessert ;( And he loves rhubarb.

Cook it down without much sugar at all and add it to a mustard sauce or your bbq sauce...rhubarb is not always about sweet. It is the glorious first signs of spring...use it in a veggie dish. I can't wait for those knots to leaf. The last few years i have been using it in everything and keep experimenting...

I just planted three more crowns today, and Molly went right behind me and dug them up, and I planted them again. My established plants are just starting to peek up above ground, so it'll be a few weeks for mine too.

That's a good idea coconut, there wouldn't be a buttery crust to add calories. A busy day today so its in the refrigerator still, maybe I will stew it tomorrow. And I could freeze some after stewing too, there seems to be quite a bit.

Sure morz. Later could have the stewed as is or easily add it to pie or crisp with fresh.

( had to edit earlier post. Had thought was Annie instead of Ann T. Now Annie might say I should have known by the plating..heh)

Unfortunately, I never got rhubarb planted so I have to wait until the markets have it in. Ann, your crisp looks so good I can almost taste it.

LOL, coconut, you really SHOULD have known by the plating, mine would have been eaten straight from the pan, probably! Ann T has much better restraint. (grin)
