Does anyone know what this discoloration on my kumquat tree is?

Hi all, I'm new here and I need some help with my kumquat tree. I grew it from seed, it's about 4-5 years old and in the last few months the leaves have become discolored and some are becoming misshapen. It's a potted plant that lives outside in the warmer months but winters inside. I can't quite seem to find exactly what is wrong with it or how to treat it. Any help as to what is going on or how to treat it would be SUPER appreciated :)

Looks like massive spider mite infestation to me. Can you see using a magnifying glass if you have tiny spider mites on your tree? Or minute webbing? We can tell, because we only have one leaf to look at :-) Check carefully for spider mites as well as for scale. If you could post some more photos of your tree, close ups of the leaves, branches and an overall photo of the tree, that would help.

I have been growing meiwa kumquats from seed. They are consistently attacked by spider mites. I believe that the roots do not change their nutrient formulation to defend itself against pest and this is why they are near impossible to grow from seed. I am curious if you have picture of your tree when it was doing very well. Has it produce fruit yet. Al my kumquat tree have died. They put on a growth spurts of significance harden off loose all the leave and die back to 6 inches and then put on beautiful growth. Harden off then infestation takes of every leaf. This stripping growing process happens 2 time a year and my tree went from 8 inches to 30 inches back to 8 they grow to 30 and die back to 8.

" No tree is going to survive inside like that for long unless it has greenhouse conditions which is highly unlikely. " False!! These are common houseplants and if given the proper care, they can live inside for many years. They don't require a greenhouse! The photos are a bit far away to show enough detail but the first looks to be Ficus benjamina and the second either a Shefflera or Pachira (money tree). They could be silk as well but look a bit too real for that.

Yes, remove it. It is not a valuable tree - it's basically a throwaway in the nursery industry. All prunus are susceptible, some significantly more than others. You can treat with a fungicide and a lot of pruning, but I wouldn't bother with a purple leaf plum. If you're looking for a spring flowering tree, consider service berry (amelanchier)

Those are burls and can be very common with willows. Burls are a type of growth where the wood grain forms in a deformed manner and typically show as a rounded, knobby growth on the trunk or limbs. Causes are varied but they are not generally know to cause damage to the tree they appear on. Large burls tend to be very sought after by woodworkers for the stunning patterns they exhibit. Just an FYI but willows are known to be prone to a whole slew of disease and insect problems as well as weak wood that can cause limb drop or splitting. The decline you are seeing could be a reflection of one or more of those problem as well as just a sign of old age.

no gal.. i meant the first pic.. those trees are not 10 feet tall .. the gate is at least 6 feet tall at the center.. the garage behind is at least 15 feet tall .. and the trees are bigger than both ... my caution is what i could do when i was 20.. or 30 .. and well into my 40s.. is not something i can do today ... and if i had to pay for this type of maintenance.. i could not do it ... but then.. from the first pic.. those peeps arent really worried about budget ... theyll just have the majordomo call the butler and tell him to call the gardener.. who will call the guys who will come do it .. lol ... the problem with finding random pix online.. is you randomly dont know where the planting is.. and it really doesnt matter what the plants in the pic are ... because you will never know if they will grow in your area ... the better post may have been.. what can i use to make tree line like this ... and others have already offered such suggestions ... ken

Thanks Steve and Patty! I have been slow to respond, but I took your advice and bought some insecticidal soap and have been treating my plant on a regular basis. I also repotted my little collection with a lighter mixture of wood chips, pearlite, and cactus soil. I've purchased some Dyna-Gro was well and if it ever stops raining I'll fertilize them. I'll post pictures when I get a chance!
