Does anyone know what these bumps on my willow tree are

When we bought our house 5 years ago one of my favorite things was are big willow tree in the back yard. I have know idea what kind or how old it is though , but the last year or 2 I noticed it's less full of leaves and I also noticed these bumps all on the trunk which could have always been there I just may have not payed attention but I'm wondering if this is some kind of disease or fungus or if my tree is just old and dying

Have you been having any drought years lately? Because that is one possible cause of the tree becoming thin looking.

I'm pretty sure willows need water. The only two I'm familair with are Salix babylonica weeping willow Salix caprea pussy willow both grow at water edge. maybe check here: Here is a link that might be useful: right here

" No tree is going to survive inside like that for long unless it has greenhouse conditions which is highly unlikely. " False!! These are common houseplants and if given the proper care, they can live inside for many years. They don't require a greenhouse! The photos are a bit far away to show enough detail but the first looks to be Ficus benjamina and the second either a Shefflera or Pachira (money tree). They could be silk as well but look a bit too real for that.

That spiralized form is one of the possible signs of ACP (see the header picture) which is often a precursor of Greening. https://www2.ipm.ucanr.edu/agriculture/citrus/asian-citrus-psyllid/ So I would contact your local extension service (it's mandatory in most citrus production states - FL, CA, TX, and many other states with limited citrus have quarantines zones for ACP/Greening.

Those are burls and can be very common with willows. Burls are a type of growth where the wood grain forms in a deformed manner and typically show as a rounded, knobby growth on the trunk or limbs. Causes are varied but they are not generally know to cause damage to the tree they appear on. Large burls tend to be very sought after by woodworkers for the stunning patterns they exhibit.

Just an FYI but willows are known to be prone to a whole slew of disease and insect problems as well as weak wood that can cause limb drop or splitting. The decline you are seeing could be a reflection of one or more of those problem as well as just a sign of old age.

If the tree has been getting subjected to drought conditions in later years the solution is to water it.

if you are really concerned about the tree .. you should have an onsite inspection by a certified arborist .. especially if it overhangs anything important ... peace of mind should be worth a few bucks ....
