Have white marble counter on copper sink?

I am putting a white marble countertop on an undermounted copper sink. It's supposed to be installed tomorrow (Monday).

Now someone has brought to my attention that there might be some staining issues. I have researched it now and found information that copper can stain marble in presence of moisture.

Just wondering if anyone here has white or light marble with a copper sink. And if so, do you have any staining? If no staining, do you have a barrier between the marble and copper - such as lacquer on the sink top touching the marble?

I am planning to call the fabricator tomorrow morning about providing a barrier of some sort. I'm thinking maybe a 1/16" gap that would be caulked. Or maybe a gasket. I have also thought about lacquering the top edge of the sink. Or putting tape (clear packing tape) around the top edge (that would be under the countertop).

Anyone here have some experience with or knowledge about this issue? I would greatly appreciate any help in sorting this out.

No help to offer, but intrigued by the issue (and reallly want to see that beautiful combo!!)

Did your fabricator offer any solutions?

My fabricator had not heard anything about that issue but he suggested shimming up to a 1/32" gap that would be filled with silicone caulk. He also said he would apply the sealer to the underside of counter around the sink. I feel much better about it now.

There is a little more fab work to do on that counter (runnels and hole for soap dispenser) so install will be either tomorrow or Wednesday.

I will post a reveal when finished. Still have a countertop cabinet, appliances, and plumbing to do. We are so close and I can't wait!

lol...i totally want carerra. i would get soapstone if i could. in my last house we remodeled and i got cobra soapstone which was great. i would recommend it to anyone and everyone. our last house was in PA. now we are in florida. i am going to get a cobra sink made and shipped down here but soapstone down here would cost us too much for counters....over $100 more a sq ft than carerra. but carerra is my #2 choice and i love how it looks. but...i cook for reals and i know "patina" is my destiny. but still...i don't know if i am prepared for "the big one!" like an 8" turmeric stain or whatever. on the plus size..the cost here is about $44 a sq ft. it's beautiful. it's natural. it doesn't contain any toxic resins or formaldehyde or radon. i can live with some wabi sabi and if we sell 20 years from now and it looks like crap, i guess we will have to replace it w/new marble to get it ready for the market. who knows! i just want to see some pics ;)

terry, do you mean LG Hi-Macs? Lomac is a drug. Hi-Macs is certainly comparable to Corian at a better price but it sure doesn't have more colors than Corian. Anyway, I'm sorry I can't help you with your sink concerns as I don't have a solid-surface counter. You may want to try searching "integrated sinks". One thing I know about SS sinks is that you need to run the hot water from the faucet before you pour hot liquids into the sink (like draining pasta) because the temperature shock can cause the sink to crack. My first choice for a counter top is either quartz or granite. Since I couldn't find anything I liked I puchased stock laminate counter top from Menards, but I'm not sure of the name. My intention is to live with this counter top until I find something I love. (most granite yards are hours away.) I was going to use this copper sink as an drop-in and change it to an under mount when the new counters were installed. I just spoke to a rep from Copper Sinks Online and I've decided not to install the copper sink at all, until the new countertops are installed. Now, it's back to the lumber yard! Thanks for responding, my kitchen is only a few days from completion and you've helped me though a nightmare!

In Benjamin Moore, you could try Newburyport Blue (HC155) or, in the new Century collection, either Blue Muscari (U9) or Delft (U0). The Century collection is not available at all Benjamin Moore outlets, but it's worth looking for.

We haven't seen this issue before with our copper sinks, but without knowing the brand, it sounds like you're taking some smart precautions just in case there are impurities in the copper used to make your sink. In your original question, you mentioned possibly lacquering the top edge of the sink and we'd like to point out for you and others that would be a mistake, as lacquer is sure to crack and peel over time and will result in a very uneven, splotchy patina finish.
