Anyone watch TV?
Comments (18)I've only watched season 1 of dexter...pretty good. It's odd when I find myself cheering for the serial killer...there's something attractive about characters possessing extraordinary traits and yet exhibiting weaknesses or vulnerabilities. Hence the vampire craze, perhaps. Q - I'm a really bad reader and rarely venture outside of genres I'm used to, which happen to be alternative reality fiction, near-future science fiction, anything involving supernatural things (clearly I have a problem with reality) and other social commentary related works....with that said, I almost ALWAYS enjoy what people have recommended me even though at first I'm always apprehensive over things like autobiographies and historical fiction. I like the direction this thread is heading so I'm going to shamelessly steer it towards that direction. Favorite reads, everyone? Anyone? For me: The Chrysalids - John Wyndham Martian Chronicles - Ray Bradbury A Fine Balance - Rohinton Mistry Brave New World - Aldous Huxley Jane Eyre - Charlotte Bronte (I know...wtf right) Angraecoid Orchids: Species from the African Region - Joyce Stewart (sorry I just had to...I'm obnoxious)...See MoreDoes anyone watch Grey's Anatomy , Lost or Prison Break?
Comments (89)Dena, I remember when my DH was laid off. Even though he hated the job he was laid off from, it was very difficult for both of us, anyway. I hope your DH ends up with a better job, and things go well for you. I'll keep you both in my thoughts and prayers. BTW, my DH found a job he liked much better, but paid a fraction of what he was making before. In the end, the happiness in the job is much more important than the money. I forgot about Libby being in the hospital with Hurley. I'm sure this is all leading up to a big season finale cliffhanger, but what can they do to top what they've done so far? I didn't pay any attention to that clue thing. It's a gimmick for the local news station and their sweeps. I don't watch that channel much any more for news since they've gotten a lot more trashy than they used to, and I like Kristine Kahanek's (sp?) weather reports the best. Comments (17)Hi Wintercat and Barb: I'm glad to see rose-growers here in Cooking Forum. Roses are NO longer important to me ... already have too many (60+ roses). My focus is taking care of my family through healthy cooking. I agree with everyone that daily exercise boost up the metabolism. Yesterday I spent 1 1/2 hour shoveling the ice .. was sweating & hot for hours afterwards. Grainlady has a good point that healthy fats like Coconut oil raise metabolism. Omega-3 is used to treat Raynaud syndrome: defined as excessively reduced blood flow in response to cold, or extreme pain with cold temp. My kid eats at least 1 cup of walnut per day, plus 2 tablespoons of flax oil (high in Omega-3 and Omega-9). My kid is always warm. Studies show that Omega-3 increase the "brown fat" storage with higher metabolism. My kid hates it when school made her wear her coat during recess. She never wear gloves nor hat, even in our freezing zone 5a winter. I notice the same effect when I have walnut or flax oil for dinner: very warm at night, so I only use that during the winter. The "China Study" is a landmark book by Dr. Campbell. According to Wikipedia, "Dr. Colin Campbell, Jacob Gould Schurman Professor Emeritus of Nutritional Biochemistry at Cornell University, and his son Thomas M. Campbell II, a physician. It was first published in the United States in January 2005 and had sold over one million copies as of October 2013, making it one of America's best-selling books about nutrition." I read that book twice, it showed that a vegetarian diet resulted in higher metabolism than a high-protein diet, plus reduced rate of cancer & heart-attack. The book included lab. studies on rats which showed they are much more active on a vegetarian diet, than a high-protein diet. Here's an explanation from Wikipedia "... consuming diets high in protein and fat transfers calories away from their conversion into body heat to their storage form as body fat." On sensitivity to cow-milk, Wikipedia explained, "... autoimmune diseases are more prevalent among people who live at higher geographic latitudes, and also among people who consume a diet high in animal protein, particularly cow's milk. ... Vitamin D is important for the proper regulation of the immune system, and that for people who live at higher geographic latitudes, a lack of exposure to ultraviolet sunlight can result in a deficiency. The consumption of animal protein, especially casein in cow's milk, results in higher concentrations of calcium in the blood, which inhibits the process by which the body activates vitamin D in the kidneys to a form that helps repress the development of autoimmune diseases.[21] Here is a link that might be useful: The China Study book by Dr. Campbell This post was edited by Strawberryhill on Tue, Jan 14, 14 at 9:44...See MoreDid anyone watch 'I Can Make You Thin'?
Comments (66)WoW!!! This has really taken a negative direction between two of KT's finest! Well, I'm not here alot but I think I gotta chime in! What I have to say maybe nothing more than rambling..be forewarned! LOL!! The age old battle of losing weight. I'M AN EXPERT at trying!!! I don't have a clue what it's like to have only 5-10 lbs. to lose. Nope it's a whole lot more than that. So, I can't identify with Flamey. I don't know what it's like to lose 150 lbs., so I can't identify with Granlan either(I honestly wish I could). But I can identify with Gran on this. I also know peeps that will spit and sputter about 5-10 lbs. just to fish for compliments and those peeps after about the second time, will fall off my radar screen. I don't think Flamey was doing that or rubbing this in anyone's nose. If she feels comfortable weighing 5-10 lbs. less, then that is her choice. I think her original point was just letting others know about this TV show and discussing it. Yet on the other hand Gran, I don't think anyone here including myself know how hard you worked and the determination it took to achieve what you did. I too kind of think that the peeps that have 5-10 lbs. to lose, aren't struggling half as much as those of us who have 100 or more lbs. to lose. Heck, half of their excess could even be the dreaded 'water weight' that we all know and have heard about. But there again, I have never been in their shoes. But they also have never been in the situation of having to lose a vast amount of weight. So, I honestly think nobody knows the others personal challenges and battles they are fighting. What one sees as a mere drop in the bucket, someone else might see it as insurmountable. But my words to Flamey and others, realize that Gran and I and possibly others do think that sometimes thin people just don't seem to understand that 5-10 lbs. does sound petty to those of us who have/need to lose 10 times that. And yes, I would bet that those of us who do need to lose that amount of weight have kicked ourselves many times over for not dealing with this when it was only 5-10 lbs. We have beaten ourselves up over this time and time again and anybody who looks at us know we need to lose weight, yet looking at Flamey, we can't see that through the same eyes as you do. We can't comprehend the magnitude of their obsession with those few lbs. So, Gran, I can identify and understand what you meant in your original post to Flamey....See MoreRobert (zone 7a, Oklahoma)
