No spoilers, please. I just started watching DA last week. :-)

I said the other day that binge-watching Downton Abbey has me thinking the characters are real. I was half expecting Mrs. Patmore to show up to make lunch. Maybe they're stopping the show because they're starting to feel real themselves. :-)

Rhizo, I think you should stay away from this thread. I'm going to ignore it myself--and I'm all the way up to Season 3!

I am sorry to hear that. I am a big fan.

HAha, Susan....you are clearly an amateur when it comes to binge watching! I am two episodes shy of the end of season 4!

Robert is religiously watching his beloved Kentucky and Louisville teams, and of course, all of the games between any other teams that have the faintest chance of impacting Kentucky. So, I sit down here just to be with him....with my earbuds and my Kindle Fire. :-)

I've just loved DA and the characters and will mourn the loss of the program just like all fans will.

I never got into this show. Friends greatly recommended it, so I watched one show. Like any soap opera, I was lost, had no idea who was who, what was going on. I would wait a couple years for the whole run to come out on DVD, then I'll binge-watch. Gossip wise, I heard Maggie Smith announced she was done with her role, in real time her character would be about 100 years old. So I guess since she's a main character, they decided to wrap it up on a high note.

It only makes sense. The interesting aspects of another era (upstairs and downstairs) are coming to a close as the program progresses through time. I'd expect it to culminate with WWII on the horizon.

I'm a big fan and will miss it.

Will miss it, too. Some of the one-liners (and not from just Maggie Smith's character) have been hilarious! And even tho I'd not describe myself as a clotheshorse or really interested in today's fashion world, I find the costumes wonderful to look at. Thank goodness PBS and Netflix keep me "stocked" with British dramas!

Someone needs to start a petition. They need to take a look at the Star War's machine and go back to when the Dowager was the lady of the manor at Downton and come forward. I want to see how the Earl and the American met/married. I want to see how the Dowager dealt with all that. Forget moving forward. The stories are getting to modern, to same as what ya can see anywhere. I want to see the past!!

I was so sad to hear this news. I love the show. I agree with arcy, go further back. What I like about this show is there's no, or at least very little, yelling and screaming and swearing and nudity and just plain trash that's on so many other shows.

They are so in control and prim and proper, most of the time!

Yes! Yes! Yes!!

I do hope Edith lives happily every after.

Ditto!

The article I read online yesterday said the writer of the show, Julian Fellowes, has been hired by NBC to write a period series based in NYC called The Gilded Age. It could be good also.

Maybe, just maybe, Julian will move some if not most of the Downton gang to NYC.

I had read a while back it might be Tom after he moves across the pond. That might have been an idea Mr. Fellowes was kicking around or it might have been gossip or it might have been what the network was thinking. Either way, that might be a good story IF America keeps their "creative" hands off the script. There's a reason we like the British produced shows!
