Floor plan help - master bedroom & bathroom doors too close?
Comments (6)Thanks so much for your input everyone! Bevangel, special thanks to you for modifying my picture. It definitely helps to have a visual! I think moving the doors further into the hall will work, and should be very easy for the builder to do. We'd lose a little more exterior hallway space (the bedroom doors were originally at the dotted line), but having the longer hallway within the master bedroom will be more dramatic. I love this website! I'm glad I finally decided to join and stop lurking. ;)...See Moremaster bedroom floor plan help
Comments (13)You're wise to think ahead. My Mom was healthy as could be and went to the gym 5x a week. Then she developed parkinson's disease. Thankfully because she designed the house to age in, she was able to stay in her home until the last 6 months of her life. kirkhall is correct. Your bathrooms will not work for a wheelchair although it wouldn't be too hard to fix it in the future. You need a 60" turning radius for a wheelchair. In the future you could remove the toilet closet and that would help a lot. The other issue is are you making a wheel in shower? Meaning no curb? Doesn't look it. Also what is the distance between the shower and the vanity? Additionally did you make sure you have wide enough doors? A bathroom downstairs that is accessible? Also agree about turning the tub....See MoreI need hlep master bedroom floor plan

Comments (22)There are many on GW who don't like pocket doors. I'm NOT one of them! If they are done right, they're great! One needs a very heavy, solid wood door for privacy. The woodwork slot into which the leading edge of the door fits when closed, needs to be deep - far deeper than is typical here in the US. When it is, the fit is good and the door is as sound-proof as a normal hinge-hung door. I learned this 2 years ago while renting a very high end house in London for a week. I have pocket doors in my own house - 4 to be exact. I have no problem with them except they don't close quite as closely as I would prefer. When I looked at the pocket door to the bathroom in London, I could quickly see why it worked so well - a deep "pocket" for it to close into. It made no noise at all while being closed. I have a feeling that all pocket door hardware is not created equal! The top quality hardware will be quiet and seamless. This is not the place to save a bit of money....See Moremary8153
