more countertop/backsplash conundrums- mixing quartz w/ marble bs
Comments (29)Fwiw, I just mixed faux-marble quartz (Lagoon) with a Carrera backsplash and at least in it's pre-grouted state, I'm really happy. It was hard for me to find a backsplash that worked well with the grey-ish tones of the Lagoon, mostly because my cabinets are painted taupe. Anything that "matched" the cabinets seemed too brownish for the counters. The Carrera blends the two perfectly. I think it also works because I wound up using a very small-scale herringbone pattern, so the patterns in the marble tiles are less pronounced. Fwiw, I don't see the calacutta tiles that the OP posted working with a greyish quartz that's similar to Lagoon, and I'd also be concerned about pattern overload with a subway tile. But having worried about the fake-next-to-real problem, I wanted to at least add my experience that it can be done. One of the prettiest kitchens on here, done by a pro, is GW user @kompy, who used a different marble subway with Lagoon counters, and it looks stunning....See Morewwyd? white silgranite ii or stainless in marble countertop?
Comments (10)Thank you for feed back. I am a bit torn over this, as I'm a tad tired of our stainless sink. Our frameless base is 33", so 3/4" sides brings the actual allowance to 31 1/2". I am going to call Sink Setter today for their width, and if possible insert such from below if width still works. I should have said I read many threads here on just this matter btw. Breezy, your kitchen and suggestion of the metallic grey of course came to mind. I have the Blanco sample, brought it to the actual slab-its blanco venatino with nice grey veining- and it actually looked better than the white Blanco sample. I've got that on my mind and may re-visit the shop with my paint board, blanco cinder and the mg. BuildinVA-Stainless is such a work horse and has done us well for decades. I'm amazed at good stainless properties and doubt it will ever go out of style in a kitchen, especially the sinks. The Oceania is perfect size and shape. I hope your remodel is going well. O/T, which under cabinet light brand did you choose? Still struggling with this. needinfo1-I like the look of fireclay, but am concerned about their weight and build out from cabinet sides for support? I should look to see if Kohler makes a classic white cast iron in 27" width (we have that now, it's fine) which with 31.5" of cabinet frame minus 27" sink, would leave 4.5" or 2.25" of wood each side for support? Is that enough do you think. I'm visiting Fergusons again so will look more at these and faucets....See MoreFaux Marble Answer...Okite
Comments (3)Yes, we need a picture sooner than Christmas!! When does he get back? You need to upload photos to a site like photobucket. Then it is really easy. Can you do that? Uploading is easy if the pix are on your computer. Anyway, i look forward to seeing it....See MoreWalnut countertops and marble backsplash? Too much?
Comments (10)Thanks for all of the input! I was second guessing myself on whether wood countertops on top of wood floors in a narrow space would just look like a lot of wood or whether it would help balance all of the white cabinetry, and I wasn't sure if the marble was too much on top of that since some kitchen designers warn about using too many elements. But I want all of the pretties in my kitchen! I'm going to go for it. Yay, waterlox! Trailrunner, I'm so happy to hear you're loving yours after 8 years--I'll definitely be going with it. I had misgivings about wood countertops until I ran across all of the reviews of waterlox. And the marble fabricator I'd go with has a great acid wash treatment that reduces the appearance of etching. And it helps that I know I'll be okay with some dings and chips and scratches, especially since my current place has a cottage/farmhouse vibe to it. I loved the quartz in my last place, but it chipped around the undermount sink after five years. I think i'll be less upset with wood or marble since I'm not expecting the same durability...plus with wood I can always sand it down and refinish it, and marble can be rehoned....See Moreromy718
