Countertop & BS decisions - Carrara Marble or Cambria Whitney?
Comments (8)Hmm... I think maybe you have hit on two things bothering me - 1) that the Cambria goes better in the master and 2) trying to constrain myself to doing both countertops in the same material. Maybe that's what I need to change. Although the opinions I've gotten on here like my choices and the Cambria - my designer and the builder's rep think I should go Carrara. And, the accent tile in the master will show much more Carrara than my samples do so I think I'll do that in the master. But, I'm sad about the Cambria. :( It has really grown on me. And, in the back of my mind, the Carrara is about 1/2 the price so if I really don't like it in a few years I can replace it. It's not like having to tear the floor up. =) Throughout this process of picking everything out when something keeps nagging at me I know I've got something wrong. Once I find the "right" answer it feels comfortable. Not to say I don't continue to see beautiful things, but I feel content with my choice. And I haven't quite felt that contentedness with the bathroom selections yet. I'm content with the tiles and accent glass, not so much the countertops. I'll check out the Crema Marfil. Thanks for the suggestion. If you or anyone else has an additional suggestion for the guest countertop please let me know! Thanks!...See MoreIcestone counters...need help w/ backsplash tile
Comments (42)Hi Amy-- Sorry for the bad link. I think I fixed it below. Sadly, my pics don't give you the best representation of the color. Probably the closest is in picture #2, and the Walker Zanger catalog is pretty close to true as well. The green is more muted than bottle green, like a lighly grayed sage. And I have really come to love the subtle iridescence (that originally was a compromise for my husband). In most light, you don't see it, only when a ray of direct sunlight hits... since you're familiar with Oceanside glasstile, you probably know what I mean. We used Laticrete grout in Lichen and then we found Lutron outlet covers that matched the tile color perfectly (installed after my pics were taken). Anyway, your cabinets, Icestone and design are gorgeous. I don't think you can go wrong with any of the choices you are mulling. Good luck! Comments (20)If budget was a consideration for the Eco Cosentino Iron Ore, it will probably be a factor with a real blue granite. Besides, if you want your bs to stand out, I'd let it be the one strong blue element in the room. I'd like the Blue Volga or Blue Pearl because the blues in those are subtle and won't shout for attention. If you have the blue granite picked first, I'd want a calm bs. If you try to have too many stars in the room, then it gets noisy. We have Corian in their Rain Cloud pattern and it has a marble like vibe but it also has some small amount of taupe-ish beige. You would have to see if its soft white works with your cab's paint color. Here is a mellow pic of our counters. There is more color to them IRL but from the distance, they do look like a soft white. I am posting pix of this and linking to another one below to give you an idea of the color range to go with your tiles. You could find the equivalent in stone, but we are happy with the Corian. (try to find the seam.. even blown up big it is well done) I could also see a counter with an orange beige tone in it. That would work with the wood look floor and still pair with your cabs and bs. Comments (98)Hey, barncatz: Every word of consolation and support helps. I'm trying not to rush the BS decision, but I know I'll feel much better about the countertop experience once I'm not staring at these sliver add-ons. One of my very early inspirations was Majra's kitchen. She, just like pipdog, used the mosaics for a lovely effect. And this is why I spent so much time last year looking at mosaics. But the mosaics seem a bit too busy (for me) up close. The rest of my kitchen is a work in progress. Lotsa 9-1/2' walls that will need to be painted again (probably a cool white -- the next challenge!), and a ton of natural light coming in. Baseboards, pantry door and trim are all semi-gloss white, and ceiling is white. Kitchen is open to the family room: taupe walls with a white fireplace/mantel -- white trim throughout the entire house. pippiep: Matching grout it is, then! One decision down. :) I've marked out the areas that will require BS tile. As you can see, it's not very expansive, and each one not very large. So, I need to find the correct scale/dimension tile that will look right in these spaces. I think using larger (3x6) tiles in a herringbone pattern will leave me with a bunch of chopped up squares in the bartop and cutout window areas. At least with the newest elongated hex pattern, most of the hexes will be retained....See MoreRelated Professionals
