Leaf spot on yoshino cherry

We had a beautiful yoshino cherry that we planted about 10 years ago that developed what we were told was leaf spot. It flowered beautifully and looked great all year until late summer when the leaves would start to look pitiful and drop. This happened every year for the last 3-4 years. We tried a fungicide that was applied every 7 weeks from bloom through fall. It seemed to help some, but didn't cure it completely.

We have since moved and I would like to try again with yoshino cherry. There are 4 of them planted across the street and I noticed last summer that they seem to have the same fungus. Is there something we can do to prevent the fungus from developing on trees that we plant?

I know there are other varieties of flowering cherry, but I'd really like to find a way make yoshino work. In our area they usually bloom on our anniversary.
