How to deal with kitchen recycling/trash ?
Comments (6)I am building a house, and this is something I was really concerned about, too, when designing our kitchen. I found some slide-out trash containers (at Home Depot) that each have two cans, one behind the other. I bought two of them and put them right next to each other so there are four containers in total. They are going in an undercab, and I'm having fronts made for what will appear to be doors but will hook to the front of the sliders and pull the cans out two at a time. I'm planning to designate one for trash, one for cans, one for glass and plastic, and one for paper/burnables. The only thing I haven't figured out yet is what to do with large cardboard. I may be able to keep it, flattened, inside my pantry. I'm sorry I can't post a picture, but we're still building and don't actually have this installed yet. I posted a similar question, "How do you organize your recycling," on the organization forum, and got several responses if you want to check that out. Good luck!...See Moreattractive recycling bin?
Comments (8)Are you open to thinking a little outside the box? Friends of mine keep their recycling in trash cans that have lids and a foot pedal to open the lid. Two of them are fairly small and are tucked under the kitchen table and the other one is larger and sits in their mudroom. My cousin has hooks hanging on the stairwell of their cellar stairs. They sort the glass, plastic and metal into plastic bags and hang them on the hooks. (These are high enough so that they don't block the stairway and so that the dogs can't get at them.) Newspapers go in a wooden box that her husband built, right next to the fireplace. They have a gadget that rolls the newspapers into logs to burn in the fireplace. I have a tall plastic trashcan in my study for all the paper recycling because that's where I sort the mail and read the newspaper and magazines. With the recycle "bin" right there, I don't have to remember to take the paper recycling anywhere; the recycle can sits right next to the trash can. I line it with a paper grocery bag which is what my town wants us to use for paper recycling. Both cans are tucked out of sight between my desk and the wall. I have two plastic totes with handles that tuck away in a corner of my kitchen (my apartment has no other place to put recycling). They are taller and narrower than most recycling bins, so they take up less floor space. One is for metal, the other for glass and plastic (how the town wants us to sort things). I carry them out and put the contents in the official recycling bins that are shared by all the tenants on recycling pick-up day. My experience with most recycling "systems" is that there is not enough room in the bins for at least one type of recycling. They clearly assume that you have the same amount of glass, plastic and metal recycling. Sometimes the lids are cumbersome. Can you look around your home for other small spaces to put some of the recycling? Or look for any attractive containers that are the size you need? Don't lock yourself into things that are labeled as recycling bins....See MoreCorner cabinet - trash or super susan
Comments (5)I'm with Holly - that does seem like a lot of trash and recycle. How big is your family? As for your other question - I love my Super Susan. I have mine in a diagonal corner, with a drawer above, so I have less height on the susans themselves. I measured my tallest small appliance, and had the cabinet maker space the shelves accordingly. If they were the same height, my rice cooker wouldn't fit. Mine contains the following: rice cooker, crock pot, mixer, waffle iron, George Foreman grill, colanders. I also have a 9" cabinet next to my sink, used for cookie sheets and cutting boards. I have a little drawer above mine, which isn't much use - I wish I had instead put a shelf inside, for things like long aluminum foil or rolling pins. What do you plan to put in the pull-out?...See MoreWhere did you put recycle bin pull-out cabinet?
Comments (10)I have a double trash pullout, the front is used for garbage and the rear is used for recyclables (glass, cans, bottles). Looking at my sink, the trash cabinet is to the left. The dishwasher is to the right. A couple times a week DH dumps the recyclables into a bin in the garage, which he either leaves at the curb on pick-up day (we pay for trash pick up) or he takes it to the transfer station. We are not required to separate the recyclables when we put them at the curb, so we don't need 3+ bins. I love Linda's setup, though....See Morelookintomyeyes83
