If it was mine, I would try to run the ESET scan, but if you're already infected it may not be easy. Nothing to be lost by trying, though. If it won't run in normal mode, try booting into SAFE MODE...then see if it will run.

Jerry, I am just curious and don't mean to come off sounding like a jerk. But what do you on these computers that you are always having these issues, it seems like your here all the time with different malady's and this and that not working properly?

Don't know anything about advanced system care, but I think I would not be using it. Instead, keep the malwarebytes up to date, get the free avast for everyday monitoring, and get CCleaner. Run CCleaner and see what it finds. Let CCleaner do it's job to clean out your machine. Have it work on your C drive and when it's done with that, run the registry check. Don't be clicking any boxes you're not sure of, just the analyze box and "fix problems" box. And defrag your machine after everything's done.

Advanced systems care is awesome, and the Free version is just fine, and Malewarebytes is also great, no need to run full scan but quick scan once a week is good, and your anti virus should be on duty 24/7 protecting you, AVG2015 is tops followed closely by Avast all Free. ASC does not need to run all the time or be in start up, I use only once in awhile for registry scan mostly. I have 4 PC's online in my home and no problems. I pay for no software I can get better for Free. Oh and PS I fix PC problems almost daily for other seniors, and most often need to install ASC and run a full scan and then clean up remove junk in programs and or unnecessary toolbars etc.

I have run Ccleaner in the past, but stopped when I got advice not to mess with the Registery.
My W8 and W7 machines run well, albeit I run the W8 with the "Flash" video stuff set to run only on my approval in Firefox... that helps a lot.

The XP media machine is my wife's and I have given some thought to upgrading her to a W8 touch screen.

I'll update the Advanced System Care tool and try the ESET scanner.

I love Crap Cleaner (Ccleaner) and use it regularly, would recommend that you not poke around in the registry on your own but Ccleaner gives you the option to back up the registry before making changes, cleaning what they suggest hasn't been a problem for anyone I know.

Another product from piriform that you should use is a program called Defraggler .. it works VERY well and can make a huge difference in speeding up an older PC.

Finally there is a windows version of the open source Anti-virus software Clam called ClamWin that is available from the website of the same name, most importantly under the section "user guides" there are instructions on how to make a portable install that you can put on a USB stick, a very useful thing to have.

I use Malwarebytes, CCleaner, Spybot , Super-antispyware & Avast AV. All free and obviously Avast is the only thing running all the time, the others I open, update and run once a month or every six weeks if I feel like it. I don't have CCleaner set to mess with anything more than how it comes (except not deleting passwords) along with the rest on XP, Vista, W7 Pro (Current laptop) & and also on my W8 Surface Pro 2 and I have never had any issues at all.

In recent years the free A's, AVG, Avast and Avira, have been reported to be so close in reliability when tested that any one of them is satisfactory.

I have been using the same free applications as MWM, except I use AVG, and I also recommend using CC only in the default settings.

I avoid anything from IObit for personal reasons due to their corporate reputation.

Thanks, I went from commercial to AVG when I retired and turned in my company computer, in 2003. I was disappointed by something in AVG about 7 years ago and went to Avira Free.

Yes, I have strange problems... the XP machine that brought me here this time was even having problems sending email from Thunderbird...it downloaded okay but time out on send. In parallel tonight I switched back to DSL from my trial of Comcast Cable (don't see any real improvement due to speed) and I tried Thunderbird over DSL and the message went right out. I will Call Comcast tonight and drop my cable access. I'm too much in bed with the DSL email service to want to change my address. I may migrate of a few months and may drop the telephone all together. Changes in my life of late makes keeping the wireline phone doubtful. I also have an email account with att.com mail (now Yahoo) and that does not works with any access, like gmail etc.

Jerry- I hate to say it, but a computer that old may simply have a variety of accumulated software errors in the operating system and with other software. My suspicion is that you will spend hours trying one "fix" program after another and still be no better off. There may well be no malware on your computer (or you could have something really nasty like a rootkit infection which would be nearly impossible for you to remove). Have you ever tried to either repair the operating system using Windows, or reinstall the whole operating system? Doing that yourself, or even going to a shop to have it done may be the only thing that will fix this.
