Comments (7)rogue valley lists lyda rose as zone 5. it is a hybrid musk and most are rated for zone 6. My folks have had a hm for decades now, they are zone 5, he killed the other one and tried to kill this one when they put in the water line, for a few years he would whack it to the ground in the fall, but give up when it didn't die. now it is by the concrete porch in a shell and rock garden, never has been fertilized and just keeps living. I think they are more hardier than they are given credit for, especially after they get established. i live on the 5,6 border, i have a couple hm otto linne i planted in pasture last year, so far look fine. I also planted a tiny band of jeri jennings last fall, cane is a little dark, so we'll see. I might add that i give them no winter protection....See MoreSplit Topic: Lyda Rose/Spider Mites!
Comments (12)Spidermites: I had two bushes infested earlier - short floribundas in a prime (hot, dry) location. All the dwarf alberta spruce had spider mites also. I sprayed once with TetraSan 5 from Rosemania. I sprayed the whole garden in part because I had lost one rose to Rose Rosette. One spraying did it - all species of plant life made a quick recovery. I know the roses had red spider mites, the spruce another type. The TetraSan handled both. I have since added some of those water crystals to the soil under the two floribundas that were infested to help maintain some humidity. Short roses in hot locations seem particularly prone to spider mite infestations. I taught DH to spray down the spruce thoroughly every time he waters or has the hose out for something. I don't know what it is with those dwarf spruce though - they all have nice locations, nice soil, heavy mulch. I think they are just annoying me cause DH likes them and I don't....See MoreWhat Zone 5 roses have you had consistent luck with in in Zone 4?
Comments (5)First, thanks Gary..I didn't realze I had a response on this because I've also been posting on the "antique roses" forum and got a bunch of responses there..I did get a bunch of roses at Sam Kedem. I guess it remains to be seen if any of them make it! Twohuskies has been responding to my posts there and we're in a very similar little microclimate I think. I'll definitely look into the rose you all have suggested. And yes Gary I agree that Sam is great. He has great info on roses and is honest about what he thinks will be hardy. Here is one of my roses that seems to come back again and again that I remember being a Zone 5 but don't remember the name. I had one possible ID on the AR forum as an Austin Rose, "The Dark Lady" I'm not sure if that's right or not..The name doesn't sound familiar to me. This rose is definitely my favorite in my garden and has come for 7 winters with only minimal protection. I've lost LOTS of others since then.. look familiar to anyone?...See MoreRoses for bright shade southern exposure bed zone 5b/6a Massachusetts
Comments (26)Hi Patty, I actually bought Peter's book as a preorder from Amazon after reading about him and his book in Fine Gardening. I gave him his very first Amazon review and got a very sweet thank you note from him! I love the book and he seems to be very realistic and non biased in his assessment of a rose's performance when guaging his assessments against the few roses I already had like Easy Elegance 'Centennial' and 'Julia Child'. I had purchased several roses prior to his book and was happy to see that many I purchased came highly recommended by him. I have 2 'Poseidon' and these so far have bloomed nicely and are very healthy, and performing as he stated. We both garden in same zones and similar conditions although he is more coastal ME and I'm more inland MA. I would love to see his gardens but don't know if they're open to the public. He's only about 2 hours from me so it would be great to meet him and discuss roses with someone who is so knowledgeable. Whiteout is interesting. I just bought (against my better judgement since it's so late in the season) 2 Radler Rambling Red Climbers from High Country Roses (gallon size so hoping they'll be well established) 2 own root Double Pink Knockout Roses and 2 Livin Easy from a vendor on Etsy. Keep your fingers crossed that we have a loooong fall, lol. It's always a gamble here on when old man you know who will arrive! Sharon...See MoreMichaela (Zone 5b - Iowa)
