I don't like the look of the round. I think some shape with more height than width is better looking.

Yes, I like that one, drdeb. Size needs to be considered because, without the strong black frame like you have now, the new one could look/feel quite a bit smaller even if the same size. So, I'm wondering if you might need to up the size to make sure it doesn't look too small. Just thinking out loud.

That does make sense. On the other hand, the console table is more delicate than the other one. I think it could be overwhelmed by too big a mirror. The umbra oval is pretty similar to the current mirror (but presumably more mirror, less frame)

How wide is your new foyer table? I'd aim for a mirror width 2/3 of the table width, especially with a narrow(ish) mirror frame.

No, I don't feel that way. In fact, I was surprised when you and Bab got going on the conversation about replacing the current mirror. I like the way the black frame looks with your nearby black chair and album frames.

To me, the rim of the mirror is too plump compared to the delicacy of the new table. I do like the shape and size of the mirror and the fact that the rim is black. The Umbra oval could be a good replacement. For the record, I think a round (or square) mirror should be centered above the table.

Bab, thanks for the thoughts. Maybe I’ll get that umbra mirror. It’s not expensive, and could be returned locally if it didn’t work out. I’m gonna think a bit.

Umbra oval

Hm, it really is an oval, not an ellipse like the current one. The effect is really different. Not bad, just different. Maybe it would look better with tall black candles on the right. Or centred above the table. Hm...

I think I'd prefer the mirror centered too, but only if the mirror width is sufficient. If the mirror is a tad small, the off center positioning might work better. I really like the shape of the Umbra Oval a lot!

I like it too, I think the size is good as well. I checked the measurements and it really should be centred. There is one thing that I would like to know and that is how wide the rim on this mirror is! :) We wouldn't want you to get another wide-rimmed mirror, lol. Also, it's rubber. While that material goes well with the frames of the records and with the Hay chair, I think you'd want to make sure that you like it with the table (sturdy vs delicate). Good thing you can try it out at home and easily return it.

My guess would be the same as yours (about the rim) drdeb.

I love that Umbra, but the size concerns me a little. If it looks exactly like the rendering or bigger, it will look nice. I can't remember what it was in my house, but I once replaced a heavy looking piece of art/frame with an unframed canvas that had the exact overall dimensions, and the difference in the way it looked was substantial (and unworkable). But, I think you determined the width is 2/3 the width of the table, and if so, it really should work well. That's a rule of thumb that is pretty dependable.

Just read the latest on your thread drdeb1234! I love your house and taste and also enjoy hearing thoughts from Ann, babophz and Amoeba. OK, so I'll join the conversation if thats OK. The new entry table is great and I like your old IKEA mirror above it - the size and shape suit the table IMO. If you are inclined to spend money (!), rather than buy a new mirror I would think about something new for the entry table. The 'old' birds were really fun but if you want to ramp up the sophistication, how about an Eames bird? Would look so cool WITH your green bowl.....(excuse the lame rendering and I would face the bird in the other direction looking at the front door)

I do love the Eames bird! I was admiring him when stool shopping with my daughter recently! It would look really, really good with the bowl and both are nice with the black of the current mirror. And, he's pretty sizable.

I would be quite tempted to keep the current mirror and add the bird. The Nambe candlesticks are pretty but a little small. The bird would wow next to the bowl.

That Eames bird is very nice, certainly more sophisticated than my goofy birds. I will take a look at it when I am next at DWR. To be honest I was mostly thinking of maybe some original artwork type of sculpture, although not necessarily. I will put all this in the ol’ percolator and let it sit a while! If you’ve been following my thread at all, you know by now that my pace is glacial! (For more speedy gratification see amoeba or Ann’s dilemmas!!).

I think my next step might be to find black candles. Certainly that will involve less of an investment (Eames bird a not-inexpensive $320 here in Canada!)

Hi lisalane! I like that bird. My mum has the black one and I have a white special edition (that lives in my black bedroom). It is beautiful, but indeed rather expensive.

I'm surprised about having to search for black candles! They're common goods over here, all colours are available. I just checked my cupboard: I have black, anthracite, red, purple, pink, petrol and white candles lying around. :)

How tall are your black candles? ;-)

Ok. I had to google 'petrol color'. In my head, petroleum colored candles were not very attractive. Happy to learn it's a pretty blue-green color!

I bought a pair of black candles. And since the store required a purchase of a minimum of 3 pairs, I also picked up yellow ones and green ones.

My initial impression is that black is too....black. Too much.
