My recurring problem with sansevierias

I've grown a host of succulents for about 30 years. I've always had a minor interest in sanses, so I've had quite a few in that time. When growing rosette types, though (S. kirkii, S. sp. "silver blue" etc) I fing that after I get to 6 leaves or so, the center of the rosette dies.

I tend to grow on the dry side - too dry, I've learned over the years, so in recent years I've moved to even more open/mineral mixes with more frequent watering. But this still happens, whether with large, mature plants, or small starts, and whether the plants are in or near a window, or under artificial lights. I've noticed it happening at the end of summer - peak growth time for me here in PA.

Is this a "thing" with sanses - is there a straightforward solution? The plants don't rot - my nicely established "silver blue" became a pile of leaf cuttings, and my kirkiis always sprout new rosettes...which then die at the center. Many times I don't notice a problem other than no new growth from a given rosette...

Thoughts?
