Sounds like the door needs different hinges. Have you talked to the installer about it?

Your glass may be hung " Out of Plumb" 3/8 tempered and 1/2" even more so can swing faster in 1 direction if not "Plumb" also verify the install is set into A solid stud. I often use 2 studs glued and screwed and cross blocked to assist in the weight of hinged glass. We plan ahead for this in the framing stage.

Request your glass company comes out and uses a laser level to verify. Some hi end hinges have some adjustable measures.

Give them a chance to rectify before you lose sleep.

Don't know that the glass is out of plumb, but it's worth checking. The door isn't slamming on its own, but it does close rather firmly. I may just not be used to frameless and how it sounds or feels. Still, worth checking. As far as different hinges... what different hinges are you talking about?

That would be an excellent question for your installer. Since your shower door is frameless, the slamming has to be the result of either poor installation or inappropriate hinges. Your door may have been installed with a compression hinge versus an adjustable hinge, for example.

I feel like my door is being maligned! :) Seriously, it's not actually "slamming." Poor choice of words on my part. But the close is certainly not a "soft close," either. Those of you who have "soft close" drawers and doors know what I mean by a "soft close" door. Perhaps I should ask my question this way: Is there anything that makes a frameless glass door close more softly -- both in terms of decibels (not really the issue) or to make the motion itself seem less harsh? The door is well-balanced. It doesn't close on its own. So I don't think anything was installed incorrectly. I'm asking if there's a device that makes closing these doors as thoughtless as closing a regular wood door. When I close the door to my bathroom (for example), I don't worry about rattling the frame. Despite the fact that the glass does not rattle (and let me stress that it is not rattling... no installation errors!), I am concerned about closing a glass door because I've never had one before.

You could just tell me I'm being overly concerned. Perhaps I am. I know the glass isn't going to shatter; perhaps the only consequence of closing the door "hard" would be to weaken the door stop/seal more quickly. But I'm still asking the question. Any way to make the door close less hard?

Why do you feel it was installed correctly? Did you have a contractor install it or was this a DIY install?

It was a very reputable contractor working with an architectural firm. It's correctly installed.

In that case, I'd call the contractor back and tell him that you want him to adjust the swing so the door doesn't swing so fast. Perhaps use the words "soft close" and see where that gets you. A frameless system is expensive enough that you shouldn't have to worry about the integrity of the whole works based on how rapidly the door shuts.

It sounds like it is hitting something, yes? I think that is why we are all confused. A frameless shower, by definition (at least in my mind) has no frame. There is nothing for it to hit against. It freely swings both directions (in and out) with a narrow slit of "air" as it swings past perhaps another fixed sheet of glass.

Do you have a weather stripping of some kind it is hitting into? In that case, I think we need to see pictures to see what you consider frameless...

She has what is probably a vinyl "L" to act as a door stop that the door is hitting against. You need to describe the "slamming" a little bit better I think.

Thanks, millworkman, you saved me some picture-taking this morning. The door frame has a clear vinyl strip -- almost like weather stripping -- that is "L"-shaped and helps the door seal completely.

As far as the "slamming," you're clearly right, people are misunderstanding this. The door is perfectly plumb. It does not move unless you move it, and even so does not move too quickly. But when I close it without thinking about it -- again, as you might with a closet door, or your front door as you, in one swift motion, come into a room and close the door behind you -- it is banging on that "L." Solidly banging.

Let me say again: I don't know if this is a problem or not. Perhaps I'm just being overly-sensitive to the idea of glass banging against vinyl, and worried about the force of that door in a way one doesn't worry about the force of a wood door closing.

What I'm looking for is whether there is a product on the market that would make a frameless shower door close slowly, like the "soft close" doors on kitchen cabinetry. Or, perhaps there's another solution. Maybe there's no solution, and this is actually not a problem. I'm looking for others' expertise. If you've never had a client wonder about this... maybe it's me! I'm a grown-up. Tell me I'm crazy.

Ntrainer -- my frameless glass shower door only has the clear "weather stripping" on the bottom. As Kirkhall explained above, the door freely swings both directions (in and out) with a narrow slit of "air" as it swings past the fixed sheet of glass next to it (see photo below).

It sounds like your door has the stripping along the bottom AND one side. I wonder why the contractor did that? Is the shower head pointing right at the door or is the stall small to where the contractor thought he needed to all the stripping to prevent water from escaping out?

I am wondering if a pair of magnetic latches would help. My frameless doesnt seem to be that loud when it closes. I am wondering if you could get it to work some way on your door.

Or you can maybe just put some thin weatherstripping there so the door has something soft to hit when it closes.

I have mult shower doors all with the same strips but 1 door slams against the strip while the other closes gently what is being asked is tgere a way to adjust the tension on the hinges
