Great suggestions! I just read a story about the 6 toed "Hemingway" cats that live on the property -- cats always make for a better tour, I think. :) Will definitely look into the rest of these recommendations.

The Conch Train Tour (shuttle type train) is the best. Just follow the crowd to see the sunset at the pier/wharf. You'll see many interesting "characters" there. Just keep you eyes open as you wander around. So many interesting people and vehicles.

My favorite place to eat is Paseo on Eaton. It is like an old converted gas station.

Garbo's Grill was featured on Diners Drive-Ins and Dives this weekend. Looks yummy.

Walk Duval Street. Stop in to many of the little shops.
There is a coast guard ship that actually sank a U-boat that is open for tours.

Spend a few minutes inside the Episcopal Church

The crowds can be large at sunset - prepare yourself.

Louie's Backyard is a must for dinner at least one evening. Beautiful restaurant overlooking the ocean.

Just an update that we had a great time in Key West! We toured Earnest Hemingway's home, the Light House, Truman's Little White House, the Coast Guard Cutter, the Aquarium, the Shipwreck Museum, Mel Fisher's Museum, and the Butterfly Conservatory. Got a picture at the Southernmost point. We parasailed, spent a day at the Fort Zachery Taylor beach (so peaceful!), walked Duval Street, spent one evening at Mallory Square, did a Sunset Cruise, and ate at Blue Heaven and Jimmy Buffett's Margaritaville. I highly recommend renting a scooter or bike for anyone planning to vacation there. There's fewer parking options for the scooters versus the bikes, but scooters got us around town quicker. While the island is small, it's big enough that having transportation will save your feet. Thank you all for your suggestions! It was very helpful!

You must take bug repellent to,keep away the no-see-ums. They nearly ate me alive.

Interestingly, the bugs must not be out this time of year. We had zero bites or even sightings. Maybe they hatch once the rainy season hits?

Edited to add that I did see a woman with textbook examples of bedbug bites all over her arms and legs. Her hotel room must have been terribly infested. I wanted to ask her if she knew that's what caused the bites so she could take steps to not bring the bugs home with her, but couldn't figure out how to do that politely so I didn't say anything.
