Best way to protect hardwood near doors
Comments (4)I have been told that you should not use area rugs with rubber or latex backings. Does anyone know why this is? It is sometimes difficult to find the rug you want without this backing. Would not the mat that you put under the rug be made of the latex, also?...See MoreProtecting hardwood floors
Comments (5)Sigh...the description tells it all: "...PVC..." Sorry but PVC is VINYL!!!! And VINYL has a chemical reaction to hardwood floor finishes! They are not allowed to go anywhere near each other. Vinyl and latex (natural rubber as well as most forms of man-made rubber) are DEATH to hardwood floor finishes. The 'plasticizers' in vinyl (PVC) and in latex/rubber products (the stuff that makes them soft and 'rubbery') are the culprits. These plasticizers are have a chemical reaction (touch) once placed on top of the urethane/polyurethane finishes. And to be clear, it is the hardwood floor/finish manufacturer that dictates if something is 'safe' for use on hardwoods. Which the link does not say....it just says "protects hardwood floors"...but it does not have the magic words: "Safe for Use with Hardwood Floors". I'm sorry this has happened. To figure out if any of this has to do with "curing", simply run your fingers over the grid pattern. If you can "feel" the grid pattern, then it is a curing issue (the weft has left indentations IN the finish = soft finish = curing was not allowed given enough time). I would go with felt in this area until the time comes to have the floors refinished (in 20 years or so). Good luck....See MoreNeed advise for best hard wood floor finish for longevity/protection.
Comments (6)Sigh...it sounds like a low-end finish to begin with. A duration of 5 years is abysmal. Do you have photos? I prefer a HIGH END 2 part European finish. The toughest of the tough come with serious protection. The gold standard is Bona Traffic HD (the HD is SUPER important). It is easy to find (harder to finance...but you want tough/durable not cheap/useless). One that I worked with on CORK (yes... the softest most difficult hardwood to live with) is Loba 2K Supra AT (the AT is SERIOUSLY IMPORTANT). It is harder to find and even harder to finance but SOOOO worth it. It has a velvety silky feel to it, it is extremely tough and it has some of the best 'low slip' ratings in the industry. No matter which high-end 2 part European product you work with (should be $150 - $220/gallon...) you really want to work with 3 coats of FINISH. A sealant coat can be used...but the TOUGH stuff is the finish = the expensive part = 3 coats to get you a commercial grade finish....See MoreLooking for the best rug to use in my kitchen with new hardwood floors
Comments (13)Wendy, Your kitchen would look great with a runner or more of that full room look. For the full room you may have to put 2 together to make the full length of you kitchen. Wasn't sure the other colors and style you are looking for but some examples below. the blue full room one not shown in the room is an example of one you can do that doesn't have a border so 2 together can look seem less as one rug. You can sew or use carpet tape to keep them together. lots of other patterns colors and styles you van do this with just as long as it looks seem less from one to the other. You will probably have to trimmed off the adjoining ends to put them together. If rugs.com has the right sizing to the picture, a 4'11x 6 would be about perfect to double but you should measure to confirm....See MoreNothing Left to Say
