Seeking help with vintage style baths & vanities
Comments (21)I've been planning a vintage bath remodel in my ca1888 house for what seems like forever (I am FINALLY ready to pull the trigger). I'm going for something kind of deco and a little more contrasty than most though. The walls will be partially tiled in white subway with a black 1/2" liner, a 3x8 embossed tile and topped by a black wainscot cap. I haven't decided what the baseboard will be but either a 4x4 cove base topped by a half inch white liner and then another half inch black liner OR a flat 6x6 topped with a half inch black liner. The floors will be matte glazed porcelain hex, white with some black dots. My shower base is corian but with a terrazzo look in greys and whites. The grout will be grey. I have black porcelain turtle shade sconces (now discontinued at rejuvenation, I got them on clearance, but they have a similar style still available) and probably will also have a black porcelain overhead light. I will have two sinks that are adjacent to each other - one will be a slab supported by chrome legs with exposed sink and piping and the other will be a vanity, the cartwright small single sink from restoration hardware. Matching restoration hardware mirrors. The vanity tops will be matching 1 1/4" slabs of honed jet mist granite from a local granite shop. Here are a couple of elevation sketches I did, this one showing the most likely base idea with the console sink and the other showing the vanity sink but without any kind of a base. I will also have a new clawfoot tub (sorry to see the old one go but the crappy chipping refinish job has pretty much ruined it for me, I want something that will last a lifetime) that is double-ended with a center mount faucet, chrome feet and that is painted black on the outside (but normal white porcelain on the inside). The toilet is the toto guinevere, still in my garage, and the faucets are rohl country C-spout. I'm also replacing the radiator with a myson hydronic towel warmer that has kind of a funky vintagey look. Now I just need to get started. Reminds me I have to call the contractor :)....See MoreUpdating 2nd/hall bath in condo - suggestions needed
Comments (3)On the opposite side of that wall is the closet in the 2nd bedroom. I could easily cut the wall and drop in an access panel. That is more plumbing work than I feel comfortable doing myself. I like to experiment and learn to do things on my own. But since when I shut off the water supply, I shut off eight units in total, I don't want this to be a learning experience that inconveniences my neighbors for a long time. If I do that, it can wait until I do a complete remodel in my master bath and have a plumber here. I've got that planned for another year or two. Thanks for the tip though writersblock!!! And trtsmb, I do agree with doing a linen closet or hutch with a smaller vanity. But I need suggestions or pics for ideas. I'm not sure exactly what....See More60" double vanity- what to do with mirrors and lighting
Comments (49)i don't think they come in doubles, I am having no luck trying to paste the picture, it is similar to the dark vanity's sconces above, they are long and tubular. I will have to graph it out. Actually I think I will have to wait, because I have no idea where the bowls of the sink lie on this granite top. Ok, think I have solved my dilemma, I really need to wait for the granite top, not knowing the sink placement, and having one wall abutting the vanity. Then I shall attack it with graph paper....See MoreIs a medicine cabinet necessary in hall bath?
Comments (52)Ceezeecz, the Hudson that Mayflower posted also has decorative molding n the sides that should take care of your problem with the drawers hitting the door molding when you try to open them if you have them on the left. Putting drawers on the left would let you have a wider vanity, wouldn't it? Another option that I don't think I have seen you consider for your vanity area are the new slimmer vanities. They go down to 18" deep now. Signature Hardware sent me an email that they just got a bunch in, since I was looking for that size. Here is one that is 48" wide, Wenge wood, and 18" deep. They have three pages of 18" vanities to look at here:Signature Hardware 18" deep vanities I ended up getting an actual lady's vanity, though. I needed the kneehole in case I ever need a wheelchair. Cindywhitall, I don't understand why a filler panel would necessarily take up 6". They may sell it that size, but anyone who can cut a straight cut (someone with more skills than me, that is!) can cut them down to the needed size, right? If you had 9" of space, you could put in a drawer or a skinny pull-out, and that is why the filler panel is 6". The cabinet industry does everything in 3" intervals. Sometimes, a filler of only an inch or so is needed to allow clearance for a drawer to open next to the wall with a door molding in front of it, or for a door to swing right when the cabinet is at an angle to the one next to it....See MoreSofia Akhter
