Ah, but notice the fresh straw she is dragging in the house on her coat. She has a cozy house of her own that all the straw comes from. I personally love the smell of fresh straw, you think she would too. LOL

I read something years ago that said to use alfalfa straw. It doesn't hold moisture or stick to the dog like reg. straw does. It also said never to use blankets, they really hold moisture and damp bedding is bad for pet.

What is alfalfa straw? The only alfalfa I've ever seen is the $$$ stuff used to feed horses and cows. Oat straw is the preferred straw here.

That's good info about using blankets . I left some heavy towels on our enclosed porch last summer and was surprised how damp they felt when I brought them in last week. Porch is dry but gets very cold.

I was just thinking the same thing lov_mkitchen. I have never heard of alfalfa straw. Emma, someone has given you the wrong information. Alfalfa is hay, and every part of it that grows above ground gets used for that. I could throw some in the dog house but DH would have a freaking fit at $140 a ton, even if it was only one little cake.

I do agree with the blanket thing. It gets damp and cold. Even those cute dog beds are bad for outside, same thing, gets too damp. So lots and lots of straw is all Kobi gets in her doghouse.

Years ago, my ex-hubby and I had a neighbour who chained his dog outside year-round. His bowl of water was a block of ice, and little food. It broke my heart and I bought a bale of straw for him and we put it in his doghouse. There was nothing in his little doghouse for him to lay on or keep warm. He was so happy, jumping around in the straw. I asked the owner if I could take him for walks, and he let us a couple of times, then wouldn't anymore because we were being "too kind" to the dog. We didn't see the dog after a while, so I think he was killed. Just my thoughts though.

Jasdip, that story breaks my heart. I can't stand it when animals are abused like that. Big dogs need lots of space to run, and need warm places to sleep, fresh food and water. The jerk should have been reported to the SPCA.

Emma, I stand corrected on the Alfalfa Straw. We cut and cure our hay and bale the entire plant for feed. However, alfalfa seed producers actually wait until the plant matures to seed, and then combine it like any other seed crop. The straw is baled afterward and sold just as that, straw. So your information is correct.
