I'm Dreaming Of A White....Kitchen

It's actually P&F Buttercream, but close enough. There are still details to be tweaked but I thought it would be a fun time to post.

I began with a shot of our home because my primary goals were to create a well-functioning kitchen that would be a welcoming gathering space for family and have it suit the house, which is a New Englander in NH nestled in a woodsy setting. From its inaugural trial hosting Thanksgiving, I know it meets the first criteria. With all the light shining through the new window and sliders and the private views we now enjoy, I think it meets the second, as well.

In our open main floor plan the kitchen is in the sight line of all the rooms except for the front area of the LR, so I've included pics from those spaces so you can see how it all comes together.

I am grateful to each and every one of you who helped me throughout the remodel this past year. I will go through my files and post details/sources for those who might be interested as soon as I can.

a. the tall skinnny evergreen might be sky pencil holly b. salvia greggii & knockouts (already mentioned) are perfect, i think, for those areas - both are relatively zero-maintenance - you'd only have to "climb up there" once a year c. i agree with the comment that the stonework/concrete will increase the ambient heat - native & drought-tolerant is the way to go if you want low-maintenance d. i've got some purple heart, if you want some - they do spread, but not in an invasive way - they're native to mexico & can handle the heat e. there's someone on our forum who describes their style as "native texas cottage" or something similar - who is that? not exactly an english garden counterpart, but similar - is it the orderly, geometric, trimmed "english garden" that you like, or the overflowing, miss marple "english garden" that you prefer? - that would help us make texas-friendly suggestions f. your structure would look wonderful with a local native flowering vine - have you already told us what part of texas? - that would also go a long way in lowering the ambient temp

Thank you all for the very nice hugs and thoughtful responses :) I was feeling a little sorry for myself yesterday, mainly because we found a place that might work, but we can't seem to get anyone to show it to us! The owner is out of the country and the other property we like has renters, who can't seem to move out. I'm sure we'll get to see them by the end of the month...but meanwhile, snow is coming and I have horses to move! So, this is the house I would love to get. It's in a small town and across from some property with barns...and a small house, we could use for our home office. It probably needs some work, but it's on city water and sewer (you appreciate the little things, after living in the country LOL) but also has a well for watering the garden. I'll let you know how things go...but I just REALLY want to know if this is going to work out. I am so tired of dealing with this entire thing and just want to fix up a house, move in and get on with our lives! But, then I remind myself how lucky I am to have a place to live, while we are waiting, a husband I love (and best friend) who is getting better every day...and still have my horses, kitties and garden. We should be able to keep it all, with some creative relocation and a bit of luck :) Oh, here's the house...I really want to see the inside, but peeking in the windows, it seems like a great fit for us! How do you use the kitchen? Are you good about keeping everything off the counters that might stain or etch? I'm not, but a compromise might be to put marble on the island. Less chance that dishes will get left overnight or raspberry jam ends up under the toaster :) What about a darker wood island with a marble top? If you plan to have seating that would take care of little feet bumping against the island...and it would really set off the marble! For perimeters, maybe the darker gray with the white cabinets (so you don't look like you ran out of marble and tried to match it). As for the backsplash... consider whether you need something durable, behind the range. You might want to add marble subway tiles around the sink or do something different for the entire backsplash. Just a few ideas...

DH pulled snow down from the roof this week here in St. Paul. We have a mound almost as high as the rain gutter on the one-story part of the house--we can view it from backside through the newly installed bathroom replacement window. The room is dark whether it's day or night. They say we haven't had this snowy a December since 1969. This is the snow memory of my childhood. DH has foregone work on the house because he's been plowing neighborhood driveways. Meanwhile, my children in Alaska have written about all the cold they've had--cars and computers just give up, house heaters quit, etc. etc. etc. Still haven't unpacked much of the Christmas stuff, etc. but we're using the new kitchen and trying it out in new situations, but can't schedule a full 10-on-the-Richter-Scale Christmas dinner yet and have only experimented with new convection oven twice. Will have 10 for dinner tomorrow, pot luck style, with improvised decor. Macybaby, you'll have your kitchen soon enough to be actually ready for Christmas 2011, I suspect. Perhaps you will entice your kids to join you. And I'll join you from a distance, I sure hope. Thanks for posting. Have fun paintin' the castle!

A Christmas reveal, how festive! I love your kitchen, well, your whole house actually. Warm and welcoming is just how I would describe it! Nice job! Quick question; how wide is your coffee area with glass doors to the left of your refrigerator and pantry? I'm thinking of a similar space and I don't know if I want to go narrower than 30ish inches. Thanks, and enjoy Christmas baking and cooking in your new kitchen!

So beautiful! What a serene, lovely space! I also love your Christmas decorations in the kitchen--especially the fat little birdies! The pendant lights are just perfect, and I love the lit display cabinet. You did a great job making the space integrated and matching the feel of the house. (Also, your dogs are TOO cute! And what a tree!)

Ohmygoodness! Can I come over and be in your house for awhile? Beautiful and picture perfect. I just love that little Chrismas tree cabinet. What did you use for lighting inside? It is all good and I envy your "doneness" for the holidays. Enjoy, enjoy enjoy!

Thank you for all the nice comments. I want to organize before listing all details, but I will tell those who asked that the wooly birds in winter garb are from Target. I fell hard for them as soon as I spotted the red plaid and grey herringbone. They were on sale for $4.00 each last week. They make me smile whenever I walk in the room.

And for Hydragea, my wall color is BM Carrington Beige throughout the main floor, except for thr DR which is BM Philadelphia Cream. Trim is BM Simply White.

WOW!!! I love it! What a great kitchen, and living room, and trees, and dogs and fat little birdies! The alcove with the loveseat next to the kitchen is perfect to grab a seat while waiting for the timer to go off. You must be so pleased; it's perfect!

Seeing the snow laden roof tops it just seems it's a fairy world. So beautiful and serene. Moreover the interiors particularly the Christmas tree is really captivating.

Love your poodles!! I bet they love that fireplace. The kitchen is wonderful too. I like how you shaped the island to include the microwave and work with the corner stove. The tape seat stools look comfortable and really work with the rest of your home.

nancyjwb, I scanned through earlier posts and saw I never responded to your question about the width of the coffee station. From the wall to the adjacent pantry cab it measures 25 1/2".

I just love having that little set-up away from the cooking zone. We had house guests for 2 wks. over the holidays and they were able to access the fridge & serve themselves coffee or tea yet never get into my workspace while I prepared breakfast. My coffee mugs, Insulated Bodum glasses, cream/sugar bowls are right above the coffee machine (which also dispenses hot water for tea). The top drawer keeps the K-cups & coffee pods organized & handy. I'm a tea lover & the 2nd drawer offers easy access to my collection. When I used to have them stacked in my old cabinets, no one ventured beyond the first row of boxes.

Then there's more storage in the 3rd drawer...my point is we have been very happy with how we've been able to use that relatively small cab area.

I'm so attracted by the combination of the color and pattern of your granite, the color and pattern of the shaker tape seats, and your Dash and Albert rug. They all work together so beautifully.

I think your reveal photos all look like they were clipped from the pages of a magazine (including the first one of your house exterior.) So nicely done!

Love the whole interior and exterior. The pastel colored exterior is so beautiful in the winter photo. Looks like a great space for entertaining.
