Comments (3)I know that petunias are very cold hardy and I think that heliotrope might be, too. I don't have the experience with the latter. Petunias can take frosts and even light freezes, making them quite popular in warmer climates for late fall and winter plantings. However, both will be quite unhappy inside. You cannot duplicate the outdoor sunlight and humidity that these plants require...at least not without some effort and a few purchases. Both of these plants perform best in the category of 'perennials used AS annuals' because they lose so much vigor by the end of their flowering months and because they are quite inexpensive to purchase as brand new youngsters in the spring. Ken lists, very well, some of the other challenges that you would face. BUT, I agree that nothing beats first hand experience when it comes to gardening endeavors. "Give it a try." You might nurse your plants through the winter and be well pleased if they make it! If you have small children and pets, please do some careful research about heliotrope, in particular. If you decide to give it a go, as ken puts it, let us know and we might be able to go into more detail about some steps you can take to swing the odds in your favor....See MoreMy Annual Winter Window Garden
Comments (15)Well, I do what is best prescribed: sun and fertilizer over summer - they go outdoors - then indoors at the end of the summer, into the basement and I take leaves off as they fade. In the early days of my "mania" I did none of this, and for sure, since then I have been more mindful, and I do have more reblooms. Maybe I should just discard the really old bulbs, and maintain properly the recent ones. But, one year I was shocked to see a rather old bulb, quite small in size, produce a most exquisite scape with many blooms. Anyway - it is fun, and I like surprises - nothing like seeing that little "nose" emerging :) And one year, an old San Remo, which had produced 3 offsets over a 2 or 3 years, finally bloomed with the offsets as well - now THAT was pure joy!...See MoreNeed a hand cream for age spots
Comments (24)Do all of the lighteners contain a form of retinol? I have a problem with it being too harsh for my fair skin. One of my favorite products for years was Neutrogena's Daily Facial Lotion with SPF. Used it for years. One morning I opened a new bottle, applied per usual, and by the next morning I looked like I had spent the previous day sitting in the sun without sunscreen. Wouldn't have been so bad, but it was Christmas morning and I wasn't in a tropical area. LOL It took 3 or 4 days for the redness to go away. MIL swears to stick with it that my reaction was a common one, especially not ever having used retinol products. Sorta of no pain no gain. I keep reminding myself that MIL has used prescription strength retinol to rid herself of facial wrinkles. Her face looked like raw meat for so long. I didn't see any difference in her wrinkles despite her use of the retinol and who knows what other prescription products. Well, I'll go with the no pain. Not trying to rid my well earned facial lines, just want to moisturize my face! Are there skin lightening products out there for those who can't tolerate the retinol??...See MoreHand Lotion OR Hand Cream
Comments (29)I've used straight olive oil on my skin for years. It's the only thing I've ever used that really kills the winter itch. I have psoriasis, which really complicates things. A couple of years ago my doctor commented that my skin was looking at lot better and I told him about the olive oil. He was a little amused until I made my case -- all natural, full of fatty acids and esters that the skin just loves, penetrates into the skin, doesn't just lay on top of it, and the proof of all of this was, well, my skin. He now recommends that all of his patients with dry skin use olive oil....See Morekris_zone6
