I took cuttings from my basil last fall and rooted them in water. Planted them in pots sometime in November I think. By March they were really straggly looking and I ended up throwing them out. They were in a south facing window, but I don't think it was enough light for them. Not sure.

Maybe you'll have better luck than me.

Dill is so easy to start from seed. In fact, next spring you'll probably have sprouts all over if you let it go to seed this fall.

Herbs can be cut back and potted up for winter. Many languish indoors because of dim light and warm dry conditions.
Sweet potato vine and four o'clock tubers can be stored in peat or similar mostly dry medium over the winter in a cool, frost-free location. The sweet potato vine may or may not form tubers; cuttings can be grown on a windowsill.

I have found the best way to keep basil is to grow it in water. I've read in several places that to keep basil fresh, you should put it in a clear glass of water, put a plastic bag over it, (don't tie it closed) and keep it in the frig. Tried it and the stems rooted in the water in the frig. I also keep stems in water on my kitchen window sill. Keeps for weeks that way, roots and grows great. have never had luck with it in soil over winter. don't think I get enough sun in the winter.
