stocking up for cold weather

I guess I can't ignore the falling temperatures any longer!

What are some of the things you always try to stock up on for the season? Firelogs? Freeze-batching soup? Another shovel? Your Netflix library? (LOL!)

And what did you kick yourself for last winter when you realized you forgot to get?

We don't get a big freeze here but for us it's cold. I stock up on my pantry items that I use in soups and slowcooker meals. I have to cover the plants in the atrium or move some inside. And get all the fallen leaves out of the atrium so the drains are not covered by them.
I always have a ton of books on my tablets.

Actually, I used the stock tank heater one time two years ago. I got some freezing rain after two feet of snow and then a deep freeze. The pond was covered with icy snow that was too hard to shovel. I was able to melt through the ice/snow in about an hour. Then my bubbler took over and I put the heater back in the box. I agree that a device using 1500 watts is very expensive to operate. The thing is, you only use it to open the hole. An inch of ice would probably take 5 minutes to melt through. I have a remote control for my outdoor Christmas decorations and I would use it with the heater if necessary. I also get a lot of birds drinking from my pond this time of year. They have it ruff when most of their water supply is below a layer of ice. I worry about the other animals who visit my pond. The bubbles keeps the ice very thin around the hole and I'm always afraid I'm going to find a dead squirrel or cat when the ice thaws.

Sorry if I wasnt clear. I spread seed in March and most of it came up in the spring. Then I pulled it all before summer and put in other plants. Then in the middle of the hottest part of summer, this little guy started growing. So I sowed it months before but it is a sort of quasi-volunteer. I'm interested in saving seed from this plant because i'm drawn to the idea of a "fall kale" that would germinate and grow better in the hot parts of summer so I could have bumper crops going in the fall. I have been trying to figure out if kale will overwinter and I cant find a lot of reliable advice. I'm in z5 northern Indiana. How do I overwinter it? Just put a cloche on top? trim the leaves down first?

I love Matelasse, I have several coverlets and bedspreads in various colors and prints of Matelasse. I will add a light weight fleece blanket in the winter. I don't like a lot of covers, I generally am not under the covers much. I will have the cleaning lady take the blanket off this week. Might change to a new pretty summery print Matelasse I bought but have never used yet. I currently have my favorite one which is raspberry color on the bed. I find one of those with the sheets is just right, I prefer a very cool room. The ceiling fan is on high all year, plus I have a 10" fan that is aimed at my head on all the time, we have a good size metal antique style fan on a stand that I have on a fair amount of time. I must have lots of air movement on me, my Dad was the same way. I feel like I can't breathe if I don't. I really think that we could have gone with out the blanket this winter since it never got very cold.

When I had a cat I stocked up on cat food and litter, same for dog food. I used to stock up on pantry items in the winter because I don't drive and most of the time walked to the grocery store 4 blocks away unless I went shopping with someone else which wasn't always a guarantee. Roads and sidewalks can be bad with ice during our winters with the thaw and freeze cycle every day and I already broke my knee once falling on ice so stocking up was the better option for me. 2 years ago I started stocking up again for winter then realized I didn't have to do that any longer since my brother who moved in works at a grocery store and can bring home whatever I need.

We've been known to lose power any time of year, so I always have flashlights, etc. Plus I heat mostly with wood, so that's in place.

Two things I want to make sure I don't run out of are cat litter and cat food. I keep some of the cat litter in my vehicle, where it might come in handy.

We had serious ice here last night. Wet ice is the worst; even studded tires don't help. You just slide off in any direction. Which is what happened to some people I know before the cinder truck came through last evening. I'd elected to stay home. Today it's raining hard, and the temperature is well above freezing, but the trees still have ice on the branches.

My freezer is chock full with soups, chili and meat loafs right now. Comes in handy. Just invited some friends over for next Friday night just for a bowl of soup and some crusty bread because we're going to go to a Christmas program at 7:30. I'm having a breakfast for my golf group that morning so it's great, I'll just grab a couple of packs of soup out of the freezer. Even gave them a choice of what kind of soup. Love cold weather cooking.

I have enough cat food, dog food, horse feed, chicken feed and people food to last until April. There will be days that I could venture to town but not if I don't have to. Since our power station has been upgraded I haven't been keeping gas for the generator on hand. If I have to I can siphon it out of the truck but I haven't needed it for a few years. I always have batteries and I keep the laptop charged all the time. I have an LP stove so I can eat warm food! Since I retired I don't care what it does except I'd rather not have ice. I can hold on to the fence all the way from the house to the barns if need be.

Just mostly worry about pet food and chicken feed. Pantry is overflowing and so is my freezer.

Here in Southern California I guess I don't stock up on anything. I do freeze cranberries to last during the whole year for roast chicken, and I stock up on glaced cherries for spritz cookie press cookies all year for my younger son.

I'm in Colorado, we can have bad weather, not too often though....but my main concern is to always have our meds filled and other meds on hand in case of colds, flu, etc. if we are too sick to get out.
