Christmas sewing...

Is anyone else sewing Christmas gifts? I'm only doing one.... a quilted fabric Christ.as card for a dear sweet sewing friend.... we met online back in January because we happen to own the same model Bernina... since then we written virtually daily novels about sewing and machines... such rich and fulfilling conversations, I wanted to do something to express my gratitude... my friend's gift is being made with the embroidery thread, needles, scissors, and Wonder Clips that she has gifted me with over the past year, so fun!

What about you, any Christmas sewing?

What a nice gesture!

I've recently finished a baby quilt, and hopefully will get pajama bottoms done for the kids before Christmas Eve. But that's it.

Over the years, I've eliminated all the stress by not doing anything for anyone. It's made the season so much more enjoyable overall.

Me-me-me! Glutton for punishment & stress!
I have the corners on 2 large quilts to tack down....then wash, dry and wrap. I'll be holding my breath that one of these does not bleed & the label I printed on the photo paper washes nicely.
I am also waiting for a baby to be born to finish the binding & label on a baby quilt. If he doesn't pop out soon, I'll add the label later. All three of these quilts are going to be huge surprises for the recipients.
Bobby, your gift is sweet and I'm sure she will love it.

When I posted my December goals on Nov 30th I said I didn't think I would be able to get to any sewing until the 18th and that worked out to be just about right. It turned out to be the 19th, but who's counting, right? On Saturday I shoved all the holiday storage boxes away that were stacked around and on my sewing table, sorted through the stacks of fabrics that I had pushed aside during Christmas decorating time and got to work. I did 2 birthday blocks due in January and 3 January lotto blocks too. I searched through books and fabric until I developed the perfect border plan for the last Round Robin quilt; although I won't get to work on that until after Christmas. After not touching fabric for a couple weeks it was pure bliss to get back to it and have a couple days to myself. DH was out Christmas shopping so it was just me, the dog, the cats and holiday cooking shows on the TV. A perfect sewing weekend! Kate

Wow, Diana, you've got some great ideas in your photos. I especially like the clear box frames for holding small items - and I happen to have some of them available. My sewing room is medium size and crammed full! My house is old and so on the outside wall overlooking the backyard, I have two large windows butted up against each other with a built-in glass front shelf unit on each end of the window area. These built-in glass door shelves hold most of my fabric, one side for quilting and the other side for fashion sewing but the quilt stash has spilled over here too. My large, heavy folding table sits in the area directly in front of the windows. This table holds my Viking Quilt Designer and my Brother serger. At the table to the right of my desk chair on wheels, I have a set of plastic, rolling drawers (from Office Depot) and a trash can. On the left wall is a book case for books, magazines, mailing envelopes (love those swaps!), etc. To the right of this bookcase is an old oak sewing machine cabinet that actually belongs to my sister. On top of this is a portable radio/CD player and stacks of CDs. On the right wall is my design wall made with flannel backed vinyl tablecloth fabric from Wal-mart hung with saftey pins and nails in the wall. Just in front of the design wall is my ironing board, which stays up all the time. On the wall behind me as I sit at my sewing table is the door to the bedroom and a large 3 ft. by 5 ft. cutting table. This was a solid door I got for $10 dollars and friends helped me put saw horse legs on it. Under the table I have a plastic drawer unit to hold interfacing, fusible web, my collection of kitchen towel fabric, and works in progress. I also have a number of plastic, lidded, shoebox type storage boxes for more quilt fabric stash and works in progress (doesn't that sound better than UFOs?). There is another trash can at the cutting table, a ruler holder sits on top of the cutting table, and there are hooks for tape measures and rotarty cutters just under the cutting table. Computer paper boxes under the table hold my clothing patterns. There is a small closet in the room where I store bolts of curtain fabric, heavy white duck cloth, and freebie fabrics I can get where I work. But the closet has a window in it so I have to be careful what I store in there because of the light fading issue. As I type this, I'm thinking "what a neat and tidy room." But that is not the case because I have stacks of fabric in bags, various tote bags and wheeled totes, machine covers, and stacks of just plain "stuff" everywhere. Hey, I'm creative - I don't have to be tidy too! LOL! Here is a photo of my cutting table with storage underneath. This never looks as tidy as it is in this picture - LOL!

I love going to bazaars, Theresa. Let us know what all they had for sale. Donna, I think once you put your mind to do your project, it probably won't take long. Larri, Eight Tuesdays??? YIKES! Rita, Inspiration comes at the most unexpected times so be ready. :-) Bev, You have quite a list going there. Did you get pillowcases made for your DD? I have one heart block made and another block that was requested for a comfort quilt. In fact, I was able to use an orphan block I had and turned it into a square in a square to get the proper size. Yea me......one more orphan block used. I also was able to move the ear from over the nose of the dog to it's proper spot and am ready to get going on that again. That unstitching wasn't fun at all.

Hi, Bobby! What a nice gift you're making for your friend.

I am with Jen...I used to make gifts for everyone - extended family, co-workers, friends - then I realized I was spending 6 months a year making Christmas gifts! :O The "kids" in DH's family draw names (3 couples and one adult niece) so I often make something for that one person, but in general we don't do any gifting any more. Everyone has so much stuff. Even DH & I don't exchange gifts. We usually get something we both need or want.

Not much Christmas sewing here either. Hadn't planned on doing any and then made a fabric box and they were so easy and fun made 3 more and decided to give them with a bag of Muddy Buddies to the grandgirls. lol

No Christmas quilting for me this year either. I did have a wedding quilt to do for my niece's 1-3-15 wedding. That's finished and wrapped. It's the cookies that kept me busy, but I finished yesterday. I make about 100 each of nine recipes. I packaged up five boxes to mail and will take them to the post office tomorrow morning. Now I just need gifts for my two grandkids.

I started with our church bazaar and it as ballooned from there. I have one more left to do. I have made 40 kids aprons, 7 adult aprons, 3 baby/mom aprons, baby blankets and burb cloths. My final thng is a tutu for a 4 year old.

The quilted Christmas card is darling!!! I've made five (yes FIVE!!) baby/crib quilts this fall but only one hand-made Christmas gift...it's the patchy scotty dog that will reach its destination in Illinois tomorrow. I'm still sewing 'Christmas' but these table toppers are for two of my sisters and will be given to them next time I see them as un-Christmas gifts. Maybe I'll be able to get the last lotto block of 2014 done, too - am hoping..fabric is washed and ready but don't know if time will allow. I love sewing with Christmas fabrics ...makes the house completely 'decorated'!! *smile*

I'm glad some of you are also doing Christmas sewing, too! If we do it out of obligation and the gift won't be appreciated, it's not quite as much fun, so limiting it is probably a good idea! Wow, Marsha, you really are a glutton for punishment, huh?

Donna, my family does the name drawing thing too.... I'm not participating, though... we're doing Christmas on Saturday and with me working two jobs and trying to get this card finished, it will be all I can do to bring food to contribute to the pot luck.... I will probably have to skip sleep on Friday to cook... besides, I just got a newer car with a payment, so I definitely don't need to be wasting money on presents... definitely no more sewing machines in my near future!

I don't really decorate for Christmas, so this is about as festive as I get. I get so many Christmas cards where people just buy something at the store and simply write their name in them... if someone knows me well enough to send me a Christmas card, we can safely assume that I already know how to spell their name... I think it should be at least a little more personal than that! Doing that, to me, is like making a cake from a mix instead of from scratch... it's OK if it works for other people, but I can't do it!

I really worked hard to do the blanket stitch perfectly on this and I am enjoying using my machine's decorative stitches as well... Of course I need a lot more practice with free motion writing, but the goofs will just add to the "rustic charm" of this thing... the back is going to be made of pieced Christmas fabrics, and all I have left to do after that is assemble and quilt... based on her reaction to things I've already made for her, I'm expecting this to knock her socks off.... she either has low standards or is really polite :o)
