What's for your New Years Dinner?

We just finished eating pork chops and sauerkraut. Boiled sweet and white potatoes, and green beans.

The pork and sauerkraut are for good luck!

I just finished having pork, sauerkraut, and mashed potatoes. Had a slice of Rhodes 'Homemade" whole wheat bread.

My sister Annie who lives in the Home doesn't like sauerkraut. I guessed correctly that was what they had for lunch. I wanted some Halos from the local store so visited their hot foods deli and picked her up a chicken leg. She was a happy camper to see it.... one of her favorite things.

Another beautiful, sunny day here in Ohio, but oh so cold/breezy.

I'm going to make an oyster stew, inspired by someone in our dinner thread the other day. Thank you, whoever you are, lol. Shopped for the ingredients today, after our lunch of Hoppin' John and collards.

Ann, the lobster looks great! Fun tradition for NYE. Funny how we want what we don't have locally. We frequently mail order King Crab for NYE. You eat quite a bit of seafood. Do you and Moe fish or go crabbing/clamming? It's a fun hobby and the reward is, of course, dinner. DH fishes several times/month during the season and we go crabbing or dig for clams when the mood for linguini or chowder strikes. Once a year, usually in late July or early August, he goes tuna fishing for a week. DH also has a personal use lobster license. It allows him to maintain up to ten pots for $120/year. We never have ten pots in the water at once though 'cause he doesn't want to maintain that many and it's too much lobster for two people. Also, he's a fair weather lobsterman. (chuckle) If the long-term weather forecast looks rough - he'll pull the pots. If we do have extra we take them to our fishmonger and trade for whatever looks good. We have a Nordic Tug and a little lobster boat but that's not really necessary. There's always guys at the docks, at least here, looking for extra people to go fishing with them to help share the fuel costs. Anyway, just wondering if you fish? Here, frequently people that love seafood eventually want to drop a line in the water. The lure of the lobster pot is why we got Whiskey River, our first boat (a little 22' sport lobster). Your dinner looks fantastic! DH hasn't had any pots in the water since Sandy. We've got our hands full without going out to check pots that we can't even cook the catch. :( /tricia

Ours was utterly quiet, although not unpleasant :). Both kids were off doing their own NYE celebration so the house was nice and calm. We ate dinner, chatted, then he went to sleep early and I read for awhile. Boring? Maybe but also a moment to cherish being secure in our lives and with so much for which to be grateful. Angelaid, I love potato pancakes but I would say that is is my favourite version. There is no secret to making these pancakes. I've made them with mashed potatoes that I made specifically for making these pancakes and I've also made extra mashed potatoes for dinner and saved the leftovers for these pancakes. When I make them with the leftover mashed potatoes there is also butter in the mix. This is not a stiff or thick batter. I use a 1/4 cup measuring cup to scoop up the batter. Mere Blanc's Potato Pancakes From:www.thedailyspud.com with very minor changes. 2 small baking potatoes 1/4 cup milk 1/3 cup All-Purpose flour 2 eggs, separated 1-1/2 tablespoons heavy cream Pinch of salt Pepper Fresh chives (or green onions) Butter for frying Cook potatoes until tender Mash with a little milk. Let potatoes cool before adding the remaining milk, cream, flour, egg yolks, salt, pepper and chives. Beat Egg Whites until stiff. Fold into potato mixture. Do not over mix. This is a light but thick batter. Heat a griddle or skillet. ( I used a rectangle electric frying pan) . Brush with butter. Using a 1/4 cup measuring cup drop batter on to griddle. New Years Day is always prime rib for us, au jus, baked potato, salad or vegetable. I don't invite anyone, plan it just for the two of us, but if someone stops by that's OK too. We keep New Year's Eve quiet the last few years, the bigger parties don't appeal to me any more - we rarely stay up to ring in the new year:) We went to the same party year after year, now looking back I can't think why. Lots of our friends always there, at a private club, there would be music, dancing, lots of drinks and only nuts, chips for food. No other food with all those drinks, and somehow it became fight night, someone in our group always had a major end of year blowout, not always the same couple. Probably tired, stress, too much alcohol - it stopped being fun and we stopped going. I understand they've added a buffet in recent years, we still don't go.

We had our usual baked ham because the grandsons love it. We are away visiting where it is just cold while home is experiencing a snow storm.

We try to have a quiet prime rib dinner at home, just the two of us, but that didn't work this year. It feels like we've done nothing but eat for the last few weeks, and heavy meals. Company has been coming and going all day, a little while ago 4 of us ran out to the beach and dug clams - it was bright, sunny, and barely 40F out there. I'm not planning to cook clams tonight either ;)

Maybe ham sandwiches from Tuesday's leftovers? I'm not sure yet. We'll see if the roast sounds better Sunday. I have it, but put it in the freezer.

We just finished. I put sauerkraut and sausage in the crockpot. DH loves it. I don't like sauerkraut, and the sausage that we could get had garlic in it that I can't have, so I had fried cabbage and ham, we both had mashed potatoes and green beans.

Shirley, does Annie like cabbage in any form? It sure has been cold in Ohio! And really windy here.

My DS and DGS came to help DH take down the outside decorations. I really wasn't ready for the tree to come down yet inside, but it's so much easier to do with the extra help, so we did that while they were here. Our tree is a 7' tall with a box to match, and is stored in the basement. So much easier to bring up and take back down with 2 full grown men! Or even with a 6' 14 year old! It seems so blah in here now. I still have the 4' fiber optic tree in the kitchen, so I may bring that in here.

I have been taking down decorations all day with lots of resting and crocheting in between. We pick up the grandsons (5 and 8) tomorrow for a week with us while their parents go on a vacation to Barbados.

I may not get all the decorations put away, but at least the tree is done. I can work on putting the rest away while they are here, but I wanted the delicate glass ornaments to be packed away by me with no helpers.

Our neighborhood won the community spirit award for lighting up everything in sight. Those decorations have to stay up till tomorrow according to contest rules. The younger menfolk strung wires across the street from house to house and then strung them with strings of lights which blink to the beat of the music. They really get into it.

Tami: No cabbage at all. It gives her an upset stomach. I don't think she even eats cole slaw.

I cooked a big meal for us and our neighbors. A huge oven roasted brisket, rice and gravy, Black eyes, cabbage, potatoes and onions and sausage with cheese, green and yellow wax beans and a big mixed berry cobbler.
We were working on it all day and I am dead tired now but it was all very good and much enjoyed.

I have not bought a big brisket in a while. We used to get those big packer untrimmed briskets for 99c a lb all the time. Well they must be made of gold now because the cheapest one I could find was $50.00. I just couldn't believe it but my sister said she paid $75.00 for the one she cooked for Christmas. That's crazy when you have to cut at least half of the weight off because it's thick heavy fat. I had a grocery sack full of fat we trimmed off of it,several pounds. At $4-5 a pound that hurts to throw it in the trash! I guarantee you none of the brisket will be wasted. I am going to freeze it and make sure I find recipes for it. It makes great sandwiches.

So that's what we had and now I want to go to bed.

Since we are not home today...We had our pork and greens last night.
Today we met Kian's inlaws and we had a meal prepared by our daughter in law and her mother.

DS, his SO and his dog arrived last night. We had a loin of pork, Bavarian sauerkraut, oven roasted potatoes, creamed spinach, homemade applesauce and pretzel rolls. I forgot to make bread the night before. So glad I had a few rolls in the freezer. The dough is rising for tonight.

We had our traditional New Year's Day meal--corned beef and cabbage (with potatoes and carrots); black-eyed peas; greens; and cornbread.

So we should have good fortune and not go hungry in 2015!!

Turkey stew. It's all I wanted. It was down in the 20s, and tomorrow will be in the 60s. What was that Glenda posted about weather in the south? Yep!

I had sliced ham on mini croissants for a late lunch New Years day so wasn't hungry for dinner and my sister is not feeling well so she made herself scrambled eggs and toast. I had a handful of bbq chips (haven't had potato chips in a long time) later in the evening while watching tv and then we cut into the fruitcake I made and each had a piece. I had planned on baking some chicken breasts but that will be for dinner tonight instead
