What's for dinner New Year's Eve?

We are noshing tonight. I bought a round of Brie and will warm it until it's a little gooey and have it with grapes and sliced pears and apples. Also a feta/spinach pizza (Publix) cut into squares.

Later we'll crack open the Bailey's and maybe have some peppermint truffles.

I sure hope I can stay awake until midnight!!!

How about you? Staying in, going out?? Whatever you are doing, I wish you all the happiest New Year!!

NOTHING, period!!!!!

Refrigerator has been cleaned of all tempting foods, and sent off to go to hunting club with son and gs.

I'm tired of eating!

LOL..sounds like we are all VERY similar in the way we choose to celebrate. Since I love the solitude of the garden and talking to flowers - I despise large crowds. We have always chosen to stay home and celebrate quietly. Leftovers for us too -- watched a movie and then scanned through all of the New Years Eve shows - stopping when something caught our attention. We live in the country so even though fireworks are illegal in GA - you can always step out either door and see a nice show. Dogs hate it but we enjoy our celebration Shelly

Ann, the lobster looks great! Fun tradition for NYE. Funny how we want what we don't have locally. We frequently mail order King Crab for NYE. You eat quite a bit of seafood. Do you and Moe fish or go crabbing/clamming? It's a fun hobby and the reward is, of course, dinner. DH fishes several times/month during the season and we go crabbing or dig for clams when the mood for linguini or chowder strikes. Once a year, usually in late July or early August, he goes tuna fishing for a week. DH also has a personal use lobster license. It allows him to maintain up to ten pots for $120/year. We never have ten pots in the water at once though 'cause he doesn't want to maintain that many and it's too much lobster for two people. Also, he's a fair weather lobsterman. (chuckle) If the long-term weather forecast looks rough - he'll pull the pots. If we do have extra we take them to our fishmonger and trade for whatever looks good. We have a Nordic Tug and a little lobster boat but that's not really necessary. There's always guys at the docks, at least here, looking for extra people to go fishing with them to help share the fuel costs. Anyway, just wondering if you fish? Here, frequently people that love seafood eventually want to drop a line in the water. The lure of the lobster pot is why we got Whiskey River, our first boat (a little 22' sport lobster). Your dinner looks fantastic! DH hasn't had any pots in the water since Sandy. We've got our hands full without going out to check pots that we can't even cook the catch. :( /tricia

Angelaid, I love potato pancakes but I would say that is is my favourite version. There is no secret to making these pancakes. I've made them with mashed potatoes that I made specifically for making these pancakes and I've also made extra mashed potatoes for dinner and saved the leftovers for these pancakes. When I make them with the leftover mashed potatoes there is also butter in the mix. This is not a stiff or thick batter. I use a 1/4 cup measuring cup to scoop up the batter. Mere Blanc's Potato Pancakes From:www.thedailyspud.com with very minor changes. 2 small baking potatoes 1/4 cup milk 1/3 cup All-Purpose flour 2 eggs, separated 1-1/2 tablespoons heavy cream Pinch of salt Pepper Fresh chives (or green onions) Butter for frying Cook potatoes until tender Mash with a little milk. Let potatoes cool before adding the remaining milk, cream, flour, egg yolks, salt, pepper and chives. Beat Egg Whites until stiff. Fold into potato mixture. Do not over mix. This is a light but thick batter. Heat a griddle or skillet. ( I used a rectangle electric frying pan) . Brush with butter. Using a 1/4 cup measuring cup drop batter on to griddle. Terri, I love sparkling grape juice and we always have it at family dinners but I did not think to get some for tonight. Ann, I just happened to catch the Barefoot Contessa last week and she made the Green Goddess dressing. It just sounded so good to me...well anything with a c. of fresh basil suits me just fine! This is a very refreshing and just plain GOOD salad dressing. Basil Green Goddess Dressing 1 cup good mayonnaise 1 cup chopped scallions, white and green parts (6 to 7 scallions) 1 cup chopped fresh basil leaves 1/4 cup freshly squeezed lemon juice (2 lemons and see My Note) 2 teaspoons chopped garlic (2 cloves) 2 teaspoons anchovy paste 2 teaspoons kosher salt (see note) 1 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper 1 cup sour cream Salad: 3 heads Bibb lettuce 2 to 3 tomatoes Place the mayonnaise, scallions, basil, lemon juice, garlic, anchovy paste, salt and pepper in a blender and blend until smooth. Add the sour cream and process just until blended. (If not using immediately, refrigerate the dressing until ready to serve.) Cut each head of lettuce into quarters, remove some of the cores, and arrange on 6 salad plates. Cut the tomatoes into wedges and add to the plates. Pour on the dressing and serve. NOTES: I did not add any salt to this recipe due to the anchovy paste. Also, I got a 1/4 c. juice from just half a lemon and a small lemon at that! Michelle

Kath--I can almost smell the curry. Man, do I love that smell! Almost as good as the taste.

Prime rib, crab legs, salad and a few roasted potatoes. A bottle of Silver Oak that we have been hoarding, probably Prosecco and grapes at midnight.

Patti, that is what we did on Christmas Eve.

Bengardening, tomorrow I will regret not going to Mass tonight.

Sounds goo LuAnn. Kathleen, I never developed a taste for curry.

Raven, that is our regular Saturday night meal, not the fries but we often have wings.

We drove 3 hours today to Joliet to go to our favorite Chinese restaurant. We brought home:

Chicken Fried Rice
Chicken Egg Foo Young
5 orders of Egg Rolls
and they threw in a container of Buffalo Wings (free for the new year)

We have enough for several days. It's a long drive but SO worth it.

For dinner tonight we had calamari, pot stickers, steamed rice and whole kernel corn.

I made a shrimp dip to have with chips later this evening. We usually go to bed at midnight so we will bring in the new year.

Oh my gosh. We had shrimp and scallops and oysters and clams and muscles and calamari and homemade pasta she crab soup and rack of lamb and roast beef and chicken cordon blue and pate and brie and so many different salads and a platter of assorted cheeses and cheese cake and chocolate cake and bread pudding and bananas Foster and on and on and on. I ate so much I hurt. It was a lovely evening. I'm glad I went. We generally stay home but decided to join in on the fun this year. It was funny to watch though. We're all getting older and everyone was wondering if they could make it to midnight. I remember the years we went until 2:00 -3:00 and even 4:00 in the morning.

Jan & I went shopping and got home late, so neither of us really felt like cooking so I got a silly idea...

I told Jan to call the chinaman and tell him to get on his bicycle,,,which of course is my way of telling her to order chinese and let them do the dishes.

Our chinese restaraunt is only 1/2 block away and they actually deliver here on a bicycle because it is faster and more convenient than driving a car.

We had lots of food from the cookout but I only ate a chicken wing, a honey barbecued one, a hot dog, some kind of chicken rice casserole my sister in law brought, coleslaw, onion and cucumber salad, cheese potatoes and a piece of lemon meringue pie. There was so much other food I wanted to try but didn't. I will have some of it today after church for our lunch.
