Real gift boxes at Big Lots

Not those flimsy, cheap, folding things from the dept stores that cave in as you try to wrap them!

I hadn't been to Big Lots in years as the one near me is junky, but they opened a new one in a shopping area I frequent and I needed ornament hangers so I ran in. I was so surprised to see one side of an aisle with the hard boxes with lids like the ones we grew up with. Lots of different sizes. Now, they all have Christmas designs, not plain, but you can just add ribbon, no wrapping paper needed. Wonder if they carry plain boxes other times of the year.

I got so fed up with those folding boxes that I stopped asking for them entirely and pretty much switched to using only gift bags, but sometimes you want a box instead.

They not be as highy quality as what we had growing up but they're sure way better than the folding ones!

Joanie, so funny! I especially hate the ones that you need a master's degree to figure out how to assemble them. Then, they rip if you don't do it right.

But, I refuse to buy boxes. Good though that you found what works for you.

OT: Did you have your last day of work, or is it coming up soon?

oh-- I loathe big lots but i DO need boxes so I'll make a run tomorrow. At least it's next to the state store-- so I'll stock up on wine and spirits!

I was also wondering about your last day-- I wanted to wait a little to allow you to adjust to the change. Hope you are loving your time!

WOW! These are the greatest ideas:) If you're going for inexpensive, I love TennesseeKathy's idea of wildflower seeds in the envelope. I've seen where you can print these out for free all over the internet:) I also love Superiorgirls idea of cinnamon ornaments,and as matter of fact I made some last night!!! This is a recipe I used years ago,and the ornaments really last,they don't rot or mildew in the heat and humidity here. I will give the recipe. I made 48 2" hearts and 2 3" stars,only the stars kinda came out like starfish:). They will smell nice for years! And they dried out overnight. A little hint....use more cinnamon to sprinkle if it's too sticky,the cornstarch makes them too white, and really knead the dough til it cools.You have to use it within 30 minutes. Now,what I always make at Christmas time is soup in a jar. All year I collect baskets at yard sales,and if I'm lucky to find wide mouth mason jars, I buy those,too,but they're cheap enough:) And like someone else mentioned, I buy the bakery bags at the dollar store,you get 8 bags for $1. I make something called I'm Dreaming of a White Christmas Soup mix I found on the internet,and make the rice bags like Sunshine mentioned:) Those are so great! I make a square one with 4 compartments,and I make a long rectangular one with 4 compartments. I use mine all the time! I found these on the internet for a get-well package. You could use leftover turkey at holiday time to make the soup,but I always add a can of chicken so all the ingredients are there. Recipe for this in the link. I print out the recipe on nice paper,and attach with raffia. Cut out a nice circle of fabric if you want for the jar lid. If I make the rice buddy, I use the same fabric for the jar. NON-EDIBLE!!! Cinnamon Applsesauce Ornaments 3/4 cup applesauce 1 packet unflavored gelatin 1 jar cinnamon(1.9oz) I buy the cinnamon at the dollar store at 2/$1 and its over 2oz in a jar,so I use half a jar,then use more to sprinkle on when I roll them out. 1/4 cup cornstarch 3 tablespoons ground cloves Combine applesauce and gelatin in small saucepan and let stand for 3 minutes. heat over medium heat constantly stirring just til simmering. combine cinnamon,cornstarch and cloves in separate bowl. Stir in applesauce mixture. Turn onto counter and knead a f ew turns. Divide dough in half and wrap each half in plastic wrap. use within 30 minutes. Roll dough between sheets of plastic wrap to a scant 1/4" thickness. Cut ornaments using 2 inch cookie cutters. Use a straw to cut holes for hanging. dry on wire rack overnight. Reroll scraps and repeat cutting. These are great! Also THESE ARE NON-EDIBLE!! and here's the link for the soup mix,everyone loves this soup! we add fresh celery and carrots,and everyone starts asking before Christmas if we're making it again! Crispix Puppy Chow 12 oz. box Crispix cereal 1/2 cup butter 1 cup peanut butter 12 oz. pkg. chocolate chips 2 to 3 cups powdered sugar In medium microwave-safe bowl, combine butter, peanut butter and chocolate chips and microwave on high for 2 to 3 minutes, stirring once during cooking, until mixture is melted and smooth. Place the cereal in another large bowl and pour the melted mixture over the cereal. Stir until the cereal is thoroughly coated. Pour the powdered sugar into a large plastic food bag. Pour the coated cereal into the powdered sugar and shake until it is well covered with the sugar. Pour the cereal onto wax paper to cool and dry. Store in tightly covered containers at room temperature This recipe is fast and easy and everyone loves it. I add a little more roasted peanuts. Put them in a nice little bakery bag and it's a great gift! Something else I make is a milk bath sachet. I found where to print up beautiful envelopes and I bought a stack of vellum paper at a yard sale to print them on for a dime:) I'll probably never use all the paper I bought! Haven't been able to get here for several days; I have the box packed to go to Afgh. right after T'giving. I did get the special box from the PO. "My" PO volunteered the inform that it's $2 less to military addr so that brings it to 10.95. Every little bit helps. My neice's PO didn't offer that tidbit re: pkg to her step-son in Iraq. She'll be mailing from my mom's PO & not mess with hers. A friend gave me a gift cert he wasn't going to use, & that helped a LOT when I started buying. I can't remember now what all I stuffed in there! toothbrush, toothpaste, dental floss, sanitary wipes, indiv. packets of kool-aid & gatoraid, snacks, etc. I even found 2-oz bottles of honey!! Had never seen that before. Think I might be able to get in a booklet of devotions. Doesn't matter if it's the 'right' date or not.....I usually read them on 'off' dates. :-) I included a couple of games....remember the ones with a maze and a small bb to get thru the maze? I found them last year on a Dollar Store clearance!! I have the box FULL; plan to take it to the PO before I seal it to be sure it's ok. The g'son I thought would be in VA will be 'in transit' and maybe, just maybe, be HOME for Christmas. But I'm fixing his Christmas w/ shipping in mind. I did learn that because he lives in a particular type barracks (training)...sorry, don't remember what my son called it....he can't have snack stuff because of 'vermin'. So! books & other things are being gathered! I appreciate the extra suggestions. As we all share ideas, we can help each other and our military. I'll check out the anysholdier.com, too. if u don't want to go the book route, how about a savings bond?? u pay $25 and in 15-20 (i forget which) years its worth $50., i know its doesn't sound like a lot but we did that for our kids since birth. for my oldest it paid half of her college bill in junior year. had the whole family on board and everyone did it when they were too little realize they really didn't "get" anything.. everyone always got them a little something to go with it, so when they we knew they should get presents, they had something to open.. the amounts go as high as $500 i think. did it for every occasion, it really adds up!!! $500 bond, $1,000 in allotted time plus interest if u hold onto them past the mature date....

Love your ideas to make your space work for your family. It is a nice big space - i'm not an expert but have been finalizing our design to accommodate our family so been TKO - and these are the two areas that I'd want to look at a bit more: 1) powder room/mudroom/family entry/pantry - lots of space, but could potentially become even more functional. You're smart to focus on what you want, but the current layout is causing a hiccup with the kitchen flow 2) the fridge/snacks placement - seems to be a flow challenge Idea #1: It looks like you can have a nice family entry and have it connect with the mudroom/not have that go through your pantry. What if you shifted the powder room to the other wall? And put a long run of cabinets between the mudroom from garage and family entry. There might be enough space for hooks or shallow cabinets on the powder room wall as well. The fridge & snacks are far from where you are coming in the door, and where you are eating. I would want them over near/in the morning room - could you do a little area in there with a sink, refrigerator drawers, snack drawers? like the box in blue. Then your fridge placement isn't as much of an issue, and you could potentially close off your pantry from the mudroom/use your pantry for a 2nd fridge when they get older/you need the space. Idea #2: Or, to give you a full corner of cabinets/no thru-traffic into the pantry in that corner, and access closer to your morning room -- do you move your pantry to be 'behind' the current range wall? Blue - pantry - with entrance from kitchen, or via family entry. I'd want from kitchen, in a 'hidden' door Green - benches/hooks. looks to be as much storage as your original. Pink - powder room Orange - fridge (or do fridge drawers here and a full fridge on the wall with the range) Yellow - range. Corner placement isn't for everyone, but it looks like it could be a good option for you - and either way, I'm sure a KD could help with a strong layout if you move the pantry entrance. Look forward to seeing what you decide - will be a great space for your family!

Awwww...thanks Ellendi and funky art for asking about my retirement. My last day was the day before TG. No real fanfare when I left because I didn't want any...just a quick goodbye to all. So far it's been wonderful. The best thing is sleeping in, especially since I don't sleep well to begin with...no having to get up early and go to work on a few hours sleep. With the holidays, I am keeping busy....I just hope I don't get bored come January...but I think there will be enough house projects to work on. I don't miss the office and all the nonsense one bit!

I'm a box saving fiend. In our family, you never judged a gift by the box as we have them from way back when. I still have the box that my old spinning wheel toy came in...must be 50 yrs old by now. Every once in awhile, I go through and try to reorganize them and toss the oldest or worst conditioned. But boxes I've got.

A bit OT, but Big Lots has (or at least had) really great wool socks dirt cheap. I bought six pairs, wish I'd bought @ 20!

I ventured into Big Lots today because of this thread. I needed shirt size boxes for my dad's Christmas gifts. The dang box sizes I needed were $5 and $9. Now I am not cheap, but wasn't about to spend that on a box he would just take home to never use again! I went next door to the Dollar Tree and bought a bag instead. It goes better with my wrapping paper I'm using this year anyway.

It was only the 2nd time I went to Big Lots. First time was out of curiosity. Won't be going back, but at least it was clean.

Allison...I suppose I was remiss in not checking the prices of the boxes. I was just so excited to see real boxes instead of the folding ones. I did not buy any because I have quite a collection of bags from the dollar store as well and didn't need any, but I agree with you...those prices are ridiculous. I'm sorry I caused a wasted trip for you or anyone else.

Thanks, but it wasn't really wasted. I had been to office supply store in the same center. They are really nice boxes though.

A bit off topic, but it's about the evolution of Big Lots.

40+ years ago there was a small chain of stores in the Los Angeles area called Pic n Save. They carried cheap trinkets and overstock things, as a kid I LOVED that store because I could shop for everyone on a kids budget. They carried a lot of 2nds and out of season items.

Later they started carrying seasonal things they were like a precurser to dollar stores. They eventually changed the name to Big Lots but it was mainly due to their getting "Lots" of unclaimed or 2nds merchandise. You really had to pick thru to find gems, but you could get really good deals. I found it was a great place to outfit the kids when they moved in to their first places-dishes, linens, even food was cheap.

Then they started getting more seasonal decor in and started opening more stores as a 3rd tier retailer-places like Marshalls and Home Goods being 2nd tier. Before long they started bringing in really cheaply made furniture and it's now evolved into what it is today-a CRAPPY 2nd tier retailer. Their prices are not cheap-just like at Tuesday Morning...they will have one or two loss leaders and the rest of the stuff is quite spendy for what it is.

My eldest DD worked at Big Lots while she was in college-so I'd end up going there pretty frequently to visit her, that was just before they started getting furniture in. Now with their TV ads, they have evolved way beyond their original beginnings!

Pesky.....I remember Pic n Save......wow......a real blast from the past. I had no idea it morphed into Big Lots. Big Lots came to my area maybe 10-15 years ago. The one I just went to is a lot nicer than the one near me.

It's definitely not a store I will frequent, but I did pick up a few things and thought the prices were OK.

I always need boxes, but don't know if there is a Big Lots near us. I will check it out.

Glad retirement is good. A recent study showed older people are the happiest. Well, duh. They are retired! Ã°ÂÂÂ. I hope to discover those joys within a few years. So happy for you. One note, if you do get bored, you can always volunteer or sub at a school. We are always looking for good people!

I remember when I worked at an artist's supply store in college. Next door was a Hickory Farms. HF had great looking boxes and there was always a pile of them outside by the back doors. I used to love the look on family members faces when they thought they got a deluxe cheese log assortment!

The packaging was always pretty and the boxes were well made. I still have a few to store ornaments in just so I can recall those old days. Now I like pretty hat boxes and other fabric covered containers that can be reused. We also like to make fancy fabric bags and use them every year. I like the look of the fabric bags with their fancy trims under the tree. Little items or parts of toys don't get lost in the bags during a party and people like reusing them. It's fun to see ones I made years ago return.

I went there today specfically to look at the boxes. I was almost convinced my store didn't have them because they weren't with the other Christmas stuff although they had other Christmas boxes. Finally, on the OTHER side of the store I saw them...sign said 80 cents to $10. I picked up TWO of the size I wanted and then saw they would have cost me $17. They went back on the shelf. Nice boxes,tho....
