Trying to cover all my bases by posting the same message here as I just did on Computer Help forum.

I have a Dell Laptop Latitude D520 with Windows 7. It was bought for me last year and not new. For the longest time, the battery was staying 100% charged and now it's at 88% with the message plugged in, not charging.

I've changed the plug in area, but nothing has changed.

What's the operating difference between a new and replacement battery? Is it worth it to buy a replacement? Should I also be replacing the charger?

My 4 yr old laptop stopped holding a charge. Like you it would show less and less percentage of charge. I would run the battery down regularly and charge it fully again.

My previous laptop, I kept the battery in all the time and the battery wouldn't hold a charge at all. So I no longer keep the battery in.

I bought a replacement battery at Amazon for $30.....far cheaper than anywhere else.

It's not uncommon for the battery to do that. I have the same thing on my netbook. I ordered a replacement battery for mine. If you leave it plugged in all the time, try instead letting it drain down over half way from time to time.
I don't think your charger is bad probably just the battery.
If you use the laptop portable and need that then you will need a new battery. If you only use it in one place and don't use the battery then it's really up to you whether you get a replacement.
If that's the case you can remove the battery and just leave it plugged in like a desktop if you have that ability with that laptop.

One of my neighbors purchased a house that had been vacant for 7 years, and the garden not tended for many more. What she found was: A large area of blackberry thicket, out of which was growing and blooming 2 very old Madame Caroline Testout roses. They had climbed up a nearby plum tree to get light, and were also growing over the fence and onto the next door neighbor's roof of their one story house. A mature apricot tree right in the middle of the back yard - it was twisted and very old, but still bloomed and bore fruit. LOTS of volunteer trees - plums, eugenie, privet, and eucalyptus, to name a few. Also some huge pine trees on the perimeter, which had been there for ages. My garden was not abandoned, but little had been done to it for 20 years when we moved into our house. It had at least 50 surviving roses - most of the survivors were teas, hybrid wichuranas, or other really old roses. A couple of the teas had gotten huge - maybe 15 feet wide, and 8-9 feet tall. There were 5 surviving hybrid teas, but they had dwindled, and did not bloom (except for Cl La France, as noted below). The old old roses had gotten bigger, and bloomed a huge amount. Thornless (thank heavens!) blackberry had taken over an area at the back of the property about 20 ft square, and there was another area where volunteer fig and plum trees had made a sort of forest. Looking for advice from folks who have lots of experience with medium scale worm breeding and casting production” Most of us here do smaller scale. “I can already tell that much of the advice out there is like the advice on regular composting - easiest case advice that has been reprinted enough times that certain things become 'consensus' thus must be true.” The same thing happens here. Since you are asking questions about things we may not have experience with, expect more of that kind of advice. “the advice out there that says a worm population will double in 90 days is silly - under ideal conditions they could increase 100 fold in that time period.” The WEIGHT of the worm population can double every 90 days. The numbers will more than double, but many of the new worms will be babies. “My assumption is that the fastest way to get a large population going is to master the right conditions and then to have very low density. IE, a pound of worms in one bin is not going to yield the same population in three months as will the same pound of worms spread across 2,4, or 8 bins.” I have no idea how you come to that conclusion. Worms only breed so fast. Separating them from potential partners does not speed up the process. You want to avoid overcrowding the worms, but one pound in the kind of bin you describe is far from overcrowding. “Is there a minimum number you experienced breeders have found to be the minimum effective dose to ensure worms are finding one another and doing the horizontal worm mambo” Two. “or have these suckers been around a few million years because if there are two they will track one another down and ensure the survival of the species?” I don’t know if anyone here has really researched that, but conventional wisdom says that if your population is not dense enough, you will have less breeding. “For Bins, I am building continuous flow through bins using plastic garbage pails since they are cheap and large.” But are not strong enough to hold the weight of the VC, especially if you have cut a hole in the bottom large enough to facilitate harvesting. Bins made the way you describe tend to collapse under the weight of the VC “I figured the cranked spinning bar would likely just dig a groove above the grate and require some hand loosening anyway” That has been my experience. “I was thinking I'd use 'unfinished' hot compost. By unfinished, I mean it has been turned a couple times and there are still identifiable chunks like leaves that are blackened but largely whole.” This would make great bedding. If your hot compost has a balance of C to N, it would also be great food, and would require no additional food. “Am I right that unfinished compost, so long as it doesn't heat up is more or less perfect and would spur breeding since it would represent a mountain of perfect food source and stay pretty constant in terms of temp and moisture level with minimal effort?” Probably. “Food: I will quickly have more worms than I will have food scraps suitable for feeding them,” You are being optimistic. Perhaps you would do better to put it in your hot bins and precompost it. “I have read that too many coffee grounds are bad for worms due to acidity.” A lot of people say that. I don’t buy it. “Is there another reason they would be bad?” Besides that worms don’t like to eat them until they have decomposed a bit? “I don't want to make feeding the worms a full time job so if I get sufficient numbers I know a nursery that will sell a truckload of horse stall compost cheap.” That may be the answer to getting them to breed faster as well. “It's a tad warm usually but I'm thinking that spreading an inch on top of the bins and lightly watering it would prevent heating and I've read that there is no better food for feeding compost worms and getting them to breed/mature quickly?” Correct, and correct.

Most of the densely populated parts of Florida are so barely above sea level (see map below for an indication) that it always surprises me to see any basements there. Retrofitting a foundation to resist water tables that exceed the level of the basement floor would rarely be effective. (That's why sump pumps are used to to drain water inflows.) Exterior waterproofing, though, could be used to eliminate water entry from the walls; from the interior, crystalline spray waterproofing would also be effective. As for the cleanup: remove anything that provides food for mildew and mould. If you haven't seen it already, the linked FEMA booklet describes cleanup methods. If stachybotrys atra was identified, be especially careful. You might want to consider installing: at least two sump pumps with battery backups; and wireless flood detectors that would notify you by messaging or cell that flooding had been detected. There's never been HVX in the part of the garden where my seedling popped up. It was woodland until 8 or 10 years ago. But I agree with ademink. I've had a hosta I would have sworn was virused twice. The first I doused with weed killer and put a paver over so I wouldn't accidentally use the area. The hosta managed to grow out from under the paver and hasn't shown a trace of virus since. The second I put off until fall, never got to, and it was fine the next year. If it's not where it will infect anything else, give it a year.

So if you take the battery out, it keeps running and how?

I was wondering if the charger, which I keep plugged in, needs replacing, too?

I feel so silly not knowing the answers.

And is a replacement battery as reliable as a new one, or would you expect it to not last as long?

Ok Raven, I don't have WiFi, so laptop stays in one place.

I have DSL through AT&T so I'm guessing I could remove the battery. How is that an advantage? And how would I run down the battery or drain it from time to time? And again I'm asking how would that help?

Feeling so very uninformed. Thank you Jasdip and Raven.

I got my new replacement battery on EBay for $15 a year ago - of course, I don't know which vendor.

If it's working and you don't rely on battery life for unconnected use, there's no problem.

I agree with the suggestion to not leave laptops constantly plugged in. They should very regularly (once a week or so) be disconnected and fully run down before being recharged.

There are many cheap, third party (not original equipment) batteries on the market for laptops and smartphones and I would avoid them like a plague. That's why they're cheap, and it's what you typically find being sold by generic web and eBay sellers. The most likely component to catch fire in a device is the lithium battery, buying something cut-rate of unknown quality is a false economy.

Always look for brand name (OEM or OEM approved) batteries to be safe. For now, granlan, I think there's nothing you need do. If it will run with the battery out, do that when it no longer holds a charge. No need for concern.

You run down the battery by unplugging from the power and using it strictly from the battery. That's how a laptop is supposed to be used, you unplug it and carry it to your bedroom or recliner etc. During this time it is using the battery power. In your case just unplug it and use it in place running from the battery to drain it down.
It will depend on the quality of the replacement battery as to how well it holds up. I got mine from a battery supply store on eBay matching exactly what was on my existing battery. Since your laptop was used your battery could be a replacement.
You can remove the battery from the laptop and just plug the laptop into the power leaving the battery out of the equation. Mine are that way I don't know anything about yours to give you instructions.
You can try going to Google and search for the exact model of it and quite possibly find good information about your laptop.

You all have been so much help and I'm understanding the situation so much better. Such a relief to me to learn these things.

I have already seen the battery and it is a Dell and I had decided I'd be getting the same when I did need to purchase another. Not sure if the current battery is a used one or not; my dear brother-in-law found this laptop for me. I'm glad to have it after my new ASUS was stolen from my home last May; I sure was enjoying that thing.

I am not an advocate of removing the battery and using it on the charger alone. If you lose power, even for an instant, you can lose all saved settings in the computer, you may even have to reset the CMOS in rare circumstances but we are talking about Dell. You'll likely corrupt files and more. Leave the battery in. Even if it doesn't last long, it'll give you a chance to shut it down properly and possibly save headaches down the road.

The scenario you're describing cynic is no different than what happens with a desktop when power goes out. You may lose what's currently in progress or open files if changed, usually nothing else. Such problems can be avoided by saving work product files regularly and/or making sure autosave functions are turned on.

A surge can disrupt settings but a clean power cut out usually won't.
