If you worry where to plant - make a lasagna bed ( a lot of pics)
Comments (17)manda 3 - last year, I started in the Spring. I didn't have dates on my camera that time, so I'm not sure exactly when. Judging by the order of my pictures, it was just befor the Easter. I haven't done this in one day. I was adding additional material with time. As it was pointed out, it did condensed. At the begining, I started with carboard, coffee grounds, kitchen scabs. With time, I knew I had to use material ready for planting. So, I had a layer of soil, peat most, compost, etc. Frankly, I was using whatever I could find on sale at that time. I think, I was building almost until tomatoes' planting time. Interesting, the bed didn't shrank much more. In the fall, when I cleaned tomatoes, I removed the fence and my DH took those bricks away (they are left over from building a house and will be used for outside BBQ). Anyway, in the spring he'll build me a bed from wood, similar to other beds in the garden. As a matter of fact, he wants the space between the house and the bed (see morz8's comments). I guess, we'll have to do it. BTW, last year, I've buit two beds like this. This one was for tomatoes, the other one was for potaoes. I didn't have much soil, compost, etc, etc. So the potatoes bed didn't get much of that good staff. Needless to say, I can attest, potaoes don't like to grow on the carboard only and be covered with only strow. But that's another story and, again, quite a few pictures.......See MoreCloudless Sulphur Cats on Partridge Peas
Comments (22)Susan, I am seeing the Spined Soldier Bugs along with a bug that I've never seen before! Here is a picture... They all just hang around my Sennas & wait! GRRRR is right!!! I tried using my scissors but they are too fast! I have been squishing any Milkweed bugs I see & have smashed a few beetles that were probably Soldier bugs! I don't have time to "stand guard"!!! I also have a 'Lavendar Lady' Passionvine in a pot(they won't survive our winter) & it is under one of my bird feeders. The Carolina Wrens have pretty much kept the GF cats off it but it has very few leaves & no blooms. I will use a different location for it next spring...just too tempting for the birds! I have been checking daily my milkweed, sennas, & rue but haven't seen any more eggs so far! Just tons of wasps & bugs laying in wait! I keep seeing the females hanging around but haven't "caught them in the act!" I have a new plant that volunteered is definitely in the pea family...I think it is Strophostyles helvola...Trailing Fuzzybean. I'm not sure if it is a host but it volunteered in my BF garden where the Hairy Vetch was earlier this year. I let it grow but haven't seen anything on it so far. I had a ton of Orange Sulphurs this spring but haven't seen any since the host plants dried up! I am still seeing a few Little Yellows as well as Phaon Crescents(they are so tiny!) Sherry, didn't you post a picture of GST eggs vs BST eggs? The cats are so tiny still, I'm not sure if they are all BSTs! Thanks, Lila...See MoreHurricane Ike
Comments (45)There are always idiots like that in these hurricanes. I haven't been watching TOO much local news because it can really get to be too much. But I was listening to a local TV station a couple of hours ago and apparently there has already been some major flooding in Galveston, Channelview, and some other low lying areas near the gulf and Galveston Bay. That was as of 6 this morning. A lot of people who THOUGHT they would ride it out were evacuating this morning. And some people were carrying stuff out of their house into their cars by wading through a couple of feet of water. You have to understand, the last major hurricane to hit Houston was in 1983. That was 25 years ago. And every time one of these storms hits the gulf, we are inundated with predictions of where it might hit for at least a week in advance. And so many times they are wrong - including this time. So, after so many "near misses" and especially after Rita 3 years ago when many evacuated and then it went east, and after Tropical Storm Eduard just about a month ago where many people evacuated, people just get immune. It's not easy to be told to evacuate over and over again and then you'd have been better off staying. It's nobody's fault, because there really is no way of REALLY knowing where it's going to hit that far in advance. But by the time it really does hit, well, it sort of becomes like the boy who cried wolf. Of course there are some who never listen as well. Anyway. It's still pretty quiet here at my house. I don't expect to see much before the wee hours of the morning. Hope Karen and Jim and Brenda check in soon!...See MoreSSSSSupport 6-September - 11-September
Comments (29)DeeMarie: Did your MIL accept the invite? Why not ask her to teach you how to cook a Hungarian dish? She'd just have to supply you with an ingredient shopping list or maybe you guys could go shopping tohether! Couldn't DH pick her up? HAHA. I'm trying to make your weekend MORE busy for you! LOL! :) Raeanne~ Enjoy the weekend! Man, your kids sounds like jetsetters! They travel as much as you do! Marci: Glad you had a goood start. Hope Tuesday is smooth sailing. QOD: Today, I'm headed downtown for a lunch. It's DH's last day of his internship. Then I have to do some biz at work and get an emissions test on my car. Hope it passes. Tonight, DH and I are headed out to a quick dinner and a drink while one DD is at her high school football game. I have to be very, very careful eating out as I think I am entering plateau territory in my weight loss. The good news is I have lost over 15 inches in bust, waist, abs, and hips. Saturday, we're all going to the last fair of the year---it's the biggest. But if it rains too hard, we'll pass on it. Sunday is a birthday party for a family friend of my youngest DD. I will stay at the party to help my friend with her new baby while she runs the party. Baby holding!!!! I love it!!!! Then, later, we're having our neighborhood picnic and BBQ. They have it on our community tennis courts (lots of room!) and are having one of those blow up bouncy room-things for the kids----and lots of food---POTLUCK! There are 42 families and usually a good turnout. I am in charge of one of the grills, so I'll be having fun for sure! Somewhere in there, I have to balance a checkbook and reconcile 2 credit card statements. And there's the ever-present laundry! BESH! Are you still on WW? Check in! Have a GREAT weekend! Cheers!...See Moreemerogork
