Bedding question

We recently purchased a Serta queen memory bed on trial and found it too firm so we returned it after a couple of weeks. Our existing bed was an older (than 10 years) latex bed. While we had the new Serta bed set, I slid the latex mattress onto the new foundation, and the older latex mattress then felt great.

So after we returned the Serta set, I thought to just place a sheet of plywood over the old box spring, but surprisingly, the latex mattress then felt too hard. I am confused, as I thought that a foundation was basically a rigid 'box' on which the mattress rests on? Why then would plywood on a box spring feel more stiff? I am thinking maybe I should just purchase a new box spring (or foundation?) and keep the latex mattress.
