Best wishes to your DH and to you. Sorry about the boss. My DH had a partial knee replacement done last summer and the results have been nothing short of miraculous. Be assiduous in following the prescribed physical therapy.

Thanks KD. We've certainly heard that is the key. DH is a good patient when it comes to that, so I'm hoping for good results.

Hope everything goes smoothly and that the weather doesn't interfere. They are saying you could get slammed. As long as the hotel isn't too far from the hospital, you should be fine.

I am also sorry to hear your boss is being difficult. Good job getting that paperwork in to him! Sheesh-years like you are having is just when people need support from work, not criticism. Hang in there!

Oh, and good move (literally and figuratively) being in a 55+ community.

Good luck to your DH! It really has been quite the year for you guys, hopefully this will all go quickly and he'll be up and feeling fine soon. I'm sorry your boss is being a jerk. It stinks that he's being difficult when you need support the most.

Well...your DH's surgery-calendar certainly warrants a sympathetic "UFFDA" from this ND-Norwegian!

Has he been able to do any pre-surgery knee-strengthening exercises? I started in early-August for my 9/26 TKR.

I s'pose you two been getting everything ready around the house?! Shower-chair, toilet riser, foot-lift strap, walker, cane, icewater-circulation pumper, etc., etc......

He HAS to be very diligent about hitting the stretching, exercises, & PT...HARD. You can't let up...AT ALL. I was very faithful to my routine, painful as it was sometimes! I knew I HAD to do it right, or I'd regret it. I still do some of the exercises daily (with both legs!). My TKR involved extra ligament-work (MCL & LCL) too, along with added anchors.

Now...4 months later...I'm stronger and more stable (KNEE-wise anyway...lol!!) than I was b4!!!

DH has had both knees replaced. I regret to report that while he can get up and down stairs easily, and can walk distances without pain, it did not improve his golf game, as he had requested. :-)

One thing that DH did both times that was a godsend for us, he had inpatient rehab for a couple of weeks after his surgery. DH had PT and OT an hour each everyday except Sunday. By the time he came home, he was well down the road to recovery. If you can arrange in-patient rehab for your husband, I think you'll be pleased.

faron, yes, we had a choice each time. What confused me, though, was it is not something that you can plan ahead for. It has to be a recommendation made by the doctor, while you are in the hospital. Then someone on the hospital staff makes the arrangements for you to transfer to inpatient rehab.

DH is slender but he's a tall man. I don't think I could have helped adequately for those first few weeks when his mobility was greatly limited. Plus, if he had been at home, I would have had to get him to PT and it would have only been 3 times a week. With inpatient rehab, he got PT once a day and OT once a day - both giving him good, supervised exercise.

I was reluctant the first time, but after seeing how difficult it was for him to get around and after seeing how much help he needed, and how much attention he got, I was eager for him to go the second time, and so was he. We have a friend who did not go to inpatient rehab, and his recovery seemed much slower than DH.

Within 3 months of getting his new knee, DH was back on the golf course (with his doctor's blessing).

Age of patient...extent of rebuilding done...distance from Hospitals/Rehab locations...,etc. Are these some of the factors I wonder....

Golf after 3 months?!?!? Wow! I don't know if mine would've been ready for that! I'm right-handed, so my new left knee/ligaments/anchors would be getting all that twisting stress.
I'll have to inquire if I can golf this spring. That would be roughly late-April here, & therefore 7 months after my surgery. You'd think it'd be ok by THEN?!?!? lol!

Checking in from our hotel in Boston. We arrived last night around 6:30 pm. It's been a leisurely day so far today. Plan to venture over to MGH for lunch in a bit. DH is in good spirits. Thank you all for the well wishes. I'll try to post later today.

Because of yesterday's storm, surgery has been rescheduled to Friday. We've decided to stay in Boston rather than leaving today and coming back tomorrow. Off to do some shopping!

Good for you! I'm sure I'm not the only one who was worried about you both being on the roads and then back again. Enjoy the down time!
