you might want to check to make sure "Page Style" is not set to "No Style". In the version of Firefox I'm running it looks like this:

Yours might look slightly different but it should be similar.

I'm not saying that's what's causing it, just something for you to check.

Oh,chuggerguy I was soooooo hoping that would be my answer but sadly there's a dot in front of my "basic page". Thanks a whole bunch though for your idea as I didn't even know about page style choice. :) Yes,that is exactly what I'm seeing on websites(for message type sites) and even CNBC is messed up and nothing I click to check what the markets are doing for the day are showing up. Just the words futures for the Dow,S&P,Nasdaq but no numbers. :( I'm assuming something with the RSS feed is the culprit. Not sure why these sites think I'm on a mobile device which I don't even have but it's the same in both my browsers. :(

Try clearing all the browser temporary internet files. If you have Ccleaner perhaps run it. Then Restart the computer before using the browsers.

When I did what Chugger guy said to do mine changed to the one you have. When I changed it back it was the one I posted.

Maybe you have more than one problem. Did you scan to make sure you are not infected.

EmmaR,I had to end malwarebytes because it said my "trial period was over" funny I thought I just downloaded the Free one,guess not. I also had Super Anti Spyware but it stopped working for me so I delete it. All I have now is Spyware Blaster.

Whatever my problems are I couldn't see anything of what you said you saw on your computer in your first response. I also realized that all my photos lost the name I had for each.

I'm thinking if there is a IE repair fix that is available without me messing up worse if that would help my problems.Some of the sites just keep "searching"and do nothing but freeze up the computer so I have to shut down if I can even get the page to close. Thanks for all the ideas. :)

Maybe some of the others can tell if adware cleaner would be a good thing to use. I use it when I have a problem. If your protection software are not working it sounds like an infection. I had one years ago and I couldn't scan with any of my usual stuff. . If I were in your shoes I would down load Adware Cleaner and use, it won't hurt anything. If you do this watch for boxes that are checked for other things when you install it and remove the check marks. I would also download and install malwarebytes again. You could do that first.

I don't use Malwarebytes(I run Linux) but supposedly you can end the trial pretty easily: Malwarebytes Helpdesk

I don't know for sure but suspect you downloaded the correct one, they just make it very very easy for you to start a trial. :)

I think I've made things worse. I downloaded malwarebytes and super anti spyware which did scans. Nothing but tracking cookies were found. Anyway,and this actually made IE worse than it was,but I updated to IE 9 and now when I click any favorites they just sit and spin. So,IE is basically useless to me now. I'm thinking I could maybe use my cd's that I ordered when I first got the computer over eight years ago to put the computer back like it came but seriously I'm thinking at this point I've messed it up so bad that only getting a new computer is my answer. Really wanted to wait until the new Windows 9 or 10 came out. Now I think some aspirin is in order for me. LOLOL Really appreciate all of you guys/gals for your suggestions.

Personally, before I resorted to a recovery, I probably try a restore, assuming you have a good working point to restore to. Do you run Vista? http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-vista/turn-back-time-on-your-pc-undo-system-changes-with-system-restore.

Also, and this is just me, I'd probably have that aspirin, a coffee, a good nights sleep or whatever to get away from it and come back fresh. Actually, for me, knowing when to walk away is my most useful troubleshooting tool. :)

Since you're having trouble getting pages to even load now, it might not hurt to reboot your router. Just a guess though, probably won't help but it won't hurt.

Chuggerguy,yes I have Vista and I had done a restore back to end of November too. This IE9 wouldn't let me download IE unless I chose to download with MSN and Bing. Well,those things aren't letting me go anywhere either. Still only get the MSN comes up when starting and I can't choose any bookmarks or type in URL and get to anything. Not sure what to do about IE if not working at all. This is to much for a 67 year old lady who knows not much about the inner workings of computers. LOL

You say "this IE9 won't let me download IE". I don't understand that, you already have IE on your PC, there is nothing to download except an upgrade. Upgrade it and reset MSN to your favorite home page and choose the search engine you need. I use Google. I think MSN and Bing are just default settings, you can change them.

You can also reset IE by clicking Tools, then Internet Options, choose the Advanced Tab and click the reset button. Nothing to lose there.

I ended up doing a Firefox fix-it and lo and behold that made IE and Firefox go back to normal viewing pages with pictures etc. It also fixed my problem with IE only letting me view the homepage and when trying to go to another site it just kept seaching and I had to restart IE to stop it. Sure glad that's the last of my problems for now.
