for me building a scale model worked to figure out all the quirks of our bathroom. now that it's nearing completion I wish I had also done a few full sized paper mock ups - oh darn (and yes, we did a purple linoleum floor :)

Sometimes it really is hard to visualize spaces even with all of the 3-D modeling. While we have never done it for clients, when we added onto our home many years ago in anticipation of our 3rd kiddo's arrival, we actually "built" our kitchen in cardboard before ordering the cabinets. It caused us to make a few changes, and helped me really understand how the space would feel. Working with a really good designer or architect will yield the same results, without all that cardboard. :)
