Windows 8.1 cleaner question

I finally have a new computer with Windows 8.1.
My question is on my older laptop I have CC cleaner downloaded to clean my files. How do you clean the files in Windows 8.1? Do I still need CC cleaner?

I use the same things on my 2/ W 8.1's as I do on my 2/ W7 PC's

I recall a thread here, maybe a year ago, close to this topic. My takeaway then was: the poster did a pretty poor job of negotiating and decision-making in this area. It might be new for some (never hired or fired an employee, wasn't clear about expectations and price, etc.) and there's always an unknown variable even if the person cleans all your friend's homes. I think the benefit of a chain like Merry Maids is some (perceived) accountability but that means nothing if they're terrible. I've found that personal recommendations and long-standing local companies, at least, offer the most fair shot. I would totally provide the potential cleaner with the list and ask how much it will be. If it's not reasonable to you, don't hire them or cut your list. This is a human being who deserves good, kind communication (you benefit from it more actually) but is also an employee who can be fired at-will. There are a ton of options out there. GW is almost all posts inquiring about a product or service instead of buying blindly. Why would you hire someone to clean your house without doing the same? I've had the same lady cleaning my apt for over 10 years. It's a pretty simple business to start, which is why she did it while she pursued citizenship. (We even went to her oath ceremony.) After using a few friend's cleaners at my weekend house for six months, I ended up going with a local service who manage the people and give me single contact for all my questions. It's worked out great, but costs about 15% more. It took a while to find someone I liked, but I wouldn't settle for less than what I want. It seems that people do for some reason.

Joe, I'm not saying this would or would not be useful, I just found it with a search... http://www.bbcode-to-html.com/ Personally though, just because I like to do things the difficult way I'd probably throw copies of all the text files containing the bbcode into a folder and attempt to develop a script to convert them all in one go. I'm not saying I could do it, but I'd likely try. For instance, this rough beginning using "sed" works on the bbcode you posted above. It's missing a bunch of tags, even the regular [URL] one, but maybe it wouldn't be that difficult to extend. So you could try Mikie's idea of installing the Scanner on your Win 8 machine to see if it works so you only need one computer. If you old computer is a factory build you could not use your XP operating system in the new case because it is tied to the motherboard on the old machine. You can use the Easy file transfer to move all your personal stuff to the new confuser, works great and very simple to use. If the scanner works on the new computer and you have successfully transferred all your stuff you could then possibly install the drive from the old computer, reformat it and then do as you wish with it. I say possibly because the old computer may have an IDE drive where the new one will have a SATA drive. Being this far into SATA use I doubt your new computer will have an IDE connector on the motherboard. To see what hard drive is in the old machine remove the side panel and look. The newer SATA drives are connected to the motherboard and power supply with cables about 3/8 inch wide where the older hard drives has a data ribbon almost 2 inches wide and the power was 4 wires into an almost one inch wide plug.

Ed Bott who is a windows expert and a former editor of PC World has a great blog I often read. He some time back blogged about this subject, it is a very informative read as well as the comments area following it. I will provide a link. I know a lot of people that use various cleaner programs, and really it is a what works for one does not always work for someone else situation with them. Each person has different experience just as each user has different pc usage. The main reason for the caution in my post was simply to warn those that are not familiar with these products to know that there are situations that can occur that could really be unfortunate. Plus there are those companies out there that prey on novice users and put out junk products(all kinds of products). I think the greatest thing is when a person takes it upon themselves to educate and seek info and research deeply before taking on any kind of task! That is the real way to learn. Do your research and read all the pros and cons then you can make an informed decision. YES acting smart is definitely not being smart.... being smart is being informed and proceeding with caution (after major backups)! LOL Here is a link that might be useful: Ed's blog

Every time my we are done using the computer we run CC cleaner to clean up all the internet files. We had Windows 7. Do we still need this on Windows 8.1?

Just like windows 7, it didn't really need it. But it usually wont hurt anything unless you start adding check marks.

My browser is set to delete temporary file cache on exit. I do save cookies and history & forms(passwords) and every now and then I do delete those and start fresh. About the same as CCleaner. Windows runs automatic periodic maintenance and cleans most other things up correctly and nicely.

As an old protocol, while having my morning coffee I run CC on my W8.1 every Saturday morning along with updating other applications. I remove 3/4 to a full GB of flotsam. Never had a problem with it.

Re-read Mikie's comment. All browsers have an erase or clear function you can reach with no more than a few clicks. Some (like Firefox) can be set to automatically erase everything when closing.

You really don't need another program for this task.

Yes browsers have their own utilities, and they work just fine in servicing the browsers..

However, the member did not limit her question to browsers. "How do you clean the files in Windows 8.1?" is what she asked. CC cleans a whole roster of other Windows files.

Is the use of CC as I do necessary? Maybe, maybe not. It just an old protocol I use with admirable total system results.

Without wanting to appear to be pedantic, DA, and with all due respect, if you've "always" used it, how do you know what benefit you're experiencing by using it?

I don't use it and I experience admirable total system performance on my PCs too.

Fair question.

I have maintenance protocols which I utilize solely for the reasons that my systems always run care-free, and like new by using them. Some may be old school and none of them were my idea, but rather suggestions from respected users. A few minutes a week with a coffee is nothing in time to me. I feel why should I tempt fate or ignore success?

I downloaded cc cleaner on my husband's computer. I'm going to use the internet explorer options on mine.

As well, there are many temp files left from program installations, updates, and so on that are usually not removed automatically.
And that is related to the OS, not any browser.
CCleaner works well for that.

If you're worried about what's going to happen, just use the "Analyze" button and check what's going to be removed before clicking on "Run".

CCleaner also has a very good registry cleanup function under "Registry" - used it many times.
