too many photos on phone - what to do AND iCloud questions

DH bought me the new iPhone 6+. In transferring data from old iPhone to new one, I discovered that I have appx 1500 photos on my phone. Granted, I can probably delete 2/3rds of them. I take pictures willy nilly, using them as reminders, instead of writing notes, and just for silliness sometimes. It was so much data, the AT&T store had to keep my phone overnight to get all of the transfers done.

The first time I charged my new phone, I got a message that I had insufficient iCloud space to back up my phone. I went to iCloud.com from my non-Apple PC. All I could find saved was my Contacts. I would guess that I have 250 Contacts, hardly enough to eat up all of the free iCloud space. There is no Photo folder on my iCloud - that I can see.

So, here are my questions:

-Can I move the photos from my phone to an external hard drive? If so, how? Would it be better to move them someplace else, like my Photobucket account, where I could at least access them? Some photos are of events such as my niece's birthday party. I don't really want those photos, buy my sister does. What is the best method to get them to her? Thumb drive? Photobook?

-Why aren't my photos showing up in my iCloud account? Is it because I am accessing the account on a PC instead of an Apple product?

Any other advice for me?

I will guess that the first step of the iCloud backup is to calculate how much data you need to back up and when it saw that there was not enough space it reported the error without backing up any of the photos.

I don't have an iPhone, but can you connect it to your Windows computer? If so, you should be able to copy the photos from the phone to your computer.
When I plug my Android phone into my computer, I open 'Computer' and can see the phone as a storage device. From there, I can copy the photos to Windows (my pictures folder) or delete the ones that I don't want. In your case, you could copy them to the external hard drive that you mentioned.

If you already have a Photobucket account, can't you create an album of your Niece's birthday party, upload those pictures to it and send the link to that album to your sister?

Photobucket will auto back up your photos as that's what I have been doing. You need to get the photobucket app on your phone. I do have verizons cloud also but since I need the HTML codes for the photos it's easier for me to have photobuket back them up as then it's ready for me to post online with the HTML code.

In the app you can select if you want to manually back them up or auto back up over wifi only. I use the wifi setting so if I am connected to wifi as soon as I download from the web or email or take a photo photobuket saves it online. If I am not connected to wifi then the next time I am photobucket comes right on and back ups up the most recent photos, very handy feature and the app works great for uploading photos. I have much less trouble using the app than photobucket online. Mary

I went into the storage on my iPhone6 and have about 4.3 GB free. The things I have on are: Mail, Contacts, Calendars, Reminders, Passbook, Backup, Keychain, and Find My iPhone; I have a Flashlight app, but it is not listed, nor are any other apps. I am guessing with your phone that it may simply be saving some settings for your Flashlight app and is not taking up any significant space; and, in any case, if it's backing up the whole app, it isn't taking up much space: my Flashlight app is separate from the one that is built in to the iPhone 6 and it only takes up 26 MB. If you "turnoff and delete," I doubt it will delete the app from the phone, it will just delete the backup. I can't guarantee that, but that's my guess. You could simply do the "turnoff and delete," and re-install the app if it disappeared. Or you could call Apple to see what the deal is. By the way, how much of your 5 GB is now available?

The first 5GB is free. Once you fill it up you have to delete stuff to make room, or you need to pay for a larger storage capacity. Apple will not charge you for more storage unless you specifically choose to upgrade. iCloud holds your backups, your contacts, etc., but these are usually minor in size compared to your photos. Hmm. How does your bank know you're using just one PC - does it send a token/cookie that has to be kept? What happens when you clear the browser's cache or use a different browser, do you need to authenticate yourself again? That's nuts, a deal breaker for me. There are too many user-friendly banks to choose from, no need to stick with one that's not. Not long ago, I opened a new account (with a big name bank I would deal with online only) that had a good interest rate on basic savings and (over the phone) insisted that certain features of use I wanted were fully implemented. One month later, they implemented a two-step verification for each log-on (which was really annoying) and busted my ability to update with Quicken as I do otherwise with ALL my other accounts. I closed the account, moved my money elsewhere, and told them why. Did you check to see if an online PC session with Mint offers the capability to upload file input for non-linked financial accounts?

I have a Canon camera with Wifi too. I've never turned it on, it's a capability that's not of value to me. I find photos easy to unload by either using a USB cord (one of the standard sizes, any one works) or from the card, which I swap out anyway and access when removing the battery to charge. I've shared my view before, I think Win 10 is really not different at all from prior versions. It acts the same, it looks the same (since they changed the tile view, though that was always easy to avoid by using one of the simple add-ons like Classic Shell or Power 8). It's maybe a bit better in recovering resources and a bit more stable. Otherwise, very similar to its predecessors.
