iCloud storage

This is similar to a previously posted message but is a little more pointed to a single problem.

I keep getting messages that my iCloud storage is nearly out of space. Today's message is that I have used 4.8 GB of the 5 GB available.

My only 2 Apple products are an iPhone 6+ and an iPad (don't know version, but it is old!)

I have signed on to iCloud/com from my PC but there is little or nothing there. The only thing with content is "Contacts." I have 250 contacts, hardly enough to use 4.8 GB.

I have moved all photos from my iPhone to Photobucket (that was a chore! Somehow there were 2 and 3 copies of most photos) and deleted the photos from my iPhone.

How do I see what is causing me to use so much space on iCloud? How do I clean it out?

Have you looked through all the categories when you are in iCloud? Is it possible you have had music or movies on one or both devices that got automatically stored in iCloud? Is there a lot on your phone or your iPad that is getting automatically re-stored in iCloud after you delete it from iCloud? Is it possible you have two iCloud accounts since you have two Apple devices that have quite different ages?

If you still can't figure this out, I am sure a call to Apple Customer Service or an appointment at an Apple Store will help resolve it.

kudzu, thanks for responding. My own personal tech guy, a/k/a DSIL, finally figured it out. Or at least figured out how to stop it. Most of the storage used was from my old iPhone, probably from when AT&T transferred stuff from old phone to new phone. We've deleted that and freed up TONS of space.

All along, I thought it was photos creating the problem. It wasn't.

I knew it wasn't music or movies since I have never downloaded either to the phone. I'm so tech-not-savvy, that I use my phone as a phone, a camera, and for a little online surfing.

I will guess that the first step of the iCloud backup is to calculate how much data you need to back up and when it saw that there was not enough space it reported the error without backing up any of the photos. I don't have an iPhone, but can you connect it to your Windows computer? If so, you should be able to copy the photos from the phone to your computer. When I plug my Android phone into my computer, I open 'Computer' and can see the phone as a storage device. From there, I can copy the photos to Windows (my pictures folder) or delete the ones that I don't want. In your case, you could copy them to the external hard drive that you mentioned. If you already have a Photobucket account, can't you create an album of your Niece's birthday party, upload those pictures to it and send the link to that album to your sister? luis, here are a couple of options to think about: - At least for now, T-Mobile offers for tablets a data-only SIM and 200 MB of data free every month. That's not much data at all, but you could purchase more if you wanted to. The big caveat is if T-Mobile has adequate service at the assisted-living facility. Their network is getting better all the time, but coverage can be an issue outside of large metropolitan areas. - AT&T offers data-only pay-as-you-go plans. My wife uses a plan on her tablet that is something like $25 for 1 GB (or maybe 2 GB; the iPad isn't here at the moment). Use it all in a day? Buy another one. Otherwise you can refill up to 90 days after. - The T-Mobile option requires an unlocked tablet. So do some others. Nowadays, though, there's just no reason to buy a tablet locked to any carrier. - There are features on the tablet (whichever one you buy) which you can switch off to preserve data. Your mother probably will not need a Maps application polling periodically for updates. My wife and I each have smartphones and we've shut off "remote data" for hungry apps. For instance, we don't allow app-store purchases with cellular data; we wait till we're home on Wi-Fi for that. Both of us get by on less than 500 MB of cellular data per month. And that amount of data plus way more than enough talk and text for us costs us (together) $40 on Consumer Cellular. My wife's iPad is separate, but that's not much money per month for the times she wants to find something and she's not near Wi-Fi. Granted, that may not be an option for your mother, unless you visit once in a while and take her someplace with Wi-Fi. :-) But it is possible, with limitations. And some money.

I know nothing about Android phones as I the first smartphone I ever got was an Apple. I got the iohone4 when it first came out and had it until it died. I have the 6 now and have had it maybe two years. I decided to make the switch to an iPhone b/c at the time I had an iPad and had just replaced my Dell with a Mac, so figured I’d just make the leap to iPhone so that everything was compatible. At first I rarely used my phone except to call and text, but now that all my kids are teens, I use my phone all the time (please note, I do not talk or text when I’m with other people!). My kids have to have iPads for school, so this also made it easier as we all share an itunes account etc. Since I have no idea how an android phone compares with an iPhone, I can’t really offer advice there. however, if you are still considering an iPhone, and given your limited phone use, I would recommend looking at the SE. It is the same size as the 5 so not big. It is reasonably priced for an iPhone. When getting my youngest her first phone, that is what we selected for her as she does not *need* one of the more expensive options (tho she sometimes complains about her friends who have the latest and greatest which is ridiculous at her age). While the purpose for getting her the phone was so that we could reach her (no longer in school with her older siblings and for logistical reasons, I needed to be able to communicate with her), It still has other features that are useful. For example, she finished her book while we were at the beach so was able to download one from our library to read until we got home. I’m rambling here, but my point is, if you don’t need or want an expensive latest model iPhone, look at the SE if you are still considering Apple.

Woodrose, iCloud was already installed when I bought my iPad. Never did I bother to find out what it is until yesterday. I still don't know why it was almost full, but I do know you'd need a password to do whatever. thin access it so I could sync and do whatever else it offers, I'd need a password. I share an iPhone with DH but the only time I use it is to call our telephone company & tell them our landline is out. It happened three times this summer because they were laying laying fiber optic cable here in the country and they kept cutting phone lines & water lines. I hate using an iphone. If I drove everyday I'd keep one on me but I have no desire to do anything on it. I play on the iPad, and surf the net and type on the computer, which I'm on now. BTW, the cable guy said fiber optics will be ready in December. They have 5 hours and 20 minutes left. 😎 I also have no idea how to stream either once we get it. :)

k, that reminds me. I meant to include how I found the things that needed deleting. Settings>iCloud>Storage>Manage Storage. At that point, you will find the devices that are being backed up. Click on the device. The next screen will show the BackUp Options.

This is also the point where I'm not sure why certain things are being backed up, such as the flashlight app. If you want to turn off the backup. your only choice is "turnoff & delete". I don't want to delete my flashlight, but I don't think it needs to be backed up either. Opinions?

I went into the storage on my iPhone6 and have about 4.3 GB free. The things I have on are: Mail, Contacts, Calendars, Reminders, Passbook, Backup, Keychain, and Find My iPhone; I have a Flashlight app, but it is not listed, nor are any other apps. I am guessing with your phone that it may simply be saving some settings for your Flashlight app and is not taking up any significant space; and, in any case, if it's backing up the whole app, it isn't taking up much space: my Flashlight app is separate from the one that is built in to the iPhone 6 and it only takes up 26 MB. If you "turnoff and delete," I doubt it will delete the app from the phone, it will just delete the backup. I can't guarantee that, but that's my guess. You could simply do the "turnoff and delete," and re-install the app if it disappeared. Or you could call Apple to see what the deal is. By the way, how much of your 5 GB is now available?

I now have 4.6 GB available. The storage hog was my old iPhone. As soon as I deleted it, the problem vanished.

I just looked on my iPad. "BackUp" is not on on the iPad. I have just turned it on. It'll be interesting to see how much storage it eats.
