DIY budget elegant bathroom, almost done: pics...
Comments (95)I'm very sorry I did not answer the questions from the last few years... I've been out of reno mode for a while :) It's probably too late, but here are the replies: @walkin_yesindeed - the vanity finish has held up just fine. However, it's not the original paint. We sanded and re-painted with new Ben Moore bathroom paint. No issues with dampness (we do run the fan for every shower, though.) @kirkhall - I have NOT been happy with the touted un-stainable-ness of the epoxy grout on the floor. I mean, it's better than regular grout, but it didn't stay white no matter how much I cleaned it. It looks fine, since the tile is multi-toned, but it's definitely not still white. The shower grout, however, has held up extremely well. @SparklingWater - I don't recall the demo being terribly difficult, but that may be because I knew what to expect from other parts of the house. It was tile over a dense cement. @MrsD - I think the grout color is standard white. @MayaEoff - Our tub is the standard 30" size....See MoreGrohe or hansgrohe, which is better?
Comments (37)motherof3inct (I am a motherof3inca :-) , but also an Interior Designer. I've specified many Kohler products for clients/projects and never had anyone complain about water pressure coming from the shower-heads. Well, unless you are a Californian and we have VERY strict codes regarding gpm (gallons per minute) or flow rate, but we are past complaining and just used to it! Maybe shangaimom ended up with a CA approved fixture by mistake? This easy to do inadvertently when buying plumbing fixtures online, as opposed to purchasing at a local supplier. Also, whether or not showerheads have the option to change type of flow is really more of a model thing, not a Kohler across-the-board thing - many of the kohler shower-heads do allow you to change type of flow. Anyway - just didn't want you to be scared of KOHLER as a brnad. They make beautiful products in a range of qualities levels and options. I've really like their products - sounds like the Memoirs was just too basic for the case mentioned above....See MoreHow much more work ($$$) is it to install a Thermostatic vs PB?
Comments (5)A couple things to consider. If your getting cold surges, then your PB valve is not working. Not surprising for a 25 year old valve. Cold or hot surges are what pressure balanced valves were designed to prevent. They compensate for changes in the pressure coming from the hot or cold supply. None do it perfectly but most are adequate. Thermostatic valves will maintain a set temperature when either the pressure or the temperature from either supply line changes. This will help if your water heater is a little undersize. They will also compensate for changes in pressure but may not be as fast as a PB valve. Since they use a temperature "sensor" of some type, there may be a lag in the compensating. I don't know how long a lag this might be I don't have any experience with thermostatic valves. It likely will vary between different brands. The antiscald feature on PB valves is also an anti get hot water quick feature. It restricts how much the hot side will flow. If your a long way from the water heater this can waste a lot of time and water. The Thermostatic valves should not have this problem, but some may. depending on how they are constructed. A tub filler spout is unrestricted and will allow you to fill a tub quickly, but also allows you to run a lot of water from the hot supply and get hot water to your shower quickly,(assuming you haven't restricted it with an anti scald feature) . If you install a second shower head where the tub spout is supossed to go, you will restrict the flow (even if you remove the showerhead flow restrictor) and it will take longer to get hot water. I have seen tub spouts mounted low in a shower. Generaly refered to as a "toe tester". I considered both types and decided on a PB valve with the Anti scald "feature" disabled....See MorePlease critique this plan - Small guest bath reno
Comments (4)Thank you for the input! The floor is porcelain and definitely rated for floors. We did decide to keep the niche simple and cut down the tile and plan to use bullnose around the perimeter. Hopefully the bullnose will look good! I didn't realize about them not matching, but it makes sense since the field tile and bullnose are likely from different production runs, so we may have to alter that plan. The tile is being done by a pro, so hopefully there will be minimal lippage. He said he should be able to get 1/16" grout lines. The drywall is in, we are currently painting, choosing grout colors I'm nervous about the TEC grout. I've read a lot of comments where it doesn't setup completely and runs, but since a pro is doing that I assume he's got it under control. I will post pics when it's done!...See MoreErrant_gw
