Worming is alive and well on Facebook

I joined a worm composting page on Facebook, and now I'm getting inundated with posts. I counted almost 50 in a two hour period, not counting my own 10 or so in the same time frame. I may have to unjoin just so I can get some work done.

I joined about a month back. Over 8300 members, and it is fast moving. There seem to be lots of knowledgeable, respectful folks at the site willing to share.
I like the pace of GardenWeb better.

I will skip it, I get enough alerts just from the red fountain club. I wonder if you can turn the alerts off. GardenWeb is enough for me.

' daphne odora'. Are they hard to keep alive as many say?

I have 3 Daphne odora 'marginata' planted by the front of my ent.way. I live in a rural wooded setting but the scrubs get much broken sunlight much of the day. They have been there now 4 yrs. I'm on a gentle slope 2-3% so they have good drainage, n the substrate is mainly white sand, though I added peat to it when I planted them, around the roots n the large hole I had dug (mixed the peat with the nat. sand). The scrubs have done well, since, and have grown more horizontally than vertically. Almost like an elevated ground cover. During all of March the fragrance is overwhelming, to say the least!! The scrubs were a fairly good size when I bought them, but now 2 of them are 4' X 3' n one is 3' X 3'. Perhaps 15" high. Two winters ago I did has some leaf n much unopened flower cluster damage from sub-zero winter cold (-4 F, very unusual, btw here in Cent. inner coastal plain Va.) but the scrubs proper, recovered since. This past winters heavy snows, actually protected them from the cold, but we were only in the lower single digits which is typical here in rural Va. Brief, if you have them in an exposed cond. where winter cold can effect them, give them protection, especially in zone 6 or lower. I believe the only other plants I have that are as fragrant are some of my Mock Orange scrubs (e.g. Belle Etoile, P. Lewisii cv unknown at this time, Magnolia virginiana, the flowers smell like a bar of soap, very fresh!! (native to my place!!). Good drainage, n soil make up, location, are all important to many scrubs for their happiness.....n one more thing, is, if they are happy where they are, LEAVE THEM ALONE! Don't move them!! Without seeing a picture, by your description I'd say that the white rice things are springtails which are all part of the microherd that help to break down any food that's introduced. I always find afew of them in the catch trays. On the other hand, if you're adding too much food, then you're bin is too wet and what you might be seeing is white mites which are an indication that things are too wet in your bin. Adding some dry shredded newspaper and holding off on feeding will dry things out and get rid of the mites. There's no need to add hydrated lime to your bins. I add dry crushed eggshells which can be pulverized with a rolling pin or a coffee grinder. A tablespoon everycouple of weeks or so is all you need, but it's not absolutely neccessary. After 2 years of vermicomposting I've never had any major problems. Hope this helps. Good luck. mataka4

Melissia: Not knowing your type of bin (plastic, wood, ?), I'm gonna generalize about your question of excess water. If your worms' home has holes in the bottom for drainage, there should be only small amounts of liquid underneath it just where the holes are. pic If it is plastic, it'll retain moisture a long time. The lid, if it has one, will have condensation on the underside....but just a little (it shouldn't be dripping off it). These parameters are mostly described as ideal mainly for the convenience of the human being messing with the bins. The worms'll do just fine when the liquid situation is way too yucky for you. I'll admit, however, that when I'm about to sort thru bins and stuff, I first take off the tops and dry them out with fans. Just less messy. Sometimes we let these topics teeter dangerously close to falling off the edge around here but usually we get back on our feed. There is probably a setting you can change. That way you will not get notices but will see them in your feed. Whatever that is. There may be a setting where they will not show up in your feed. Then you can just click on the group and read what you want at your convince. I think I am in that worm group. Way less posts there than the vegetable fermenting group. I agree the posts at the worm group are good. Similar to ours. I only read and do not answer there. They do not seem to need more replies. And the answers seem similar or exactly what we would post as a group.

Never cared for facebook, I know a lot of folks do like it but a forum atmosphere is more to my liking than one gigantic scrolling wall. This forum has its issues as far as functions I like to see in a board but at least it does have the archive of years of posts, searchable and somewhat grouped by thread title.

Good to know there are lots of worm lovin folks out there though.

Nexev: The worm group on Facebook is truly beautiful to behold. But as you say in way less than seven hours and more like seven minutes one's post has passed into oblivion with as you say no search possibilities soup for us. As the seconds change and new people post it is almost as if facts reported can be massaged this way or that way. The facts you mention are I guess why I post here not there on this particular topic. Other topics I post there. But they move too fast. The sense of foundation facts and history are weaker. Not that here is strong.
