I'm with brandon7; yes, conceivably, they *could* be moved, but a 6" caliper/15 footer is way bigger than I'd be inclined to attempt, nor would I be inclined to spend the $$ it'd take to hire someone with a large tree spade to move 'em, unless they were a valuable, one-of-a-kind specimen. Late winter transplanting appears to work best for oaks - you'll probably need to do it in Jan/Feb, depending on where in AL you're located. My rule of thumb is: it'll take a minimum of 1 year per inch of trunk diameter for most bareroot transplants to re-establish root systems and re-commence growth; IF you moved these with a tree spade, you might get re-establishment sooner, as you wouldn't lose ALL the 'feeder' roots, but there'd be a significant setback, if the trees didn't just die outright. I'm an oak enthusiast, but if they were at my place, in the location you've described, I'd just cut them down and be done with it. Depending upon your preferences, you could hire/rent a stump grinder to grind the stumps out, or just treat the exposed cambium layer of the stump with undiluted Brush-B-Gon or Pathway(Tordon) herbicide and allow them to rot away naturally.

Hi Greg..I have moved plenty of trees in the hot weather in Brisbane and Townsville but never any Palms, and the only ones that did not survive were the Callistemons ( Bottle brushes). Just a couple of questions did you plant the palms in the soil that had been sprayed with roundup as I think there is a few weeks waiting period. When you dug the holes were they a bit bigger than the root ball and did you soak the hole and let the water seep away. And if not did you water around the inside edge of the hole. Did you plant the palm at the same level as it was growing before. Did you cut of 1/3 to 1/2 of the fonds if you answer yes to those you should not have any trouble. I would keep the water up but I dont know about 5 buckets a day it will get waterlogged. And I would not fertiise every week either even with seasol, I never fertlise till I see signs of new growth even on a healthy plant I do realise you are doing the seasol bit to aid in its transplant with the roots but it is better to under fertlise than over fertilise. Not a good time of the year to transplant anything. Always think Spring when transplanting. Day's are longer and warmer which spur growth. Plants have a better chance of recovering. I can't tell how big your plant is. Cut some of the branches off and leave some leaves. Keep it warm and in a bright window and hope for the best. Spring is just around the corner. If it was healthy before this, it should come back. Jane

Hi there Al, I'm so sorry to here about your weather, you've been hit hard this time around. Thank you for your input. Yes these are 2 different trees, the 1st one is showing some new growth, but only on 7-8 branch tips, I'm not giving up though, I took 4 cuttings before it went down hill, they're doing great. I had big plans for that one, which is why I asked you about nebari in the first place, then suddenly dropped the subject. The 2nd one does need some pruning, but not as much as you would think. I'm going to take it back quite a way though, before I start on the roots. My Enonymus is the one I have to keep an eye on. I was hoping to try my first air layer on one of them. Sounds like you know numerous techniques on the subject. Btw, you guys ever find tiny snails on a tree? Thanks again Rob
