Not thrilled with the winter weather
Comments (31)I looked up the weather in Topeka KS (I lived there when very young) and you folks have nothing to worry about yet if accuweather has it anywhere close to right. First of all, until the chill requirements are met dormancy is pretty much stable and susceptibility to weather induced budding is gradual . Secondly, I don't see a pattern of sustained warmth nearly adequate to set off early budding based on my experience here. The last time we had first growth in March here it was set up by an entire week of temps in the '70's during the day and low '60's or high '50s at night- basically warm spring weather. It created the earliest spring in memory, but somehow we avoided lethal frosts. A few years later with a warm spell a bit later we weren't so lucky. Short bursts of warm weather are a normal condition in our winters here- often enough to create a full thaw, but in 25 years watching we've never had spring in Jan or Feb. I believe that solid weeks of very warm temps in that period must have occurred several times. In March you can begin the high anxiety mind set of a hen mother. There will be plenty of time for that. Extreme cold is all you generally need to worry about in mid-winter in your zone, I think....See MoreU.S.A winter 2014-2015 weather forecast
Comments (32)Hermitian, who the hell asked you? You're not looking for more company are you? Hermitian is indeed looking for company, but we are the wrong gender! I have seen photos of his place and I think he needs our help though. It's much too nice for one guy. We would need a few weeks for assessment of the place, before we could even give any advice. Hermitian appears to be somewhat of a good cook too, so as long as he feeds us, we will do it out of the goodness of our hearts. Then the postal abbreviation can be changed to MZ, better than MO, which of course is a phonetic reference to one of The Three Stooges. OK, now I will never forget MO as the correct abbreviation. My brother in law is from MO, and well if the shoe fits! A few years ago I saw that arch. It is impressive and the building of it is funny. When they got to the top, it didn't line up! Ha! They figured a way. First thing they did is fire Larry and Curly! They hired some guy named Shemp. Later they added another Curly Joe....See MoreNEW: Winter Sowing Swap 2014-2015
Comments (148)Dem-Pa, I love your pics. I can't wait to see flowers again. Some of my camellias are blooming, so it isn't like I don't have color in the yard, I am just too ready for spring. I know it will arrive here sooner than a lot of other places, I am just not a winter person. After about a month I am ready for spring again. I started about 40 different varieties in ziplock baggies yesterday. Now the waiting begins. I have checked the two wintersow jugs I have already started, but there is no sign of life yet. I have been collecting jugs and bottles of all shapes and sizes. I have a question though, when you cut windows in the jugs, do you let them sit open all winter? I haven't ever done that and wonder with my temperatures fluxuating ( sp) as much as they do if the windows would help. It will be 52 here tonight, but 30 tomorrow night.......See MoreHow Is The Weather ..(4)- 2015??
Comments (392)Another Record-Breaker! Warmest Christmas Day Ever for New York City > Christmas Day saw record-breaking temperatures for the tri-state area, as the mercury crept to a balmy 66 degrees shortly after midnight Friday, eclipsing the 33-year-old record by two degrees. > Revelers flocked to the Rockefeller Center tree as the sun rose Friday, donning nothing more than light jackets, if any. It was the second day of record-breaking temperatures; the mercury hit 72 on Christmas Eve, shattering the previous record of 63 degrees set in 1996.
