free fixer-upper orange trees SF CA

Family in the East Bay (of San Francisco Bay Area, California), has two older orange trees in pots to give away. One is in a 1/2 wine barrel, and is at least 6 feet tall and heavy, so you'd need a truck. The other is in a pot that I'll want to keep so bring a big bag. Okay, the important issues: what are they? I think they are both blood oranges, but one might be some sort of marmalade orange--small and sweet smelling but not for fresh eating. I could wait till next season to figure out, but we need the space now. They will both be significantly root bound, and were very badly pruned by lawn-care people. So these aren't prizes, but I'm reluctant to throw them out for sentimental reasons. I don't live in town, so we'd have to schedule a week in advance. Any takers?

I am very interested but I live 2000+ miles away. If you could post pictures of them that might help you find a home. Any citrus tree of fruiting size is a catch. Best place to find a home is Craigslist or local. I have tried here with 0.00000% success. I found homes for 2 rescued bold cypress trees that were in the ground and they had to dig them up.

Thanks for the tip Steve! I'll take pics of the trees next time I'm up there. Hey, that's a nice little tree in your photo. Maybe it's a good thing you got no takers!

Hi everyone, I am new to this forum, but on my third year of plumerias. We went to the show last year and this year. Since we are kinda new, we aren't to picky about which one/type yet so we went on Sunday at 2:00, so there was only two hours left of the show. Let me tell you last year there was plenty to pick from, this year, there was almost nothing left! JJ was the only one who had quite a few left. So that being said a couple vendors were offering to make a deal with the couple that they had left. My husband and I each went with $50.00 to spend, of course we brought the checkbook just in case!! Right away my husband struck a pretty good deal with two of the larger plants that were outside on the patio. The seller marked them both down right away for a total of 45.00 for both, one white and yellow, one yellow and white, both with current inflows and both having an inflow about to open! So then it's my turn, we have plenty that are one to two years old, I kinda wanted one larger one and no more white and yellow. I already have three JJ's... but they do seem to be my strongest plants so why not another one, again a lot of small ones, a couple larger ones for $100, but that over my budget.. so I was going to settle for one for $40.00, I don't even remember what is was, and John saw me and said, no don't get that one, take this one, it was a Rio, with an inflow about to bloom, it was marked $55.00, but he marked it down to $40.00. Still white, but has colored edges, he showed me in the catalog. So I was happy. Then I came across the Aztec Gold, I loved the smell, but they only had a little one left, but the vendor automatically took $5.00 off for me. So for going at the last minute we are very happy with our afternoon at the sale. We left at exactly 100 with a good group of plants. The two on the left are the ones my husband got for a total of 45.00, the one in the back is a JJ Divine for my mother in law, she loves mine, the little one in the front is the Aztec Gold, and the one on the right is the JJ Rio!

KD, now that I think about it, he was actually in Berkeley in the 60's. (shudder) Do you feel younger now? ;-) Fly, I have already done my never-gonna-move-there move to New England! Can I be done now? I do think I could love gardening in CA, but I am enjoying taking winters off, something I never got to do in FL. Regarding school out there, I just don't feel like we could swing it financially -- the trips out to visit and the flights home for breaks. She has always said she wanted to be close enough that we could drive in (or over or down) to take her out for dinner. As much as she loves school, she needs to come home to recharge and I can see that remaining the case. I guess our years living hip-to-hip on the boat have left us appreciating physical proximity. I kept my hands in my pockets at Heath. I did buy the smallest bud vase to tuck into my carry-on. But, the tax is high and they claim to have reasonable shipping rates, so I figured I should not impulse buy. I am consolidating two houses and have always had a dish habit. My cupboards runneth over already! As you know, my heart belongs to Oceanside Glasstile, so I didn't spend much time in the overruns room. I did get to see those ovals tiles I believe Mahlgold was flirting with. And the white ones with the innie-outie thing going on. So yummy. I also saw the yellow/orange/blue range that Allison linked in the back, not yet available for sale. You know, those are my colors! Trite or not, I may need to order some... Allison, I missed the rug store. We got caught in a monster traffic jam heading up from Carmel to Berkeley. (another reason I luuuv where I live) It was getting dark and we needed to see the campus and have a walk around. Is that Jane T? I am glad your DD found her place. My kiddo had been talking about New England like that ever since we landed in Florida when she was 8. I used to tell her she'd be sorry up there in the cold northern winters and she'd miss Florida. I'd never have guessed we'd all end up here year-round. She was enchanted by the surroundings and the people in CA but still feels her heart belongs to New England. Parma, I don't know what it is about me and travel. I do seem to succumb to something or another on at least half of my trips. In light of these last two, I am starting to rethink my style. Honestly, since you got back from PV, I have been peeking at the net and pondering. The thought of going and staying in one place instead of all this schlepping is intriguing. We'll have to talk...

Can somebody hand me a towel? I'm drooling puddles on the tabletop here. This house is a-freakin-mazing. Unpainted original woodwork? Original light fixtures in storage? Intact built-ins? Be still my beating heart! Where I live, in its current condition that sucker would be priced at a quarter mil. Fully restored? Half a mil easy and probably three-quarters if in a desirable location. Without being able to see more of the exterior structure I'm not sure I could label it as a certain subtype of bungalow (and it's quite big for a bungalow, too) but I wouldn't tag it as a Tudor by a longshot... there are so many different influences that my instinct is simply to call it "Arts & Crafts" and leave it at that. (I'd have no problems with a haunted house, either. I get on well with ghosts - have had one before - and hang about with a passel of psychics and clergy of various flavors anyway.) That bathroom with the green plaid wallpaper above the tile is just begginging for a Bradbury, Trustworth, or Carole Mead frieze. Mmmm... (Did you know that Vandykes.com has vintage-style medicine cabinet kits that will coordinate nicely with that style of woodwork?) Re: the servants' bathroom, is that painted tile or scored plaster? If you decide to pull out that mini tub, either keep it with the house (goodness knows you have enough basement space to store it) or sell it, don't just pitch it - those are VERY hard to find! I'm guessing that's a 4-footer or perhaps even a 3 1/2 foot? A new 48" cast iron clawfoot runs about $1300 plus freight. 42" ones are almost impossible to find. The three sinks in the basement are very interesting, considering that a family of that economic stature would have been able to afford a gas or electric washing machine (and would have been mighty proud of it too!). I wonder if someone had a hobby that required multiple sinks - is there evidence that the spot it's in was ever used as a darkroom, perhaps? It looks like probably only the center set of taps is original. If I were physically able, I would grab a house like this in a split second. It is absolutely one of the loveliest houses I have seen for a long time, the "bones" are impressive and comparatively little has been done to screw it up! (There is little as pathetic as a thwarted old-house nut, except maybe a dogless dog person.) As for the mortgage, what about a FHA 203(k) rehabilitation loan?

kcandmilo - congratulations on the nice start to the spring flush! It appears that your young trees finally got some "traction" as I call it. I had a similar experience in that my young trees appeared dormant and did not attain traction until after I increased the fertilizer dosage (using AS) - and irrigation. Let me throw out a word of advice... save your money on the fancy specialty fertilizers by delaying their application until the trees start bearing some fruit. Most of their needs right now are N (from the AS) and water. When the fruit appears, and in years after bearing a heavy crop, the ratios mentioned in multiple posts above rise in priority and amounts. BTW: I just threw down more AS yesterday in anticipation that it be watered in by last night's rain. the 1/4" of rain was perfect! And, the coming warm days forecast (65-70F+) will increase the root uptake of nutrients... and subsequently goose the flush. However, I am nervous about the string of frosty mornings this week damaging the new growth... 31F yesterday, 34F today... 32F during the week in my areas. Its warmer in Palo Alto so you should be in great shape : - ) I will post a clarification to my earlier post of feeding with AS weakly weekly in your other thread... It is a sweetlee tangerine tree from seed. I have been told that it is an orange tree of early ripening. of around October to start. I also have a poncirus trifoliata that I don't know what to do with. I would like to trade it for an equal amount of potting soil. The container, dirt and tree/trees can go. I won't have access to the Sweetlee tangerine tree you are referring to because it is in the greenhouse and the only access is from a window 6 feet up and down a step ladder.

Poncirus trifoliata 8-25-13 pictured date. The tree is 2 summers growth old when pictured and now fuller with a 3rd summers growth but I don't have any pictures. It is now bare.

This is a current picture of sweetlee after a winter outside in a greenhouse with many temperature drops down to as low as 32F

Well, if next summer you still want to trade it away (the Lee tangerine, I mean) I might be able to do it. I come down to the Cincinnati area 2-3 times each year.

I am still interested in trading the sweetlee tangerine tree. I would like to share the facts and myths of the tree so you know what you are getting.

1) The container is a 28 gallon half barrel.

2) The soil mix is 2/3 Miracle grow potting mix 1/3 backyard topsoil.---Very heavy

3) I got the seeds from a "sweetlee" tangerine. All the seeds were mono-embryonic.

4) Many knowledgeable think this fruit was an orange or Lee tangerine marketed as "sweet".

5) The tree does most of it's growing in fall, winter , and spring. They grow like weeds.

6) Does well in lower light than other citrus. All blood orange and Meyers died (low light)

I am very happy with my 2 in ground sweetlee trees. The strongest tree put on about 40 feet of total new twig growth starting in January up to now.

The container tree weighs around 100-200 pounds and it will take several people to move this tree to the street.

I have approximately $40 in the container with the soil mix. Because the soil is so heavy you may want to bare root it and put in your own mix and a smaller container. You can have the tree for free. I have a very hard time letting go of my containers and soil mixes but you can have the tree for free. If you could trade the equivalent in potting soil that would be fine with me. My wife and I are retired and have to watch our resources carefully
